Loveless
World
In most aspects, the Loveless world is exactly like contemporary Japan.
Culture
The most significant difference between the real world and the Loveless world is the addition of cat ears and tails to every person on the planet. All people are born with these feline features that serve as a mark of one's virginity. When someone loses their virginity, they lose or "drop" their ears and tail, entering the adult world. After a certain age, most people are expected to lose their ears, and those of an appropriately "adult" age who still retain their ears are often teased. An example is the 23 year old Shinonome Hitomi, who still has her ears despite being old enough to marry.
Powers
The other distinguishing feature of the Loveless world is the existence of people called Fighters and Sacrifices. This is a secret society of people who control words and use them to fight with one another in bouts called spell battles. People who have the ability to participate in this society are broken into two parts - the Fighter, capable of using spells and dealing damage, and the Sacrifice, the one who takes damage for the Fighter in the battle. These Fighters and Sacrifices are paired on the basis of sharing a "true name," or a name marked somewhere on their body. There is only ever one other person who shares your true name, and your name is given to you before you are born.
