Hellsing

World

Hellsing is a manga written and drawn by Kouta Hirano. The story is set in modern day England, around the late 1990s. It focuses on the Hellsing organization, found by and named after Abraham Van Hellsing after the apparent defeat of Count Dracula. Its current heir, Integral Fairbrook Wingates Hellsing is the current director of the secret organization, whom by night, slay vampires for God, Queen and Country. She is also wields the Hellsing family's greatest weapon -- a super-vampire by the name of Alucard against her adversaries. She is assisted by her butler and confidant, Walter Dornez; and Alucard's young fledgling; Seras Victoria. She also has a vast, private army and arsenal at her disposal.

While the citizens of England are unaware of the war waged during the night, Hellsing works tirelessly to destroy any undead threats which surface in the English countryside. This has been going on for a while now, with Alucard crushing any of the vampiric miscreants Hellsing is pitted against.

Hellsing has frequent run ins with Iscariot 13, a group of assassin-priests hailing from the Vatican in Italy. Iscariot dislikes the fact that Hellsing uses and houses vampires in its premises and actively seeks to eradicate them all. They have yet to succeed. Also, there is the Millenium organization, essentially the remnants of Hitler's Nazis. They, wish to plunge the world into another World War, which they want to last forever. They plan to use both Hellsing and Iscariot to fulfill that agenda.

Culture

Hellsing canon pretty much reflects reality, with current culture/religion/etc. There is specific emphasis on religion, particularly Protestants and Catholics and how the both of them are at odds with each other.

Powers

The human characters in Hellsing do not possess any supernatural powers, save for sheer personality alone, or special training in various forms of weaponry.

There are two types of vampires in Hellsing, the so-called 'true' ones, and the ones mass-produced by the Millenium organization.

'True' vampires have all the weaknesses of traditional vampires, which include their aversions to holy symbols, items and maybe garlic. It hasn't been proven yet. However, they are near impossible to kill. The magnitude of their prowess, presumably gets greater with age. Vampires can create ghouls from any non-virgin they feed from and subsequently kill. They can walk in the light of the sun, but prefer not to as, to quote Alucard; "Sunlight is not some great enemy. I just hate it." They can manipulate the minds of mortals, bending them to their will and also possess a form of telekinesis. They have an extremely accelerated rate of regeneration, and Alucard has been seen to return from being reduced to paste, even. They also have power over the shadows.

The mass-produced ones, often called 'fakes', don't have most of the powers and survivability of their distant 'cousins'. They can be killed easily with a shot through the head or the heart and cannot be exposed to the light of the sun lest they burn. They have enhanced strength and agility, but again, those pale in comparison with the real McCoy, so to speak. Also, the fakes can create ghouls out of anyone they feed of on, be it virgin or not.
