Backstory
Matsumoto died young, probably only four or five years old, and was sent to Soul Society, ending up in one of the lower sections of Rukongai where she scraped a living through theft and scavenging since she had no family or friends to help. Normally, the souls in Rukongai do not require food, but since Matsumoto had spiritual power, she could not survive on water alone and began to starve. While searching for food, she collapsed from hunger and would have died if not for the intervention of young boy named Ichimaru Gin who shared his food with her and saved her life. the two stayed together, with Gin giving her a birthday date of September 29th, the day the two of them met meaning Matsumoto wasn't alone any longer.

The two of them travelled together for several years, working to find food to sustain them. As she grew into adulthood, with the consideration that he showed her, it was easy for Matsumoto to fall in love with him.

Eventually, Gin disappeared, leaving Matsumoto behind in Rukongai. Annoyed at him leaving her, she decided to become a shinigami too and several years later entered the Academy.

She quickly adjusted to Academy life, making friends with her carefree attitude and good looks. She did well in her studies and was accepted into the 8th Division upon graduation where she became drinking buddies with Captain Kyouraku and friends with Nanao Ise despite their differences. Now a shinigami, she once again met with Gin, although with his promotion to Captain of the 3rd division, their time together was still low and although Matsumoto still had feelings for him, they slowly began to drift apart.

Several years later, Matsumoto was promoted to become vice-captain of the 10th division, a position she still maintains. After the captain of the 10th division retired, he was replaced with Hitsugaya Toushirou, an extremely young prodigy and the youngest person to become a captain ever. Matsumoto was rather annoyed to have to answer to a kid at first, but she soon saw his capability and grew to respect him and also become rather fond of him; enjoying teasing and flirting innocently with him whenever she got the chance, as well as frequently hugging him and burying his face into her breasts.

With the invasion of Soul Society by Ichigo and his friends, all of Seireitei was placed on high alert and this was only exacerbated with the apparent death of the 5th division Captain, Aizen Sosuke. His body was found hung from the side of a tower, apparently impaled by a blade.
Suspicion immediately fell upon Ichimaru Gin, due to the nature of his zanpakuto and an earlier conversation overheard by Hitsugaya. Aizen's vice-captain, Hinamori Momo, attempted to attack Gin, only to be geld off by Gin's vice-captain, Kira Izuru. The fight was stopped by the arrival of Hitsugaya who placed Hinamori and Kira under arrest, ordering Matsumoto to escort her to the cells. A few days later, with the 10th division having taken responsibility for the 5th division's paperwork, Matsumoto delivered Hinamori a letter written by Aizen before his death.

Later that day, the news came that both Hinamori and Kira had escaped from prison and fearing the worst, Hitsugaya went to confront Gin. Their confrontation was interrupted by Hinamori who then attacked Hitsugaya, claiming that he had been the one to kill Aizen. He knocked her out and then attacked Gin, almost incapacitating him. However, Gin's sword had the ability to extend and he used that to attack the unconscious Hinamori. Matsumoto arrived at that moment and blocked Gin's attack using her own Zanpakuto. After telling Gin that he would have to fight her if he continued, he turned and walked away.

With Gin's betrayal and the news that Kuchiki Rukia's execution had been moved forward, Hitsugaya and Matusmoto decided that the only course of action was to prevent the execution and thus, stop Gin's plans. Following Hitsugaya, Matsumoto headed to the Central 46, the government body of Soul Society. However, when they got there, they found that although the protections around the room were still in place, every member had been murdered several days ago.

They were interrupted by Kira who led them away from the chamber, forcing them to chase him throughout Seireitei. He revealed that they had been followed by Hinamori, and Hitsugaya left to find her, leaving Matsumoto to fight Kira. Concerned about the apparent change in Kira, she demanded to know what Gin had done to him, understanding his cruelty, even though she loved him. Kira released his zanpakuto and attacked her relentlessly, revealing that his sword continually doubled the weight of everything that it struck. Unable to continue fighting with her sword weighing so much, she released it. Her zanpakuto turned into the ash of it's initial release and she was able to defeat Kira.

With Kira defeated, a message arrive from the vice-captain of the 4th division explaining that Aizen was truly the traitor, had murdered the Central 46 and was now planning to kill Kuchiki Rukia. Leaving Kira, she headed off to the execution ground with the other captains and vice-captains to confront the traitors.

She arrived quickly and managed to capture Gin, proving her loyalty to Soul Society by holding her sword to his throat, while the other traitors were similarly captured. However, despite the presence of so many powerful shinigami, they were unable to prevent the escape of Aizen, Gin and Tousen. Powerful hollows broke into Soul Society and took the traitors away; containing them in beams which separated them from Soul Society and took them to the Hollow world. Forced to let go of Gin, Matsumoto could only watch in horror as he escaped, his parting words to her implying that he still had feelings for her; 'I would've liked to have been held a little longer', followed by an apology.

Following their escape, Soul Society began the process of recovering and rebuilding. Matsumoto maintained the 10th division until Hitsugaya's recovery. She grew slightly morose and depressed due to Gin's betrayal, frustrated at not understanding him enough to prevent his actions. She spent some time getting to know Ichigo and his friends during this time too, during the process of gathering information and while visiting the 4th division to see her captain.

Despite this, she quickly forgave Kira Izuru when he came to visit her. The two spent that day getting drunk and cheerfully cursing Gin for betraying them both (although Kira was no match for Matsumoto's drinking skills). They were later joined by Hisagi Shuuhei (although Ichigo and Orihime declined the offer) and eventually passed out dead drunk.

She woke up in an unfamiliar room in Landel's Institute.

Personality
Matsumoto generally comes across as cheerful, lazy and occasionally obnoxious. She spends a lot of time shirking her duties (mainly paperwork) to go drinking or sleep on the sofa in the 10th division HQ. She is not particularly refined or ladylike and is very fun loving and easy-going, enjoying drinking and becoming rather rowdy during her drinking sessions; often managing to out drink her male companions and causing them much embarrassment. She has little modesty; having no qualms about showing off her breasts or teasing people with her looks, especially Hitsugaya who just finds it embarrassing and annoying. However, if anyone oversteps their bounds with her, she would have no problems with teaching them lesson. Despite her looks and her teasing, she isn't easy and she takes her reputation as vice-captain very seriously.

Despite her care-free and lazy attitude, she is actually very capable and smart, being good at tactics and planning when she has to be. She rarely loses her composure, especially in difficult situations and when the situation requires it, she tends to act in a serious manner. She has great loyalty to those who have earned it, such as Hitsugaya, even to the extent of risking her life and fighting against people she cares deeply about (such as Gin) to protect them. She is sensitive to the feelings of others and tries to help and support people subtly. She tends to forgive easily when she sees true repentance, and doesn't often hold grudges. However, she can also be extremely stubborn; when she wants something, she is unlikely to take 'no' for an answer.

Rangiku also has a definite motherly streak in her; she is very protective of those she 'adopts' and will try to help them in whatever ways she can.

In private, she is often rather thoughtful, pondering past regrets and mistakes and wondering how things would have turned out otherwise. However, it takes a lot for her to become depressed, and even then it never lasts long, especially if remedied by good friends and good booze.

In Landel's
Rangiku woke at the start of Day 22 with a hangover. Quickly realising that this obviously wasn't where she was supposed to be, she bullied Reno into telling her what was going on, and met up with Ichigo who gave her some more detailed information.

During brunch, she found Renji drugged after a fight with Ichimaru Gin. Hearing that Gin was present in Landel's, she couldn't help but go and find him. Even though what he said renewed her trust in him a little, she still felt no qualms about kneeing him in the groin. She wasn't entirely displeased when he retaliated with a kiss.
