Getbackers
The world of Getbackers is almost exactly like the ‘real’ world. There are only slight differences, the major one being Mugenjou. Mugenjou (pictured to the right and translated as ‘Limitless Fortress’) is a huge tower found in the middle of Shinjuku (a district in Tokyo, Japan). This tower looms over the city, casting half of it in shadow, but the people who live there rarely look up at it. No one remembers when it appeared or even who created it, many believe it has simply always been there.
Mungejou is divided into three 'parts'. Lower Town, the bottom part, where the 'weaker' people live and try to survive. Lower Town is victim gang war and poverty as well as raids from the middle part of Mugenjou, Beltline. Beltline is known for it's strong and monstrous denizens, most of the time people cannot make it past the Beltline. The higher part, called Babylon City, is where the 'gods' of Mugenjou live and where the Archive is located.
Inside Mugenjou dwell over twenty thousand people who are so fierce that the government of Japan abandoned them and wrote Mugenjou off of the map. This is the place where the strong prey on the weak and people try hard to cling to hope. Outside though, they are forgotten people, at least that’s what everyone believes.
Culture
Again, the culture of Getbackers is very similar to the real world, minus some slight differences. For one, the technology is slightly better, they created Mugenjou and also have a titanium ally that has many uses. Perhaps the biggest difference is there are professions that are widely known and accepted that don’t really exist.
Here are a few of the most notable:
Dakkanya (Recovery Service) – These professionals ‘recover’ lost or stolen items. Clients come to them when they are missing things that are very important to them.
Important Dakkanya: The Getbackers (Mido Ban and Amano Ginji), Fuyuki Shido
Annaiya (Information Service) – These professionals are the ones you go to if you need information. It’s their business to gather facts and rumors and use relay them to those who have the yen.
Important Annaiya: Fuuchouin Kazuki
Hakobiya (Transport Service) – These professionals are the ones that transport and protect goods (be they stolen or otherwise). Clients approach them if they need something to get from Point A to Point B in one piece… especially if there might be people after it.
Important Hakobiya: Kurodou Akabane, Kudo Himiko, Maguruma Gouzou
Mamoriya (Protection Service) – These professionals protect goods, they often work with hakobiya if the client requires extra protection.
Important Mamoriya: Hishiki Ryūdō, Miroku Seven
Chuukaiya (Negotiation Service) – These professionals are the ‘go-between’ of clients and the other services. Usually they deal in dangerous jobs with rich clients that would be too embarrassed to approach any of the above people personally.
Important Chuukaiya: Hevn
Powers
Getbackers canon sports a variety powers that have many different origins including family bloodlines, curses, intense training, experimentation, drugs, and too much time in Mugenjou. Mugenjou is a sort of a ‘festering ground’ for people with strange abilities and many ‘normal’ people develop abilities if they spend an extended amount of time inside of the tower (and somehow survive).
