Fables
World
The world of "Fables" is set in modern day America. The premise of the comic is that many hundreds of years ago, Fairytale characters lived in their own homeworlds on another plane. However, an evil entity known as "The Adversary" from another of these worlds began to conquer, kill, and enslave the residents of surrounding lands and quickly spread out amongst all the worlds. Many Fables made a run for it and managed to escape to our realm, where they have lived among us in secret ever since.
The rule with Fables is that if a character with the same name shows up in more than one story, it is the same character. Therefore, Jack, Prince Charming, and the Bigby are the same in as their counterparts in ANY story with that character's name (unless stated otherwise).
Culture
Traditionally, it was the European fairytales that made it to America first. Therefore, Fabletown society is very Western in its habits. Recently, though, the Arabian fairytales have been introduced to the neighborhood, which led some strained tensions. The non-human Fables (such as talking animals or inanimate objects, little people, and giants) are kept on a large area of land in upstate New York owned by Fabletown known as "The Farm". There have been uprisings because the inhabitants are used to being able to roam free in their native lands and find they cannot in our society. Generally, though, if there are tensions amongst Fables, it's on account of who that Fable is or what they have done.
Fables do have an unspoken rule, however, which is that their Fable nature is not to be revealed to "Mundys" (ordinary people, who are of a "mundane" life). Fables are willing to kill to keep their existence secret, whether it be a mundy or each other.
Powers
The powers of the Fable depends on who they are. Some merely have elongated lifespans, whereas others have real abilities. Some examples of Fables with powers are:
Snow White/Goldilocks/Jack Horner: All three have been shown to be able to take very serious amounts of lethal damage and recover (this is believed to be because of their popularity amongst the Mundy world). Snow White had her head blown apart by a sniper rifle; Goldilocks had a hatchet put in her head, fell off a cliff, got hit by a truck, and floated face down in the ocean, being eaten by fish for months; Jack has been hit by multiple cars, impaled, and even blown up with a car bomb.
Bigby Wolf: Bigby has that ability (thanks to a magical wound he received) to transform between human and a giant wolf form (as he was originally the Big Bad Wolf). He is able to heal, much like those I previously mentioned, but is also capable of blowing great gusts of wind- enough to level forests.
Kay: (Snow Queen) Kay, thanks to a shard of glass from a magic mirror that sits in his eyes, can see the true intention of people. He's often used to weed out traitors (though he can't always be relied upon, as he tends to destroy his eyes).
Frau Totenkinder: (Hansel and Gretel) She is a witch who has vast amounts of magic, because of her profession and old age. She can drain magic from others, is capable of serious harm, as well as maintaining the magic necessary to keep Mundys from recognizing when less than ordinary things are happening in Fabletown.
For the most part, though, Fables are just long lived with the experience of old age and their homelands up their sleeves.
