Backstory
[In short: Just after that Grimmjow/Ichigo battle in Hueco Mundo]
When Orihime was just a child, her parents used to argue. They drank liberally and abused their children, both Orihime and her older brother, Sora. It was what she started life around, and it had a definite effect on how Orihime would develop in the future. Luckily for her though, things didn't remain like that for long. As soon as he could, Sora moved away and took Orihime with him. He raised her in place of their mother and father, and Orihime loved him dearly for it. In return she tried to be as little trouble as possible, always cheerful and polite because she knew how hard her brother struggled on her behalf.
He loved her hair, so she grew it out for him, but as she got older she realized she was developing a lot faster than the children around her. She was bullied a lot in school for this, and the older she got the more rebellious and confused she became. To her brother's dismay, she cut her hair to try and fit in with the other children, but it was always hard for her to get close to them. When she came home crying, he comforted her.
Then came the day when things changed. The morning before he left for work, her brother gave her a pair of snowflake hair clips as a gift. Orihime thought they were childish, and fearing something else that would cause division between her and the other girls, she rejected them. She argued with her brother, and by the end of it she got so upset and angry that she didn't even bother to say 'See you later' when he left for work. He was hit by a car that morning, and died despite Orihime's efforts to drag him to the Kurosaki family clinic.
Orihime never forgot her brother. From then on she wore the hairclips every day. She was all alone for a while, so she visited the shrine every day and talked to her brother. Then she met Tatsuki, her first real friend, who saved and protected her from bullies and encouraged her to grow her hair out of she wanted to. She stopped visiting the shrine as often, and she started spending more time with her small group of friends. They were fiercely protective of her and so the bullying mostly stopped by high school.
When walking home with Rukia one evening, Orihime almost walked into oncoming traffic and was saved by an unknown force. She developed a strange bruise on her leg, but laughed it off though she knew what it was; Sora was looking out for her. He always had. Rukia suspected a hollow. They were both right.
That night while she talked with Tatsuki, the hollow attacked. Orihime's soul was knocked out of her body. Though she was confused by what happened she quickly dismissed it when the hollow went after Tatsuki. Try as she might to help or communicate, Tatsuki couldn’t hear her or feel her and it was Ichigo who saved her from the hollow's first attack. Even when the hollow used her as a shield he kept standing, taking every hit it threw at him.
The hollow asks her why she's forgotten him. Orihime looks into its eyes, knowing before she looks what she will see. It's her brother. The hollow takes her inside and puts her down, and she asks him why he's acting this way. He says he's lonely. She stopped coming to see him, and if she still loves him at all she'll obey him like she should and wait while he eats Ichigo. Orihime tells him he shouldn't be doing this, and the hollow simply grabs her and tells her it’s her own fault anyway.
Ichigo breaks through the window and fights the hollow again. This time, he has the upper hand, and in the brief pause in battle he asks the hollow if he knows why big brothers are born first. He says it's to protect the brothers and sisters that come after. The hollow still says that Orihime belongs to him, because he raised her and protected her all that time. He even offers to spare the lives of the others if Orihime agrees to come with him.
The hollow manages to disarm Ichigo, but just as he's about to bite into him Orihime moves in front of him with arms outstretched and takes the blow. She's finally ready to accept responsibility for what happened. She apologizes for holding onto him so long. She was just as cruel as he was because it’s her fault he had to exist like this, unable to move on to heaven. She explains that she only stopped praying for him because wanted her brother to know she was happy now, and that he didn't need to worry.
She drops to the ground, spent. But even as Rukia heals her, she forces herself to stay awake long enough to say what she couldn't the day he died; 'See you later'.
Sora stabs himself with Ichigo's sword, and Orihime cries.
-
From then on Orihime begins to develop spiritual awareness like most people who come in contact with Ichigo. She pretended to forget that night, though in reality she never did. As the week progresses, life seems to be moving more normally. Orihime introduces Ichigo to Ishida, and explains that he's not a bad person, he just acts mean sometimes.
She doesn’t know that later Ishida will do something monumentally stupid and call hundreds of hollows to Kankura town.
While waiting for Tatsuki to finish practice that evening, the school is attacked by Numb Chandelier. The hollow brainwashes most of the students and forces them to attack Orihime, who can see it. When Tatsuki comes to her rescue, the hollow struggles with her and finally overpowers her as well, turning her against Orihime like the rest. Orihime won't fight against her closest friend, and the hollow mocks her. More important than that though, Orihime can see how much it's tearing Tatsuki apart and finally her own spirit powers awaken.
The ShunShunRikka appear to her and name themselves. They teach her quickly how to use her power, and Orihime makes quick work of Numb Chandelier. The effort it takes proves to be too much and she faints after the battle. When she awakens she watches Ichigo and Uryuu fight off the remaining hollows.
-
Just before Rukia is captured, she has lunch with Orihime and some girls from the class as usual. They tease Rukia about her feelings for Ichigo, and Rukia denies them. Orihime harbors a crush on Ichigo herself, but she's disappointed when Rukia denies the same because she would have been happy to have someone who could relate. Then they could overpower Ichigo's defenses somehow with the combined power of their crushes. Obviously. It makes much sense in her head.
Orihime doesn’t resent Rukia's feelings. When Rukia turns up missing, Orihime confronts Ichigo about it and encourages him to go after her because he's so dejected. They decide to rescue Rukia. Orihime and Chad go to train with Urahara and Yoroichi, while Uryuu leaves to train on his own despite her request for him to join them. Orihime learns to use her power without calling the names of her ShunShunRikka first, and they all throw themselves into the soul society in high style. Running for their lives.
They start off together. Ichigo attempts to break in by fighting the gatekeeper, but one of the captains, Gin, kicks his ass and chops off the gatekeepr's arm. Orihime heals the gatekeeper and they retreat, unable to enter any way except one.
After some struggle, Kukaku Shiba cannon balls them into the seireitei, and it begins.
-
All the 'intruders' are separated by their landing and Orihime ends up with Uryuu. They manage to keep a low profile by stealing some uniforms from the shinigami. It's not long before they encounter trouble though. The captain of the tenth division, Mayuri Kurotsuchi engages in battle with Uryuu, his interest soon divided between the pretty Quincy and the pretty girl. Uryuu makes the soul society shinigami take Orihime away to a safer place and is captured by Mayuri after the battle.
Orihime meets up with Kenpachi and Yachiru, and together they bust her captured friends out of prison. Orihime and the cavalry show up just after Ichigo's battle with Byakuya. She tries to catch Ichigo but instead they end up bumping heads and Ichigo incurs further injury, as such is their love and his luck with women.
Needless to say, the team is still beaten by Aizen, who reveals the extent of his plans then takes the Hōgyoku from Rukia's body and ascends with the other traitors to Hueco Mundo.
Rukia remains in the soul society, and the others return to the human world for some rest and training. The Hōgyoku will awaken in the winter. They have until then to prepare for battle.
-
The separation from the shinigami is short-lived. Arrancar arrive in their world and attack some nearby humans. Tatsuki is among them, the only person able to stand after attack because her spiritual sense has grown as well. Orihime and Chad arrive on the scene, but their attacks fail pathetically. Chad's arm is injured, and even while Orihime tries to heal him and defend the three of them, her shields are broken. When Tsubaki tries to attack, he's smashed to pieces. Ichigo has to save them once again.
The shinigami from the soul society get wind of what's going on and arrive in the human world to help out. Orihime meets up with Matsumoto Rangiku, who stays at her house with Hitsugaya. Matsumoto gets Orihime to open up about her feelings, and she talks about her crush-that's-more-than-a-crush.
Throughout the arc, Orihime's struggle with her feelings for Ichigo becomes more and more pronounced. She notices how sad and dejected he looks after Rukia has left and she tries her best to cheer him up though she knows there's nothing she can do. When Rukia returns, it's like the sun has come out again. Even if Ichigo himself is oblivious to his feelings, Orihime isn't, and while she still counts Rukia as a close friend she can't help but feel jealous and completely inadequate in comparison. When she revels her feelings, Matsumoto tickle attacks her and tells her it's fine like that. Both she and Rukia know Ichigo needs them to stand, and that should be enough. If there are negative emotions around her, she should stand up for herself and put a stop to it. (Then there are some naked cuddles with Rangiku.)
-
Later she finds the place where Ichigo is training and delivers the message about Aizen's plan to him. Ichigo sees his own path clearly, even with so many complexities lying over it because that's the way Ichigo is. She realizes she needs to get stronger too but Urahara firmly denies her saying she doesn’t have a spirit that's suited to battle. She mistakenly thinks he means she'll get in the way, and she agrees no to be a burden to anyone. After all Tsubaki, Orihime's will to fight, is broken and she can't fix him on her own.
Now that she's able to see without so many heavy emotions weighing her down, the first person she runs to is Rukia. She tells Rukia what happened and the shinigami gets offended on her behalf saying Urahara's completely mad and that she should fight with the rest of them if she wants to. Rukia agrees to help her train to become stronger, and even goes so far as to request help from Ukitake to do it.
Orihime learns from one of the vizards that Tsubaki can be healed easily even without the pieces, and she should be able to do it herself. With Tsubaki whole again, Rukia and Orihime begin their own training.
However the Arrancar attack again while they're in the soul society and Rukia must leave immediately. She promises to wait for Orihime, who must take a different pathway.
Orihime never meets her. The attack turns out to be a distraction meant solely to capture her while she's moving through the corridor to the human world. The two shinigami appointed to go with her are severely injured but Orihime heals them and agrees to go with Ulquiorra, who threatens to kill them if she resists.
He says she is now their property, and will obey every order without resistance or her friends will suffer. Her only response can be 'Yes'. Orihime agrees, and is taken.
-
Ulquiorra gives her a bracelet that will make her invisible, and a grace period to say goodbye to one person and set her affairs in order. Orihime writes a list or groceries and chores for her guests, and at the bottom she writes 'goodbye, halcyon days'. She knows whatever will come now, there will be no going back. She's said her goodbyes to that happiness.
-
Orihime finds herself in Ichigo's room for her goodbye. She bends over to kiss him, and although he'll never know, although this is her last chance, she can't do it. There were many people she wanted to say goodbye to, and many, many things she wanted to do with her life like taste every flavor of ice-cream and every doughnut and become an astronaut or own a cake shop… She wishes she could live five times over and she knows, each of those five times, she would fall in love with the same person.
-
She's taken to the fortress Las Noches, where Aizen resides. He shows asks her to demonstrate her powers by healing Grimmjow's missing arm, which she does much to the amazement of the other Arrancar. Aizen goes on to explain her power more thoroughly as a reversal in time, claiming it defies even god in its existence. Grimmjow gets her to 'heal' the number six as well, and runs his new hand through Luppi much to Orihime's horror.
-
Orihime is given a simple room and clothes similar to those of the Arrancar. She is told that her friends have broken through to try and rescue her, and she can't help but feel good that they would still come.
Now that she has 'joined their ranks', Aizen even shows her the Hogyoku as a token of his trust, as he puts it. Orihime is to use her power to repair it because it has been damaged from the forced awakenings. Orihime resolves to erase it from existence at the first opportunity.
-
Orihime senses first Chad, then Rukia's defeat at the hands of the Arrancar. She's so distraught she refuses to eat, but Ulquiorra tells her that isn't an option. She insists that they are alive but he tells her that only fools venture into Hueco Mundo with so little power. She shouldn't worry about the two because eventually they will all be defeated.
Orihime slaps him across the face. Ulquiorra leaves, reminding her again to eat before he has to make her. Orihime breaks down and cries.
-
Two Arrancar break into her room while Ulquiorra is away, and begin torturing her. Grimmjow shows up in the nick of time and nearly kills them; when Orihime asks him why, he says it's payback for his arm. He tells her to heal herself because he's not dragging a battered woman around. Orihime refuses and heals the Arrancar first.
-
Grimmjow binds her hands and drags her to Ichigo, who is bleeding from an earlier battle. He tells her to heal Ichigo quick before Ulquiorra shows up so they can have a fair battle. She refuses, knowing Ichigo will only get hurt again. Ulquiorra does show up but Grimmjow traps him temporarily.
Ichigo tells her to go ahead and heal him because he'll definitely win. Orihime believes him. She heals his wounds and the two of them move off to fight. Ichigo tells her to shield herself and the young Arrancar, Nell Tu.
When Orihime sees Ichigo's hollow transformation for the first time, she's shocked and scared because she can't sense Ichigo the same way. She wonders why she can no longer see her reflection in his eyes. The battle goes badly for Ichigo until Nell finally yells at Orihime to cheer for him; because he can see she's afraid, it's distracting him from the battle. The words come before she can think about them and she trails off at the end, half-scared that she would end up saying all of the wrong things, or that she might not cause a difference at all. If she was like Rukia –
But her support seems to be enough for Ichigo. It restores his spirit and he renews his assault on Grimmjow because, as he says, he isn't allowed to lose now.
At the end of the battle, Ichigo lets Grimmjow live and tells him he should continue getting stronger so they can fight again. Orihime is glad that, even though he's hurt, it looks like things will be alright…
Personality
Orihime is usually cheerful, empathetic and kind to those around her. She has a very odd way of looking at the world; her ideas can be as striking as they are bizzare, but more often than not they're just plain bizzare. Orihime wants one thing out of her life: happiness. She doesn't want the people around her to suffer at all if she can help it. Because of that, she tends to neglect her own needs and feelings. She's willing to let go of just about any fau pas. She simply brushes it off, saying she has a hard head or a strong constitution or what have you because she doesn’t want people to worry over her or get upset. It's not really a big deal to her anyway.
Orihime is always a little afraid that she's just a burden to her friends. She knows what she gets from it, but she doesn’t really see what they get from her. She's not a fighter and she knows it. In contrast to most of her friends, Orihime hates violence. Maybe this is a result of what happened with her parents but it's also an integral part of the way she thinks. She's a complete pacifist. She doesn’t want to hurt others to further her own ideals, even if they're hurting her. As long as the person isn't trying to hurt her friends, she will heal them without hesitance because she doesn't see a need for pointless suffering, even in her enemies.
She's extremely sensitive to Ichigo especially. She's able to tell when he has the slightest change in mood, when his spirit is troubled or happy, sometimes even before he's aware of it himself. Orihime wants Ichigo to be happy, even if she thinks that happiness might be with Rukia. She's jealous and sad that she'll never measure up in comparison, but she's also glad to know that Ichigo needs her too, so she'll do whatever she can to help him. (Except confess. Hopeless crush is hopeless.) She likes Rukia a lot and values their friendship despite her own feelings for Ichigo.
Orihime has changed a bit since entering Hueco Mundo. After her goodbye she doesn't expect the others to come for her since she would be, as Ulquiorra put it, a traitor. After all of the time nearly isolated in the hollow world she's happy that they would still come for her. For that, some part of her knows that these friends will always be with her, and Orihime is starting to find her strength and self-worth in that.
She smacks Ulquiorra for telling her to stop believing in her nakama. She decides that if she can't fight, she'll do what she can in this war and destroy the Hougyoku. The others have done everything they can for her at this point, and now she has to prove to herself that she's not just a burden. She can do something for the people that mean so much to her.
At Landel's
[Coming soon]
Powers
Orihime's Shun Shun Rikka are six little creatures that resemble fairies, each named after a flower. They reside in her hairclips when they are inactive and have the ability to heal, attack or defend depending on the combination she uses.
Defense: Santen Kesshun. Hinagiku, Lily, and Baigon form a triangle that rejects anything on the outside (as opposed to simply withstanding force). Rejection is this is the basis for all of Orihime's techniques.
At Landel's: ...the shield lasts for about a minute or two if she really pushes it. About half her height at the largest, and the amount of time it can stay will go down depending on how hard it's hit (assuming it would take more energy to reject harder hits or elemental attacks).
Attack: Koten Zanshun. Tsubaki creates a thin barrier on either side of him, and flies at the enemy. This is much like Orihime's defense technique, with the barriers manipulated so they can be used to cut. Because they reject everything on the outside of them, theoretically Tsubaki would be able to cut through anything. He's weak against counterattacks.
At Landel's: Her attack is pathetically ineffective. Like hitting things with a wet rag. Not really much of anything unless she really, really has to protect someone, in which case it might do some damage to larger monsters like leftovers or spiders but definitely not enough to kill anything.
Healing: Sōten Kisshun. Shun'ō and Ayame form a half-oval around the target. As stated earlier, Orihime's power isn't 'healing'. Her real power is rejection: she can reject negative events or injury like a reversal in time. Because of this, Orihime can even restore severed limbs or missing chunks of flesh without so much as a scratch remaining. This technique works on both people and objects. The healing time depends on the extent of the damage and is made more difficult if foreign spiritual pressure is present.
At Landel's: She has a bit more healing ability than the other shinigami in Landel's, maybe enough to close up deeper wounds, but she's unable to cover the whole body. She can heal small areas only, roughly the length of a forearm and half that width if she wants to use it with any effectiveness. The larger the area, the less effective it will be and the faster it will drain her.
All of these techniques have equal potential but Orihime's power is only as strong as her conviction. She also has strong spiritual senses, similar to empathy especially when it comes to sensing Ichigo's moods and feelings. Orihime can use her power about three times a night, and she must rest in between uses or she'll pass out. And if it wasn't obvious already: she still has her hair clips.
For Psychics
Orihime has no mental defenses whatsoever, so feel free to find whatever information you want. Her history's pretty detailed, I think. If there's anything you need to confirm/ask/reference quickly feel free to IM me at Zexified or e-mail me.
