Backstory (spoilers up through Reload 7)
Hakkai was born Cho Gonou in a small town in Togenkyo (the Saiyuki world's equivalent to China). He and his twin sister Kanan were split up and sent to different orphanages after their parents were killed when they were young. Gonou spent the following years at a Catholic orphanage, hating everything and everyone, including the God he was increasingly certain didn't exist. He tended to frighten the other children, either intentionally or just by being himself. He usually chose to stay inside and read books from the library rather than play with the other children who were, to him, frivolous and unaware of the actual pain of the world. The nun who ran the orphanage was often quite concerned that Gonou wasn't interacting with others the way a young boy should.

At twelve, he was accepted into a boarding school and left the orphanage for good, firmly convinced that "if God exists, he is a fool." He was as antisocial as he had been at the orphanage. He continued on at the school in much the same way until, at the age of seventeen he met Kanan again. They fell in love, and even after discovering that they were siblings, they continued as lovers, getting married a year later. They moved into a small village, got a house together as a newlywed couple, though their matching appearances were cause for some talk, and Gonou got a job as a schoolteacher at the local school.

This arrangement worked well until the following year when the villagers turned Kanan over to Hyakugan Maoh's men to take back to their youkai king, who had a taste for young human women. When Gonou discovered Kanan gone, he questioned the villagers, who said it had
either been Kanan or one of their daughters and he should understand. Instead, he went on a killing spree in the village, killing half the villagers, around five hundred men, women, and children with a kitchen knife. He then left the village, tracking down Kanan's abductors. It took him two months, but he eventually found Hyakugan Maoh's castle and killed every youkai he could find. He killed 999 men, women, and children before finding Kanan locked in a dungeon cell. In his happiness, he didn't notice her slipping his knife out of his belt until it was too late. She had been raped and impregnated by the youkai and couldn't live with that, so she committed suicide in front of him. He was then found by the son of Hyakugan Maoh, Chin Yisou, who disemboweled him with a sword before deciding to try out the myth that a man who bathed in the blood of a thousand youkai would become one himself. He slit his wrist over Gonou, who began to change into a youkai. They fought, Gonou killed Chin Yisou (he thought) and then fled into the night, acquiring a set of limiters at some point which allowed him to remain human in appearance at least.

Enter Sha Gojyo, who found Gonou near death and took him back to his house, patched him up, and nursed him back to health. After about a month's convalescence, Gonou told Gojyo his story and was just about to reveal his name when Genjyo Sanzo and Son Goku showed up, looking for the murderer Cho Gonou. Gojyo protected him, allowing Gonou to escape into the forest. He ran into a member of the youkai clan he had committed genocide on, who showed him the eyes of one of the youkai, which Gonou had pulled out prior to killing him. Gonou offered 'an eye for an eye' and pulled out his own right eye. He started on the left, but Goku stopped him. Bleeding and weak, he continued on with the help of Sanzo, Goku, and Gojyo to find that the castle where Kanan had died had burned to the ground. He was then taken into custody by Sanzo to stand trial before the Buddhist gods, the Sanbutsushin. Some time later, Gonou returned unexpectedly to Gojyo, telling him his name was now Cho Hakkai.

Hakkai stayed with Gojyo for three years, helping Sanzo with errands for the Buddhist temple, tutoring Goku, and generally taking care of Gojyo, until Sanzo was ordered by the gods to go to the West to stop the resurrection of a youkai called Gyumaoh and to take Goku, Gojyo, and Hakkai with him. They set off on a journey West with Hakuryu, Hakkai's small, white dragon who provided transportation by transforming into a jeep, and running into many side tracks and adventures along the way, including the reappearance of Chin Yisou. He had turned himself into a shikigami, a sort of living doll, right before he died. He used his knowledge to torment Hakkai until Hakkai eventually killed him again.

Now over a year into the journey, they were still on the road. Little did they know that things were only going to get more interesting. Goku was attacked by a mysterious person, and in an effort to save his life, Hakkai was forced to remove his limiter, thus releasing Seiten Taisei. The last time Goku had become Seiten Taisei, he had asked Hakkai to stop him, but Hakkai had been unable to do so. This time, Hakkai was determined to succeed, and so he removed his own limiters, despite facing the very real threat of losing himself to the madness caused among youkai by the Minus Wave. After a long, difficult fight, Hakkai was able to stop Seiten Taisei only by turning himself into a lightning conductor and knocking Goku unconscious until Gojyo could put his limiter back on. Hakkai, on the other hand, was killed by the electricity and woke up in Landel's.

Personality
Hakkai is most easily summed up by the phrase 'more than he seems.' On the surface, he's a very polite, kind, genial person, if a little distant, always ready with a kind word or gesture, willing to help everyone who needs him. People always talk about 'that nice young man' who's friends with the unruly halfbreed (Gojyo). He almost always has some sort of smile on his face, usually self-deprecating or the sort that wants you to trust him. He's the voice of reason most of the time, as well as peacekeeper and designated motherhen. He's not precisely a genius, but the time he's spent with books shows through in random bits of knowledge he's picked up here and there. He's got a lightning wit, and quite often uses it to quietly poke fun at people who try to get the better of him. At times he can seem too formal or even stiff around people he doesn't know well. With the people he trusts, Hakkai can develop almost endless bounds of loyalty and affection, although he never quite lets anyone close enough to hurt him like Kanan did, or at least he likes to think so. Winning that trust is nearly impossible, though. Only three people fall under that category: Sanzo, Gojyo, and Goku.

However, most of Hakkai's public persona is a mask he uses to fool himself as much as everyone else into forgetting the literal demon which his limiters keep in check. Hakkai is a master of guilt and hiding his true emotions. He describes himself as having a heart too small for feelings. Behind the smile, Hakkai's mind is cunning and often cruel. He's quite willing to needlessly break an enemy's arm before he kills him. He hates that side of himself almost as much as he hates the youkai he is despite appearances, and so he tries to pretend it doesn't exist. Every time someone pushes too hard, though, trying to get past the cheerful smile that never quite becomes real, they're likely to find themselves looking at a slightly more chilling smile. Gonou may be dead, but the part of him that allowed him to slaughter over 1, 500 innocents in revenge for his sister is still very much alive. The real Hakkai is closer to the youkai he becomes when his limiters come off, including a capacity for cruelty and hate that not many people have.

At Landel's
Hakkai has not been having a good time of it here at Landel's. His stay started out well enough, with his waking up just in time to make gingerbread houses (Day 20) with Gray Fox before heading over to lunch to be very surprised by the presence of Sanzo looking much the worse for wear. The day didn't get much better as he got to have a wonderfully enlightnening doctor visit with House. Of course, then came nightshift, which brought with it more meetings and a giant scorpion. The bright spot of the evening was meeting up with Kenren, who he mistook for Gojyo at first as he himself was confused for someone named Tenpou. After much confusion on both their parts, they finally decided to leave well enough alone.

Day 21 dawned bright and clear, and exceedingly dull, with various conversations and not much really happening. That nightshift, on the other hand, was a different story. Kenren, Hakkai, and Rabastan Lestrange made their way to the kitchens, managing a relatively productive and safe night.

Of course, that was only the calm before the storm. Day 22 started with a visit to the Chapel to listen to the Head Doctor's speech and to have an unexpected reunion with Son Goku, who had apparently slept through his first days at Landel's. Hakkai skipped brunch, citing a headache as the reason. A good thing he took the time off, too. He received a visit from Kanan, or someone very like her. Refusing to be duped by the imposter, he slapped her, only to be duly sedated by the staff and left to wait out the remainder of the day in his room. Being subjected to his roommate, Xigbar, at dinner didn't make the day much better. Feeling the insatiable urge to kill something, Hakkai found his way to the recreational field where he was first stopped by Darkwing Duck, then by a pair of hellish dogs, one of which he managed to kill after letting it gnaw on his arm. He then decided it would be a good idea to exhaust himself by using what little chi he could still access in Landel's to heal a wound on Darkwing's leg. He collapsed, drained.

Thus, Day 23 did not start nearly so well as the previous ones. The showers after breakfast were the icing on a wonderful cake of humiliation. Hakkai, being a private person, was naturally almost immediately surrounded by people he would rather only see while fully clothed, if then. Homura and Kenren eventually figured out that personal space was a good thing, just in time for him to escape them at lunch. He and Sanzo finally got a minute to talk during the activity shift, and then it was time for dinner with Xigbar again, where he was in much better form than the previous night. Nightshift saw a distinct lack of Kenren and a distinctly bad feeling about such while he and Sanzo set off for the doctors' offices, only to discover once there that they had no way of breaking in. Lacking anything better to do, they followed Hakkai's bad feeling to find Kenren stumbling out of his MU room. A Kenren that was looking disconcertingly like Gojyo.

So far Day 24 has been unremarkable, with only light conversation over breakfast to mention. How likely is it to stay that way, though?
