King of Fighters

World
The setting of King of Fighters takes place on what is roughly equivalent to Earth. The games compass an entire span from 1994 all the way until 2006, with every year in between having its own game and tournament.

The world is similar to Earth, but with some remarkable differences that make it a world all its own. Technological conveniences like cell phones, the Internet, and Ginsu steak knives are all represented and widely acknowledged, but some fields of study are vastly superior to our own Earth. Notable examples include the mastery of cloning, sophisticated weaponry, advanced cybernetics, and the like.

The other notable difference is the common-place acceptance of the supernatural. Even mediocre combatants can utilize the power of 'ki', magic is not an impossibility, and no one bats an eye when a necromancer summons the spirits of the dead to attack his opponents. Gods and aliens and demons, while unknown to the common people, are still in existence and still exert a tremendous amount of influence over the mortal world.

"King of Fighters," the namesake of the series, is a fighting tournament which takes place once per year, and is also the time when those factions attempt to complete their various schemes. To date, not one tournament has concluded without some megalomaniacal villain attempt to either rule or destroy the world... or sometimes both, just to be different. Despite (or because of) this fact, the tournament remains the most popular and widely-televised event in the world, and thousands still pack the stands every year despite the almost certain probability of the arena being destroyed by the end of the event.

Culture
National tensions in the world are roughly equivalent to what they are in our world, save perhaps a bit more prone to exploding. Weapons of insanely destructive force are much more common, and with the additional power of ki-using fighters, war erupts quite frequently and with devastating results.

But life goes on. Children still go to school, jobs are held and lost as always, and even space aliens like a hot cup of Vienese coffee as much as the next person. Despite the annual threat of world annihilation, the world keeps enjoying its TV and its Internet as much as ever, with most people remaining blissfully ignorant of the many twists and turns that accompany every King of Fighters tournament.

The major difference in culture is the aforementioned supernatural. The plans of Orochi, an eight-headed serpent and a deity of unbelievable evil, seem to have King of Fighters wrapped in its coils even when the other factions attempt to usurp that deity's power. Orochi's descendants, cursed or blessed with his dark power, are always a major factor in the tournaments and most share his dream of destroying the world and replacing it with a utopia free of humanity. More recently, the demons of 'His Ancient Land' have begun manipulating the strings: four such demons have been revealed, and at the end of King of Fighters 11 and with the death of Magaki, the world was left wondering what fate would be awaiting them the following year.

Powers
Almost every fighter in this world can utilize 'ki'; the body's own energy and a devastating tool in the right hands. In the hands of a master, ki can level entire forests or out-power the blast of an orbital ion cannon. It is that same power which allows fighters to take bullets and knife-stabs, to say nothing of the more powerful blows, in the tournament with rarely any permanent damage being done.

Magic is also a common ability: everything from the Shiranui Ninja Arts to the Jin Brothers and their invocation of Chinese spirits and the necromancy of the Hizoku, and everything in between, are considered exceptional but not mind-boggling.

More rare is the power of bloodlines. The line of Kusanagi, for example, wield spiritual flames which incinerate evil (and a great deal of other things, as well) and can not be duplicated without the bloodline. The other line is that of Orochi; the deity's power enabling his children to control the elements, shrug off blows that would kill lesser mortals, and utilize magic far beyond their normal limits.
