Danny Phantom
World
The world of Danny Phantom is divided into two parts; the normal, human world, and a Ghost Zone which contains a variety of strange creatures and beings, some but not all of which are ectoplasmic manifestations of post-human consciousness. The Ghost Zone and Earth are connected; anything spectacularly catastrophic in one world would affect the other. There are some natural openings between the Ghost Zone and Earth, but these tend to be unstable. More stable artificial openings have been made in the form of Ghost Portals; both the Fenton family and Vlad Masters have Ghost Portals, and some more powerful individuals in the Ghost Zone also have the ability to open portals to the human world.
Within the human world, technology is mostly at the standard of the early 21st century of the real Earth, although the inventions of individuals such as the Fentons and creations by the government to counter ghosts, not to mention creations by technology-oriented ghosts such as Skulker or Technus, seem to be far beyond the capacity of the real world. Hoverboards, ectoplasmic energy weapons and affordable personal spacecraft all exist within the Danny Phantom human world, but are limited to certain individuals involved in the creation of or use of these devices, usually as a part of ghost fighting. Valerie Gray's ghost-fighting uniform is a good example of this; created by Vlad Masters, it consists of a hoverboard which is hidden within her shoes until triggered and a bodysuit that can be quickly donned and released by some unclear method (y'ever see the Flash change costumes? Like that.) The outfit also has a variety of anti-ghost weapons hidden on her wrists, belt, and backpack, and hidden in her hoverboard.
The Fenton's weapons are also good examples of this; the Fenton Ectoskeleton is a kind of small 'mecha' or personally piloted robot which draws on the strength of the wearer, multiplying it 100x but draining the user potentially to death. It is powerful enough, when piloted by Danny Phantom, to fight off the Ghost King Pariah Dark at Pariah Dark's full strength, though Danny is nearly drained to death in the process. (Vlad later takes this device and combines it with human and ghost technology to remove the deadly energy drain, but the ectoskeleton is destroyed shortly thereafter. However, it demonstrates the power of a human not hindered by the energy loss in the suit as Danny's sister Jazz uses it.)
Of all the technology created by the Fentons, the most important is likely the Fenton Thermos, a device which can suck in ghosts. Danny Phantom usually uses this to capture ghosts, then later send them back through the portal into the Ghost Zone. Danny has been stuck in the Fenton Thermos by accident a few times as well, and from description it's cramped and uncomfortable (though the ghosts can still fit in the normal-sized thermos, regardless of their 'actual' size.) "Dan Phantom" (described below) is the only individual shown to be capable of making dents from the inside of a thermos trying to break out, and the only individual shown as left in the thermos rather than sent back to freedom in the Ghost Zone.
10 years in the future, Amity Park seems to have made a massive jump in technology with an almost Jetsons' style level of tech due to the advent of the dark Danny Phantom (called "Dan" in the tie-in video game and by fans, the closest he comes to having his own name.) This technological leap is probably based on inventions by the Fentons and similar individuals and groups; this may be a sign of what is possible in the face of a serious worldwide and ongoing threat triggering a wider use of the technology which was developed to fight ghosts. This future was erased, so there is no way of knowing if the inventions of the Fentons, Vlad Masters, and other groups will become so wide-spread (ghost shields, flying cars, and the like.)
The Fenton family lives in an unspecified state (although likely on the Great Lakes, as they are within a few days' driving distance of Wisconsin and walking distance of a 'beach') in the city of Amity Park.
Landmarks of Amity Park include:
FentonWorks, also known as Danny's family's house, with a rooftop Ops Center and an underground laboratory containing their Ghost Portal.
Axion Labs, a facility which develops satellites and similar technology and which is eventually purchased by Vlad Masters to become part of VladCo.
Casper High, Danny's high school; their football team is called the Ravens.
Nasty Burger, a popular hangout (and workplace) for teenagers; their special sauce is explosive when overheated.
Floody Waters, a waterpark popular with teenagers.
Amity Park Zoo, containing one of the only two remaining purple-backed gorillas in the world.
Elmerton, either a close neighbor or suburb of Amity Park, a much lower-class and run down area.
Polter Heights, a rich neighborhood where the Mayor's mansion resides.
Lake Eerie, a somewhat creepy small lake used for fishing and camping (distinguished from Lake Erie).
Vlad Masters' main home for the majority of the series is a castle in Wisconsin, the former home of the now-deceased (and haunting) 'Dairy King' of Wisconsin. He also has a chalet in the Colorado Rockies. Both of these homes have ghost labs in them, and his Wisconsin mansion seems to have two labs; an upstairs lab available to the public and a basement lab containing his own Ghost Portal. Underneath the Colorado chalet, Vlad has a secret cloning facility. Vlad also owns VladCo, and has purchased companies and renamed them in his image (such as "Mastersoft") but we have not seen the locations for any of these facilities.
The Ghost Zone is not a solid globe, but rather a number of locations seemingly floating in free space. The size of the Ghost Zone is unclear; although some characters call it 'infinite,' that seems to be an exaggeration. It is filled with doorways and entrances as well, leading to different ghosts' lairs and places within the Ghost Zone or on Earth. Taking a door at random can be very hazardous, as there is no telling what is on the other side. Portals also seem to be adjustable, as the Ghost Zone distance between and location of the openings of the Fenton and Plasmius Ghost Portals seem to change. Some locations in the Ghost Zone seem to be created after locations on Earth by ghosts who either want or can't escape memories of their past lives.
Landmarks in the Ghost Zone include:
Pariah's Keep, the resting place for the Ghost King Pariah Dark who was put into perpetual sleep centuries if not millenia ago and also the place where the Fright Knight, the spirit of Halloween and Pariah Dark's former servant, was sealed.
Clockwork's home, unnamed otherwise, where Clockwork seems to have portals which can lead to different places in space and time. The thermos which contains Dan Phantom is in Clockwork's lair.
The Observant's Headquarters, where the Observants make judgements on ghosts and, uh, observe.
Skulker's Lair, which has a skull-shaped cave and a jungle designed with traps for him to chase his prey.
Walker's Prison, where Walker leads a sort of "ghost police" and imprisons ghosts who break his often unfair or arbitrary Rules.
The Warehouse, where the Box Ghost keeps himself and his precious boxes.
Pandora's home, also the home of a number of ghosts either influenced by or the origins of Greek legends.
Aragon's castle, a place frozen in medieval times and ruled by Prince Aragon, who can turn into a dragon as can his sister Dora.
Casper High, a ghostly version apparently created by a ghost named Poindexter after his haunted memories of being bullied at the real Casper High; it seems to be frozen in time in the fifties.
The Far Frozen, a snow-filled area where Yeti-like creatures live, led by Frostbite. They guard the Ghost Zone's Infini-Map, which enables instant transport to any ghost portal wished by the holder, making Ghost Zone travel much easier.
Swirling Vortexes of Infinite Pain, Carnivorous Canyons, and similar locales that are unfriendly to visitors.
Culture
Before the creation of the Fenton Portal, the influence of ghosts on Amity Park seems to have been minimal. Ghosts did influence the human world enough that certain legends and stories were actually based on events within the Ghost Zone or involving ghosts, but this was not publicly realized. The Fenton Portal which gave Danny his powers also left Amity Park open for extended interaction with the Ghost Zone. The idea of ghosts was originally outlandish and the Fentons were considered crackpots. Later, as ghosts repeatedly attack or invade Amity Park, the world becomes more accepting of the idea of ghosts.
Despite public disbelief, it seems that the government has long been aware of the threat of ghosts, due to the creation of the "Guys in White," a Men in Black take-off aimed at controlling ghost activity. There are a few other private ghost hunting groups aside from the Fentons, and eventually Valerie Gray also takes up ghost hunting with weapons given to her in secret by Vlad.
Once ghosts are an undeniable fact of life for Amity Park and surrounding areas, efforts are taken to protect against ghosts and deal with ghost problems, including "Ghost Watch" news reports.
Danny Phantom's role in Amity Park and public view of him changes depending on circumstances. At first he is assumed to be evil as he is a ghost, and as (like most superheroes) he has a lot of collateral damage around his ghost fighting. This impression is not helped as a ghost named Walker possesses the mayor along with other citizens and stages a 'hostage situation' with Danny as the culprit. Later, Danny is mind controlled by a human named Freakshow and filmed committing robbery; although Freakshow is arrested with the goods, Danny's involvement seems guilty. His name is not known, so he is nicknamed "Inviso-Bill" to his great chagrin. It is only when he goes to fight the Ghost King Pariah Dark and shouts his actual name that he is recognized as protecting the city and referred to by the human public as Danny Phantom.
The Ghost Zone is referred to as "chaos" by Walker, but there are different authorities within the Ghost Zone who attempt to enforce some sort of order. The majority of ghosts seem to be at best self-interested, however, and a large number of ghosts seek conquest of either the Ghost Zone or the human world. Some areas are similar to the human world, small self-contained societies led by an individual of their choice, such as the 'Far Frozen.'
There does not seem to be a central source of authority; the most powerful ghost seen, Clockwork, chooses not to become involved in the petty conflicts which the Ghost Zone is filled with. The Observants have a high council and beg Clockwork to interfere when they become aware of the possibility of Danny becoming a greatly powerful evil ghost, otherwise claiming to only 'observe' rather than act; however, they are shown trying to imprison a powerful and dangerous ghost for his actions in the human world, and their power cannot be too great as Vlad Plasmius scatters an entire room of them singlehandedly. Walker is seen as a bully, and although he enforces 'The Rules' that he himself has written and has imprisoned a number of ghosts on trumped-up or made up charges, his "police" are also occasionally called upon by ghosts for enforcement of social behavior or to report crimes such as robbery.
The only universal rule for the ghosts seems to be the Christmas truce. All (sentient) ghosts refuse to fight on this day, taking a break from their usual internal hostilities and world-conquering efforts. When a ghost known as The Ghost Writer breaks this, they all break the truce in turn in order to stop him, and he is given to Walker's police, interestingly with the cooperation of several ghosts that earlier had staged a prison break from Walker.
There was once a ruler of the Ghost Zone, known as the Ghost King Pariah Dark. He ruled as a tyrant, with the spirit of Halloween the Fright Knight as his loyal follower, and command of an army of skeleton warriors. Pariah Dark was sealed into sleep, the items he used for power parted from him, by several powerful ghosts working together long ago. When Pariah Dark is awakened accidentally by Vlad Plasmius, the ghosts (including the supposed authority Walker) actually flee the Ghost Zone en masse and go into hiding in the human world until Danny Phantom leads the fight against Pariah Dark.
Powers
There is no sign of humans having supernatural powers within the world of Danny Phantom, only humans being able to use certain devices either created in the human world or in the Ghost Zone to boost their own strength or give themselves certain powers. An example of this is Freakshow, whose family has passed down an orb which enables him to brainwash and control ghosts at his will. He later gets the Reality Gauntlet, a ghost artifact which enables him to manipulate the human world; this is destroyed by Danny after Freakshow is tricked into turning himself into a ghost which Danny can capture via his Fenton Thermos. Technology in the human world can be formidable to ghosts, as described above.
Within certain areas of the Ghost Zone, humans are like ghosts, able to pass through walls and ghosts themselves without effort as though intangible. This is not universal and it isn't clear why some areas have impassable walls to humans but others are easily passed through. It seems to require some familiarity with this for ghosts to touch humans in the Ghost Zone, as Skulker (for an example) has no difficulties with it yet Walker's hands initially pass through. Later, Walker is equally able to grab humans in that Zone. The ability to choose tangibility or intangibility does not seem to be controlled by deliberate human will, and the ability to grab a human may be similar to the ghosts' ability to choose tangibility or intangibility in the human world. (That is, to take a form that would be tangible to humans or not, regardless of the location.)
Ghosts tend to have certain powers in general. Flight, intangibility, invisibility, ectoplasmic energy blasts and the ability to possess others seem to be common if not universal abilities. Demonstrated by fewer ghosts but still common is a sort of 'poltergeist' ability to control objects around them, making beakers explode or sending things flying through the air. Ghosts also often have individual powers, based on their personality or fixation. Many ghosts have a 'theme' or an obsession, which sometimes relates to their powers. One example is the Lunch Lady, a ghost fixated on food in general and meat specifically; she can control a variety of foods and food-related products including stoves and kitchenware, but she controls meat with the greatest ease and can take the form of a giant meat monster, as well as summoning a giant chicken wing (of doom) at one point for a weapon.
Technus is a more extreme example, as his ability to control technology seems to be nearly universal as an issue of backwards-compatibility (that is, simpler technology) but he has more difficulty with more advanced technology, having to upgrade himself and later working carefully through a password to access a satellite whereas most items he can control with seemingly little effort on an instinctual level. Skulker also has the ability to control technology, although only in the form of the battle suit he wears and he encounters trouble when he tries to upgrade by stealing and incorporating Tucker's PDA; he seems to get upgrades, however, and may do so usually with the help of other ghosts. Once something is truly programmed to be a part of his suit, Skulker has excellent control over it.
Technological control is limited to using singular devices with great effect for other ghosts. Ember, a rock idol ghost, uses a guitar which can control minds, amplify others' abilities and send out energy blasts as well as working as hoverboard. The Ghost Writer's keyboard can control reality itself, so long as he can keep up a rhyme scheme and type quickly enough. Technus himself has a weapon called the Lightning Rod which he uses when no other weapons/technology are available. Johnny 13 has a motorcycle which can fly or travel vertically up buildings. These ghosts seem to be able to summon or recreate these pieces of technology, making them personal and almost like inherent powers.
Less personal technology used as weapons in the Ghost Zone include the billy clubs which Walker's police use and which fire either energy blasts or bindings such as hand or foot cuffs. Walker also has a collar with a shock device which he uses to control Wulf, one of his prisoners. The Observants also have guards who wield staffs which deliver blasts, and which seem to be handed out to guards (Vlad is able to steal these and their armor.)
Elemental abilities are shown by some ghosts, mainly fire or ice. Many ghosts, such as Ember, seem to have fire for hair, and both Ember and Dan light things on fire via their hair at certain points. Other ghosts, including Klemper, the people of the Far Frozen, and eventually Danny Phantom have ice abilities, able to shoot energy or freeze things with eye or hand blasts.
The half-ghosts (called "halfas" in one episode) have demonstrated these powers:
Transformation into a ghost form
Invisibility
Flight (to at least 112 mph)
Intangibility
Overshadowing (possessing and controlling another person; it seems to be more difficult between some individuals than others)
Energy blasts (from hands, feet, fingertips, eyes, and the rear at one point, or an entire-body burst)
Energy whips
Energy shields
Duplication
Energy tornados (Vlad Plasmius only)
Ice blasts/generation (Danny Phantom only, later in the series)
Ghost sense (only shown from Danny Phantom and Dan Phantom)
