Chiropterans
Chiroptera are a new species, named after the biological classification of bats. They appear in small numbers amongst humans, and although they feed on human blood, their existence goes mostly unnoticed by humanity. All levels of sentience, including what is known as a 'Chevalier' or a 'Queen', are labelled as Chiropteran in species, though they are considerably less common than the general Chiropteran.
The most common form of Chiropterans is a huge, thoughtless creature that is unable to process even the most basic thought. They drool, they growl, and they will consistently eat any human that is nearby. Incredibly hard to kill, the only way to effectively destroy these creatures is to incinerate its entire body, or decapitate it. These are not easy tasks. Because of their great strength, and the attempts to cover up their existence to the general public, they are a formidable threat. Typically created from a human body--caused by a genetic mutation that overtakes all human biology and effectively gives birth to a new being--one of the only ways to kill them is by use of pure Chiropteran blood. The catalyst for this transformation is (as researchers eventually discover) a fifth nucleotide, something thought to be impossible, as it is generally thought there are only four. This is effectively the reason why humans turn into Chiroptera, because when the nucleotide is provoked and begins to mutate, it becomes undetectable. Normally, this process is set-off by the introduction of pure Chiropteran blood, which is why the re-introduction of pure blood into the Chiropteran bloodstream can effectively crystallize its body and kill it.
Chevalier (meaning 'knight' in French) is the next level of Chiropteran, and they are also created from humans. However, rather than an injection or another mode of blood contact, these humans take in pure blood from the source. Yes, somehow this makes a difference. They are much, much stronger than the average Chiropteran, sometimes having special abilities, and are easily more intelligent as they retain all of their humanity, along with their human bodies--essentially immortal, as they never age. Requiring neither sleep nor food, they are able to switch back and forth between a human form and Chiropteran form, which varies in appearance depending on the Chevalier.
In the spirit of true vampire lore, Chevaliers are basically 'sired' from a pureblood Chiropteran--instincts become more animalistic, and they feel the urge to protect the pureblood who created them at all cost. As one puts it, they view their respective creators as a 'mother' and a 'lover'.
Finally, there are the pureblood Chiropterans, otherwise known as 'Queens'. They are always female, and there seem to be only two in every generation, as mothers will always give birth to twin females. Strangely, their blood is antagonistic, meaning that their blood is effectively poisonous to the other. This poses a risk to all Chevaliers as well, since if the opposing sister mixes blood with them, they will die. This dualistic policy extends to breeding: a female can only be impregnated by the opposing sister's Chevaliers, making the need for male Chevaliers a biological necessity. Unlike Chevaliers, purebloods do require nutrients to live--human blood--although once they become fertile they also cease to age. In terms of power, they are on a far higher plateau in comparison to all other kinds of Chiropterans. The only deficiency with their bodies is that they require long periods of sleep; after being awake for only two to three years, they are forced to hibernate in cocoons for two to three decades. Chevaliers are held responsible for ensuring their safety during these times.
Chevaliers can also be artificially created with pure blood--the Schiff and later the Corpse Corps--though the prototypes were subject to short lifespans (self-imposed crystallization) and extreme sensitivity to light. The Corpse Corps were better made, but lacked all humanity.
World
A spin-off of Blood: The Last Vampire. Just imagine modern-day Earth, with a timeline spanning from the 19th century to the 21st century.
In 1833, a mummified corpse of what appears to be neither human nor Chiroptera is brought to the "Zoo", an estate owned by Joel Goldschmidt, near Bordeaux, France. The Zoo was more or less a research laboratory, where all manner of rare species of plant and animal were brought for Joel and his assistant Amshel Goldsmith--the Goldsmiths being a branch family to the Goldschmidts--to study. Upon dissecting the mummy, then named SAYA, Joel and Amshel uncovered two cocoons in SAYA's womb. No tool could get the cocoons to open, and it wasn't until one of the men accidentally cut his finger and let blood drip onto them did a reaction occur. They began to glow, and after a few months, both cocoons hatched, revealing two perfectly human-like babies.
In the name of science, the first was named Saya and was raised as Joel's adopted daughter. In contrast, the second baby remained nameless and was locked at the top of a tower on the edge of the estate, a guinea pig tended to by Amshel and kept alive with only minimal sustenance. This second child was Diva, though she wouldn't be given that name until many years later. These were the first and only two pureblood 'Queens' in existence, the most powerful creatures alive.
Blood+ is a series revolving around Saya's (humanized and essentially fighting for human supremacy) struggle against her twin sister Diva over the destruction of the Chiropteran race. Since their sleep cycles don't often parallel each other's, the conflict stretches throughout the centuries as Chevaliers will typically go into hiding with their respective Queen until she awakens again.
Culture
There is a secret branch of the government dedicated to exterminating Chiropterans, known as the Red Shield. This organization is run by the descendants of Joel Goldschmidt and all members dedicate their lives to the cause, which includes supporting Saya in her attempts to track down and kill Diva and her Chevaliers.
Diva, too, has her own business conglomerate created in her name, in interests of protecting her and creating more Chiropterans to ensure their place in the world. Amshel Goldsmith, the man who once helped discover the secrets of the twin girls, becomes Diva's Chevalier and names his group Cinq Flèches. It is originally a pharmaceutical company, but ends up diversifying into other economic sections, including the food industry and the military with the intent to have humans ingest "Delta67", a derivative of pure blood, by introducing it in wine, food, and military experimentation.
