Backstory
Born in Yokohama, Yohji is the son of a fairly average salaryman and his English wife. His parents were a normal couple and did what they could to give him a good childhood and provide for him. He had a fairly unremarkable childhood, attending a nursery school and then primary school in Yokohama. Despite a few bouts of bullying due to his European features, he seemed perfectly normal and well adjusted. He quickly learned English as well as Japanese due to frequent visits to England to visit his mother’s family.
When he was eight, strains in his parents marriage began to make themselves known through brief but vicious arguments and his father beginning to stay even later at work than usual. As the arguments increased in frequency, Yohji’s schoolwork began to suffer and he began to act up, pushing the limits of the rigid Japanese school system. As he grew older, he started to rebel in subtler ways, making the most of his unusual appearance and learning to use it to his advantage with girls.
When Yohji was sixteen, his parents finally divorced. Frustrated and upset by the custody battle that ensued, he ran away from home and dropped out of high school. He stayed with friends for a few weeks, working odd jobs to earn money. When he had enough, adding in money from various trust funds set up for him, he moved to a dingy apartment in Tokyo. He quickly fell in with a bad crowd, getting involved in petty crime and gangs. A prostitute named Michiko took him in, allowing him to stay at her apartment and encouraging him to get back on the right path.
However, after seeing her return to the apartment several times with cuts and bruises on her, he refused to allow her to go out again, insisting that she take him along for protection. Despite his best intentions, this quickly grew out of hand and he ended up working as a pimp for a while, connected to a gang.
He also bought himself a car, the Super 7 pimpmobile.
It was when Michiko was killed that he met Asuka, a young Private Investigator who had been following a man who murdered prostitutes. Desperate to find his friend's killer, Yohji joined up with the older woman, proving himself a capable partner.
After the man was caught and handed over to the police, Asuka offered Yohji a job in order to keep him away from the life he had been leading. Grateful to her, Yohji readily accepted and worked hard to get his PI's licence.
He worked with Asuka until he was about 21 and over that time, fell in love with her although they never actually became a couple. While investigating a prostitution ring called Riot who had been kidnapping and murdering women, Yohji was shot and unable to continue running. They made it to an alleyway and then Yohji begged Asuka to leave him and escape. Grudgingly she did so, only to be shot in front of Yohji.
He lost consciousness and woke up in a hospital where he met Manx, an agent for a group called Kritiker, who offered him the chance to get revenge on Asuka’s killers. Yohji agreed and when he was recovered enough, he was placed with a Kritiker training team who taught him how to use the wire as a weapon.
After about nine months, Yohji was placed with the lethal team Weiss, then consisting of Omi Tsukiyono and Ken Hidaka. A few months later, Aya Fujimiya also joined the team. Together they fought and assassinated many threats to the people of Tokyo while dealing with their own personal demons. While working in a flower shop. Called the Koneko no Sumu Iie (Kitten in the House). They had cat codenames too!
While investigating a dollmaker who used the skins of young girls for his dolls, a girl named Sayaka with a crush on Yohji was kidnapped right in front of him and Yohji was shot in the leg trying to save her. Despite this wound, Yohji still went with the rest of Weiss to complete the mission. Unfortunately, by the time they got there, Sayaka had already been killed and skinned.
Yohji’s revenge for Asuka’s death came with the order to investigate Riot. Yohji infiltrated their luxurious resort, intending to find a copy of the schedule of the company President. While there, he rescued a young girl called Maki who had attamepted to escape from Riot’s clutches. After getting the schedule, he and Maki fled the building but were pursued and Yohji was shot and unable to continue running. He and Maki hid in an alleyway and Maki managed to call Omi, telling him to come pick them up. With Riot’s guards closing in on them, Yohji begged Maki to run so that she could escape. She did but was quickly captured once again.
Despite his injury, Yohji refused to be left out of the mission to destroy Riot and accompanied the rest of Weiss. He killed the President of the company, but found that Maki had already been murdered.
Several months later, Weiss were investigating Masafumi Takatori, Weiss came up against the female assassin team known as Schreint who acted as Masafumi’s bodyguards. While fighting them, Yohji managed to break the mask of one of the members, Neu, revealing that she looked eerily similar to Asuka.
While this shocked him, they still completed the mission and continued with their work, taking down Reiji Takatori who was working with Schwartz and Esstet to become Japan’s Prime Minister.
Over the next few weeks, a smear campaign began, blaming Weiss for terrorist attacks on innocent people. While Aya deserted the rest of Weiss, intending to attack Takatori as he travelled, Weiss were lured into a trap and then attacked by Japanese Security forces sent by Takatori. Yohji was short and badly injured while trying to escape.
Thankfully, Aya returned along with Manx and Persia and rescued the rest of Weiss. They returned to the flower shop to lick their wounds before making a final assault on Takatori. Despite the city being placed under martial law, Weiss manage to make it to the building where Takatori was and past his guards. Despite the death of Persia, they manage to catch up with Takatori on the roof of the building and Aya kills him, avenging his family.
After this mission, Weiss disbanded and attempted to get on with their lives, free of killing.
It was not to be. While Yohji was on hiatus, he saw Asuka’s face everywhere and in every woman he slept with. One whom he picked, Kyoko, turned out to be Neu of Schreint and attempted to kill him by strangling him with his own wire. He was saved only by the intervention of Botan, a Kritiker agent.
He returned to Tokyo and the Koneko, only to find the rest of Weiss had also gathered. All had been attacked and Aya’s sister, Aya-chan, had been kidnapped by Schreint. Weiss reformed with their first mission being to rescue kidnapped girls from a cult.
After more battles with Schreint, Neu feigned amnesia in order to infiltrate Weiss. Yohji, truly believing her to be Asuka (it’s never totally confirmed), was easily manipulated because of his emotions. After gathering enough information, Neu betrayed him and forced a confrontation, during which Yohji was forced to kill her, leaving him deeply scarred.
After the death of Neu, Schreint set a trap for Weiss, luring them to their hideout. While the others entered the mansion, Yohji remained on guard outside, and spied on a sweet meeting between Nagi of Scwartz and Tot of Schreint. The fight was rather... non existent, since Omi and Ken fell through the floor and were incapacitated. Schreint were taken out by Schwartz who then kidnapped Aya’s sister for their own nefarious ends. After Tot was stabbed however, Nagi lost control of his telekinetic powers and levelled the building, with Weiss barely able to escape. After the event, Yohji found Tot and Nagi beneath the rubble and, believing them both dead, placed their hands together.
Not long after, and with Kritiker agents being killed at an alarming rate, Weiss took on their final mission; stopping the evil organisation Esstet from resurrecting a demon in Aya-chan's body. The four of them headed to the temple where the ritual was to take place. Despite the huge number of people standing against them, they managed to fight their way to Aya-chan’s side and kill two of the Esstet Elders, despite their strong psychic powers.
However, the girl they had believed to be Aya-chan, turned out to be Sakura, a friend of Aya's while Aya-chan had been taken by Schwartz to fulfil their own plans. Weiss finally caught up to Schwartz. The battle went badly until Manx showed up, giving them a short break in which Aya-chan and Sakura were able to escape. Schwartz and Weiss continued to fight until the building collapsed around them, plunging them into Tokyo Bay.
With the Koneko destroyed and Kritiker in ruins, Weiss were sent out to travel across Japan in a mobile flower shop, taking on missions in whatever area they were passing through.
With the deaths of several young people at the hands of American soldiers, and with the police unable to do anything (due to the deaths taking place on American military bases which count as US territory), Weiss were called in by Manx . Omi and Ken sided with a young hacker and her brother, who determined to get revenge on the Americans for the death of their parents, had committed illegal acts, while Aya and Yohji accepted the mission to kill them for their crimes. Unfortunately, this also meant killing Omi and Ken for going against Kritiker. After the death of their targets, Yohji and Aya faced off against Ken and Omi in a fight to the death which left only Ken alive.
The whole sequence of events was shown to be a Kritiker plot designed to mislead the Americans involved and Weiss destroyed the true targets, rescuing the captured manx in the process. Although Ken seemed a little... odd.
Still travelling Japan, the events of Yohji's past finally began to take their toll on his sanity and he found that he saw Asuka in every face. It also led to him trying to strangle any woman he slept with, seeing them as Neu instead of who they really were. After one such incident, he wandered into a bar run by two men called Ayame and Azami who consoled him about his 'woman troubles' and Yohji quickly began to consider them friends.
Another mission, but this one was interrupted by a mysterious group who also claimed the name 'Weiss' and who managed to defeat the real Weiss as well as the targets.
While out with Ken in Kanazawa, Yohji again ran into Ayame and Azami and the four of them went drinking together, where Ayame joked about Yohji being Azami's lover and explained how he and Azami became friends.
Meanwhile, Omi had visited the house of his grandfather to investigate disappearances of young girls and discovered the preserved body of Ouka his cousin.Realising that the missing girls had been killed and turned into dolls, Weiss entered the house, intending to kill as Omi's grandfather as per their orders, however they were attacked by chain-whip wielding twins who were about to kill them until the intervention of Rindou, one of the members of the false Weiss. They managed to destroy the man who had made the dolls but Omi took charge, forbidding them from killing his grandfather.
Yohji visited Ayame again and the two of them went to a bar together where Yohji got completely drunk and woke up in bed with a prostitute who he slept with and then accidentally killed.
Manx visited Weiss and shed some light on the situation and the false Weiss, revealing that Ayame and Azami were members of the group and had kidnapped Birman. The revelation left Yohji feeling bitter and betrayed and not entirely sane over the issue, beginning the downward spiral into Gluhen territory. Manx gave them the order to kill Birman to protect Kritiker and then died due to injuries caused by the false Weiss.
Weiss entered the warehouse where Birman was being tortured and confronted the false Weiss. Although they attempted to rescue Birman, she killed herself, knowing that she would be a burden and unlikely to survive.
Weiss split up, leaving Yohji and Ken to attempt to escape into the forest. Near a shrine, they ran into Ayame and Azami again, discovering their grizzly secret; Ayame killed women for pleasure and Azami, deeply in love with him, disposed of the bodies. Ayame also revealed that he had been the one to kill the prostitute Yohji had slept with and that he had seen that Yohji desired to kill women and had wanted to help him take the final step to 'become free'. The two of them also revealed that they had been members of the original Weiss team, doing the same job as Yohji and that over time, they had come to enjoy killing instead of reviling themselves for it.
Yohji and Ken fought the two of them, and eventually managed to kill them (after an appropriately long dying soliloquy in which they revealed that Ayame had actually been born a woman and that Azami was in love with him and Ayame loved Azami too and it would all be ridiculously sappy if they weren't psychotic murderers who had tried to kill Weiss) but the killing left Yohji depressed since they had been his friends. He couldn't help seeing Ken's point that it was relieving to know that they had so much further to fall, to become true killers and be killed in turn, even though the idea made him feel sick.
A few days later, Weiss were given their 'final' mission; to destroy the remnants of the previous Weiss and then take on normal lives. They agreed to the mission, knowing that none of them could ever live a normal life again.
Omi disappeared and returned to his grandfather and killed Rindou, while Yohji, Ken and Aya went to hunt down Shion, the final member of the false Weiss and the man who had taught Aya to use a sword when he first joined Kritiker.
The search led them to an island where Aya confronted Shion in a deadly duel. While this took place, Yohji and Ken attempted to kill Shion while he was distracted, but the man proved too good and left Yohji badly injured after his attack. Aya then challenged Shion to a one-on-one fight which he won using the dirty tactic of shooting him!
With the completion of this mission and Omi taking up the mantle of Persia to become Mamoru Takatori, Yohji was left alone to pick up the pieces of his life, abusing himself with alcohol and other things, often seeing doctors and being in and out of hospitals. He started living with a young woman named Kimika, although they had an open relationship. Yohji was desperately trying to 'reset' himself, start over, but kept being dragged back, unable to forget the past.
A group of drug runners visited his apartment, demanding to know where Kimika was since she apparently was selling drugs for them but pocketing the money. They beat Yohji up badly since he had little will to bother fighting them, but before they could kill him, he was saved by the intervention of Ken.
Ken had been trying to find him for a while and had eventually been led to the apartment. The two talked, Ken asking if Yohji wished to come with Ken and rejoin Weiss as a killer. Yohji refused, claiming that he'd managed to forget his life, causing Ken to punch him and starting an argument.
A few days later a group of Yakuza shot Kimika and she died in Yohji's arms leaving him arguing with himself and telling himself that living without being able to love is the punishment for his sin.
After Kimika's death, Yohji snuck into the Yakuza office and killed them all before taking the drugs that Kimika had left behind. He woke up in a bar with Aya and made the decision to rejoin Weiss, since there were so many people who need killing and he no longer minded it. At this point, he began having hallucinations of Asuka and often talked to them.
After rejoining Weiss, Yohji, along with Ken, was sent on a mission to a school in Europe which was believed to be a front for Esstet. While there, posing as a teacher, he seduced a teacher named Michelle in order to gather knowledge about the school and Esstet. Unable to control his emotions, he fell in love with her, but when the time came to destroy the school, he was forced to kill her since she was an Esstet agent.
He returned to Japan and entered Koua Academy, once again posing as a teacher. There, he came in contact with Tsuji Mayumi, an Esstet agent who he was ordered to get information from. He seduced and slept with her, but once again tried to strangle her. Unfortunately he failed, but the guilt still ate at him and when he was given the order to kill her, she used her knowledge of him to throw him off guard. She offered him a choice; he could have all of his painful memories erased if he would work for Esstet. Her manipulation worked and Yohji agreed, blinded by pain and guilt to see the utter stupidity of his actions and the fact that Tsuji was an evil manipulative bitch.
The order was given for Weiss' final mission (again) but before they could head into the building to complete the mission, Yohji turned on Aya, wrapping his wire around the other man's throat. While the other members of Weiss went ahead with the mission, Aya stayed behind to fight him. He goaded Yohji into examining his actions and defeated him since Yohji was unable to kill his friend.
While Aya took off into the building, Yohji followed and had a conversation with his Asuka hallucination, who told him that she still loved him but that he had to let go of the past. He finally got to say goodbye and with that, came to the realisation that Weiss were his friends, his family, and he couldn't betray them.
He faced off with Tsuji who managed to beat him fairly badly before Aya arrived. Aya lent Yohji his katana and Yohji managed to kill the bitch just as the building started collapsing. Knowing that his friends would probably die if they tried to save him, he told them to leave him and promised to return to them and bring back Aya's sword.
The building collapsed around him (thanks to Crashers and their terrible timing with explosives) and he woke up in a room at Landels.
Personality
While outwardly, Yohji can appear charming and friendly, a playboy with a love of women, drinking and tobacco, it doesn't take much to see beneath the shell. In reality, Yohji is far more vulnerable and unsure. He suffers from very serious depression and the guilt of his past weighs heavily on him, even years after the events. The killings that he has committed and the blame he places on himself for the deaths of several women who he loved have made him hate himself, a situation that is not helped by his habit of strangling women when he sleeps with them. He sees himself as nothing more than a killer; he's been doing it for so long that he's become desensitised to it and it rarely affects him any more. He's more disturbed by the fact that he isn't worried by it any more.
At the same time, he is also slightly resentful of his friends who seem to have coped so well. Even Ken, although he started killing for pleasure, is at least happy, and Yohji can't help but wish he could do the same. Although he is unlikely to try to commit suicide directly, his drinking, smoking, and Aya-baiting suggest that he's searching for death indirectly. He has a definite cynical edge and can be quite scathing and sarcastic when he feels the need.
He tends to trust too easily and when he falls in love with someone, he falls hard and fast. Because of his deep feelings of guilt, he can be easy to manipulate if someone knows of his past. But if someone earns his enmity, there's little chance of changing his mind. He's very much a social creature and hates being isolated. Without other people to give him purpose, he tends to fall apart.
Despite the angst, Yohji is actually rather sweet and sensitive. He can be very protective of people he cares for, and will put himself at risk to keep them safe or avenge them. His friends are the thing that keep him going and give him purpose.
At Landel's
Cliff Fittir: Cliff was the person who explained Landel's to Yohji after his first night and stopped the assassin from having a minor breakdown. The two have grown quite close afte working together a few times and talking during the day, and Cliff is someone who manages to keep Yohji from falling apart. The two of them have pushed their relationship into an odd sort of middle ground after they kissed (fuelled by alcohol), and Cliff has offered to let Yohji go back to his world with him if they get out of Landel's. However, Cliff's disappearance has led to Yohji coming very close to breaking once again, sending him right back into a pit of depression.
Schuldig: Yohji is rather wary of the Schwartz assassin, but maybe not as suspicious as he would normally be. The two of them get along oddly well now that they don't have to try to kill each other, and Yohji has even loosened up around him enough to sleep with him and to enjoy spending time with him beyond that. Schuldig also stopped Yohji from breaking completely after he began hallucinating again.
