Earth. AD 2307. Fossil fuels have been nearly exhausted and humans rely on an array of solar power generators orbiting the Earth, supported by 3 massive structure called Orbital Elevators, reaching up into space from the planet's surface. Each of the three of the world's major powers control access to one of the Elevators and thus, control access to the unlimited power derived from them.
The Union of Solar Energy and Free Nations: The Union consists of all of the countries in North and South America, Japan and Australasia and control is controlled from the United States. The Orbital Elevator is located in South America
The Human Reform League: The HRL is centered around China, Siberian Russia and India, but also includes most Asian countries such as Korea, Taiwan and Papua New Guinea. They control the Orbital Elevator located in the Pacific Ocean.
The Advanced European Union: The AEU is made up of Europe, European Russia, Iceland, Greenland and Turkey and they control the Orbital Elevator located in Africa.
However, with access to the solar energy being controlled by the three major powers, conflicts frequently break out between countries, with those countries who had relied on fossil fuel exports have been plunged into poverty because of the elevators.
Because of these conflicts, the private military organisation Celestial Being was founded by Aeolia Schinberg with the aim of eradicating war and uniting the world. To these ends, Celestial Being createdGundams, powerful mobile suits, which would intervene in conflicts around the world, forcing an end to the fighting.

As with modern day Earth, a huge variety of cultures exists on the Earth of Gundam 00, varying from country to country as well as within countries.
