Backstory/General Information:
(Please note that some of the information is speculative since there is almost NO background given for Gin. I researched as best I could and filled in the blanks.)

Gin is a shinigami(Soul reaper, Death God, Death's Angel...). In short, a shinigami protects the living and sends souls that cling to this world on to the next. If a soul stays for too long, it starts to degrade, eventually becoming something called a "hollow." Hollows will attack and devour other souls endlessly, so the shinigami also have the responsibility of stopping them if they appear.

Most humans don't remember much of their first lives, and Gin is no exception. He remembers little of what happened while he was actually alive, only that he died young. He was poor and something of a social outcast even in the afterlife, but he also had spiritual energy, something found in very few souls. This spiritual energy(Reiatsu) is part of how the Shinigami fight and their souls produce it naturally. It is most often prevalent in the high-born families, but once in a while, the lower and middle class will have it too.

Gin was terribly poor and lived in an abandoned house in the seventy-ninth district of West Rukongai. He finally made a friend who would also one day become a shinigami, a girl by the name of Matsumoto Rangiku. He found her collapsed on the side of the road, hungry and fatigued because of her spirit energy. He fed her, introduced himself, and they soon became friends.

The two were close companions growing up until he left to become a shinigami in Soul Society, hoping to create a better life than the one they had shared in poverty. She followed and the two of them attended the shinigami's academy in Soul Society, a training ground for new officers in the ranks of the Gotei 13. It was difficult not to notice the corruption in the higher ranking officers, especially when, even in among the elite, people from Rukongai were still treated as trash. Gin was a fast learner though and as long as he and Rangiku could pave their own way, he didn't mind.

There was a large upset in Soul Society before he ever graduated. When two captains and the leader of the remote squad all left Soul Society and were branded as traitors, warrants put out for their arrest. Urahara Kisuke of the 12th squad, Isshin (Kurosaki) of the 5th squad, and Shihouin Yoruichi.

Gin became involved in the plans of another traitorous group in Soul Society, Aizen Sousuke and Kaname Tousen. Seeing potential, Aizen kept Gin in his ranks,pushing him in the direction he wanted while pulling Gin further from his only friend.

Along the way, Gin found he agreed with some of Aizen's goals, but not his methods, nor those of Soul Society. For unknown reason, he is the only one Aizen trusts. He was unable to break away from Aizen and instead began his own plans to take the man down from the inside.

Gin served as vice-captain in Aizen's squad and eventually became captain of the Third Division squad. He was trained in both Demon Arts(kido) and swordplay. Each shinigami has a unique weapon that is actually a part of them, or a part of their soul, called a "Zanpakutou." Each Zanpakutou also has it's own name and usually a unique ability as well. Gin's is called "Shinsou" and thus far we have only seen it in its first form, which allows him to change the length of the sword, causing it to shoot out in a flash. Shinsou looks like a japanese short sword(wakizashi), rather than a katana and is often underestimated because of its size.

Gin(as well as Aizen) chooses Kira Izuru, a somewhat spineless, but loyal shinigami as his vice-captain. Gin still keeps his distance from people and is thought of as a shady and suspicious looking character, which is crucial to Aizen's plan later when suspicions are purposely cast on him to divert attention.

As the time nears for their plans to be set in motion, Gin has some misgivings about their plans. He would prefer less people get hurt, but at the same time, knows hardly anyone trusts him to lead them to safety. He gives warnings, though they're masked and often subtle and ignored. He even aides Abarai when his own squad captain had abandoned him and sent for medical help for the vice-captain. When Aizen's plans come to fruition, Gin is there to help Aizen fake his death, then Aizen assassinates the hierarchy, and they escape with a powerful weapon, the Hougyoku.

In Aizen's presence Gin will rarely speak unless there is no one else to hear them. In front of others he follows orders, though sometimes he hesitates and often that ever-present smile disappears. Behind the scenes, Gin is openly mocking toward Aizen, often chiding him on his poor discipline among his troops and his battle plans.

Currently in the manga series he is with Aizen and his lackeys, the Arrancar, in their hiding place, Hueco Mundo. Soul Society has supposed that Aizen wants to obtain the King's Key and assassinate the king of Soul Society.

Personality:

Gin is dangerously clever, tells little about himself, and always has a smile on his face. He claims not to regret anything, yet apologizes for his traitorous actions only once, to his childhood friend Matsumoto. He has a lot of ties and memories connected to her that he hasn't quite let go of. She is the only person he didn't have to put on a front for. Despite his masked exterior, and the rumors that he is frightening and bloodthirsty, he has yet to be seen actually taking another's life. He is however, extremely powerful and fought one on one against another captain without even releasing his sword's true potential. His real intentions are often misinterpreted and even more often, completely unknown. He sees an end goal that most others don't, they're too deluded by the dogma and absolute orders of Soul Society to believe that something else could exist. He isn't one for wanton destruction. Every move, every gesture and word is carefully calculated.

Zanpakutou and Demon Arts

As mentioned above, Gin is a Shinigami and is well-versed in both Demon Arts(offensive and defensive magic) and swordplay. Most of his powers are based on his great spiritual energy or "Reiatsu." His sword, Shinsou's release is triggered when Ichimaru says the phrase "Ikorose," loosely translated as "Shoot him dead" or "shoot to death." It extends at high velocity to impale opponents. The sword also has two more powerful forms, a final release, which is depicted only in the video game as a move that makes swords rain from the sky, and a "bankai" or ultimate form, which has not yet been seen.

A bit of this is manufactured since there is little in canon to go on.

Gin keeps a very close watch on the things he says and does. It would likely be difficult to sneak in too deep for his carefully guarded secrets. However, these are likely what one might find:

Memories of growing up with Rangiku in Rukongai. Terrible poverty, lots of death, always hungry.
Gin was often shunned by society in general because of his appearance. The silver hair and pale eyes aren't exactly normal for most Japanese.
Rangiku is the only person he'll actually trust. All others he acts pleasant to, but holds under suspicion and keeps at an arm (or sword)'s length.
It's not exactly a secret, but he betrayed all of Soul Society. Though it wasn't entirely his fault, he still carries blame for it and wishes for change, though he may not agree with how Aizen has gone about it.
Gin and Rangiku shared a brief and bittersweet time together until Aizen pulled them apart. He's afraid that if the wrong people found out, they could hurt her or use her against him, so he's been keeping her at a distance at Landel's.
What he wants most? A happy ending believe it or not. He's hoping to line up all the pieces so that things will come out alright.
