Backstory
Ken was born in Niigata, and his family was mostly normal. He had a father and a mother, unfortunately, his mother died. After this event, Ken drew into himself and was sent to a church by his father, with a nun that practiced psychotherapy to help children. (In actuality, the nun was brainwashing them into killing people for her, and Weiss is sent to kill her in a mission covered by the Dramatic Precious: Holy Children CD.)

Before joining Kritiker (and by extension, Weiss,) Ken was a goalie in the J-League, and one of the best players on his team. While playing in a championship game, he was drugged and therefore lost the game for his team. While this ordinarily would have been bad enough for him, on top of this, he was suspected of participating in an illegal soccer gambling ring and kicked out of the J-League. Disgraced, he began to investigate the circumstances behind his drugging—and got too close to the truth. While meeting with his friend Kase, a fellow J-Leaguer and childhood friend, in an abandoned warehouse (very smart, really,) both he and Kase were attacked by unidentified thugs. Kase was dragged away, screaming his friends name in apparent concern, and Ken was left lying on the ground while the building burned down around him. Rescued by Kritiker, Ken was trained and put into their new fatal strike team, Weiss.

After the team was complete with the addition of Yohji and Aya (whom Ken both greeted in a very unorthodox way—punching them in the face,) the team began to take missions. One of them was to take out the leader and second of the Creeper gang. One of the targets was, surprise, Kase. Ken wanted to believe his old friend had nothing to do with the gang’s activities, but he was misled and used (again) in Kase’s plot to kill the gang leader and take over Creeper. Ken found out that Kase was the one who’d drugged him years back, and the one who’d nearly had him killed in the warehouse fire at the end of Kase’s gun, after which Kase tried to kill him again. Ken faced his once-best friend once more on the steps of Asia Corporation, Creeper’s headquarters, and was shot again. When asked why he wouldn’t die, Ken replied that he didn’t like hell. With tears in his eyes, he carried out the mission and killed Kase.

After the Creeper mission, Ken met a girl named Yuriko, who he fell in love with. She asked him to leave Japan with her and go to Australia, and Ken decided that he would leave Weiss and grant her wish. However, he was later convinced to stay—no one who’d killed as he had could live a normal life again. Yuriko left Japan, and Ken watched her plane take off.

After all this, missions were fairly easy on Ken angst-wise, until the end of Kapitel where basically everyone in Weiss got their asses kicked. In the OVA, Ken started to spiral down—he took Akira’s death very hard, wondering why everyone he cared about had to die, he’s the one who carried out the mission and killed the American general...by shoving Akira’s shotgun down his throat and pulling the trigger.

The drama CDs were even tougher on him. After the events of Kapitel and the OVA, Ken was really starting to lose control over himself, enjoying missions more and more, and eventually waiting for them to come in so he’d have the chance to kill someone. He then met Reiko, the two instantly connected. Ken seemed to have a lot in common with her, and she even understood his anticipation of killing, even if she didn’t know his history. However, their relationship ended badly (as seems to be standard for Weiss,) as she was the target of their next mission. Ken was the one who struck the killing blow. After the dissolution of Weiss, Ken stayed in Japan—unable to continue on his own, without the missions, without Weiss. He was also the first to meet Kyou, who’d been paid to attack Ken on the street. When Aya returned to Japan at Mamoru/Omi’s request to reform the assassin group, he first stopped Ken from killing Kyou, then told him that Weiss was starting again. Asked if he would return, Ken agreed with barely a second thought. After Yohji returned, and Kyou and Sena added (the last two, Ken didn’t approve of) Yohji and Ken were sent off to Europe to investigate possible Esset facilities there, while Aya, Kyou, and Sena infiltrated the equivalent facility in Japan, Koua Academy. After Kyou’s death, Yohji and Ken were recalled to Japan, to assist in the undercover mission at Koua. Ken was quick to blame Sena for Kyou’s death, trusting the newest Weiss even less than he did before. During the end of the Epitaph mission, though, he and Sena were moving almost in unison, understanding at least that while they didn’t necessarily get along, it was necessary to work together. Ken also encouraged Sena to go after Fumie Kisaragi, much like he’d gone after targets related to him in the past, to try to find the truth behind it all. In the final moments of the mission, his impulsiveness shone through when he sacrificed himself to stop the superpowered Todo clone, figuring out that it was his voice that carried his power, and pinned him from behind, telling Aya to run them both through. Omi managed to carry him out, though Ken was badly injured, he did eventually recover.

At the end of Gluhen, Ken gets himself put in prison, a favor from Omi, to think over things—what he’d become, what he’d done, and to come to terms with it all. He finally starts coming back from the dark place he’d been, deciding that once he felt he was himself again, he’d go after Aya. However, before he left Japan, he ran into the amnesiatic Yohji, who was still carrying Aya’s katana with him, hanging onto it even though he’d married and started a new life. Yohji couldn’t remember why he kept the sword, and didn’t know why he could trust Ken with it, but asked Ken to return it to its proper owner. Ken then went to Omi for help finding Aya, and left Japan.

Personality
In Kapitel, Ken was a sweetheart, loyal, he didn’t really like to kill but he knew he had to do it anyway and would to complete his missions. He tends to look to the best in people, to the point where he can be fooled by their appearances. Much the same, with Ken, what you see is what you get—he’s honest (though he will most certainly keep his secrets) and generally a pretty happy and easy going guy. He’s not much of one to look deeper, preferring to go off first impressions. He also loves children, and gets along with them well. One thing he can’t stand is liars, understandable with his past. He’s quick to act, and slow to think, very much the most impulsive member of Weiss. Unfortunately for him, at the end of Kapitel, while Farf was busy cracking his skull, he seemed to have cracked something else in Ken’s poor abused head. During the Dramatic Precious drama CDs, he states that he hasn’t killed one person outside of a mission—yet. He gets to the point where he looks forward to a mission so he can off someone. When he first appears in Gluhen, Ken is grinning like a maniac and happily disemboweling people. He’s far more violent and unhinged, and while he controls himself during off-mission time, when he’s in mission mode he’s pretty much nuts, enjoying fighting, killing, and causing destruction and mayhem. But he still loves soccer! Luckily for everyone involved, the time he spent cooling his heels in prison did actually seem to do him some good, after his release he was very nearly back to his old self.

Currently, off mission, he’s a friendly and open person, helpful and energetic. He deeply respects Aya. There is an underlying darkness to him, the enjoyment he got from missions and killing hasn’t completely left, and he’s trying to redeem himself from that and leave his past behind, or at least acknowledge the impact it had on him and realize that he’s changed from it. He still is better at working his problems out by fighting them instead of thinking about him—he’s admitted himself that he’s not too smart. In mission mode, he’s professional and calm, he does actively try to keep himself in line.
