Backstory
SPOILERS FOR ARLONG ARC, LOL.
Nami was born eighteen years ago in a village now ransacked by war. The Marine recruit Bellemere, who was on the verge of death, picked her up as an infant from a bloody battlefield, along with another, older girl named Nojiko. Nami and Nojiko became Bellemere's adopted children, and they settled down in Cocoyashi Village.

Bellemere, a sexy, busty, cigarette-smoking “bad girl,” was a loving foster mother to her two girls, and all together they ran a small mikan orchard. (Mikan is a small citrus fruit with loose skin, somewhat akin to the tangerine and often called satsuma. They traditionally symbolize wealth.) The family didn't always have very much money – in fact, they were often the poorest in the village. They barely made ends meet, though, and ate many mikan-derived meals when times were hard. Nami was a precocious child, and spent her time reading books and making maps.

One day in the library, when Nami was ten years old, she folded up her map only to decide that she wanted to take a specific book on navigation home, and slipped it under her dress to steal it. She was caught, though, and was angrily dragged home by the village chief of sorts, Gen, who always wore a pinwheel on his head. Bellemere calmed Gen down, but scolded Nami for stealing things.

At this time Nami's dream became apparent – she wanted to sail around the world, and then make a world map of all the places she'd seen.
That night, around the table, Nami and Nojiko noticed Bellemere wasn't eating. The busty Marine called it a diet – the two girls knew better. They were out of money.

Bellemere finished mending an old shift of Nojiko's to give to Nami, but Nami grew angry and fell into a screaming match with Nojiko. She wanted clothes of her own; Nojiko told her that she was her younger sister, and therefore she got her hand-me-downs. Nami countered, saying the two weren't 'real sisters.' Bellemere wouldn't stand that, and hit Nami across the face. The three were family, as far as Bellemere was concerned.

Nami's pride was hurt, though, and she childishly yelled out that she wished she had been taken in by a rich family, and left, running out into the rainy afternoon. When it cleared up, she made it to Gen's house, where she learned the whole story of the near-death Bellemere picking the children up off the battlefield.

Then Nojiko showed up, and Nami, who had cheered up considerably, started running back with her, laughing and playing all the way -
- when, at that moment, the pirate Arlong showed up. He demanded a huge sum from each member of the village each month in order to survive, declaring Cocoyashi to be his domain now. It looked like he'd overlooked Bellemere's house until the last minute.
She couldn't pay for the three of them – she could pay for to cover either herself or her two children.

Arlong tortured Bellemere, mutilating her arm; Nami and Nojiko were still in the village at this time, being instructed to run away. The pirate accepted the beli that would pay for Bellemere's existence in the village, with no knowledge of the two children.

As they were walking away, Bellemere confessed that the money was for her daughters. She just couldn't deny that she didn't have a family.
Which meant that she couldn't pay. Nami and Nojiko ran toward her, crying and hugging her-

-the villagers ran to save Bellemere from the pirates-

“Nojiko, Nami – I love you-”

-and Arlong shot her in the chest, the children looking on. She died instantly.

Then, Arlong picked up the map Nami had drawn that day, and decided to take Nami into their pirate crew, with a deal that Arlong would free the village if she was able to raise 100,000,000 beli. (That's quite a lot.) And she decided that she would take this task upon herself; she would save the village herself. She didn't tell the village about the deal; nevertheless, they found out eventually anyway.

The next eight years were slavery for Nami, being forced to make maps under the guise of being Arlong's mapmaker. Her arm was marked with Arlong's tattoo. Her life was marked with Arlong's cruelty. Eight years of mapping East Blue until her hands blistered, secretly pilfering money from pirates and hiding it in the village where Arlong couldn't see.

Then she joined up with the Straw Hat Pirates, and our story begins.

Personality

Nami is, first and foremost, a sensible girl. She's truly pragmatic, and she honestly believes in doing the best thing for the common good, or at least the good of the people she cares about. That isn't to say that she's a martyr. While she did undertake seven years of Arlong-induced hell for the good of Cocoyashi Village, she values her life immensely and will do anything to stay alive for them and for her crew. The thought of dying in battle does not appeal to her. People need her – people have always needed her – and she knows that the crew would fall apart without her guidance.

She generally eschews silliness, preferring instead to concentrate on the task at hand instead of carrying on with the craziness of everyone in the party. However, she certainly knows how to have fun; it's just her preference to stay on task. When Serious Business happens, such as the situation on Skypiea, she tends to get a little grumpier. Stress makes her tend to snap at people. Generally, even though she does mean business most of the time, she's rather sunny and somewhat motherly to the crew.

In battle, she's a force to be reckoned with after she obtains the Clima Tact from Usopp. She doesn't actually have a serious one-on-one fight until Arabasta, but she does help out fighting throughout the series until then. Not having a special combat-related ability or a Devil's Fruit power, Nami is best suited for thinking situations, and the Clima Tact allows her that. Sometimes, though, Nami gets a little spazzy, most of the time when the crew's entering a ridiculously silly or needlessly dangerous situation.

Nami has said that the two things she values most (after her life) are money and mikan, or satsuma, which are a symbol of money. Though her goal of saving her village from the clutches of evil pirate fishmen has been completed, old habits die hard indeed. As a result, Nami's fiscally very smart and is the person to manage the crew's financial matters. She's also quite materialistic, and just plain loves stuff. She can bargain with the best of them.

Incidentally, she's known to charge her nakama exorbitant amounts for small services, going so far as to charge three times in interest, but never collects on their debts. Other people, though, are completely fair game.

Her pride is also very important to her. Just about the only time Nami blushes is when her pride's been compromised, and she'll refuse money if it means damaging her self-worth. She takes personal pleasure in her status as a pirate these days, and she knows her nakama depend on her to get them safely to the next island. She knows she's an expert navigator, and won't hesitate to remind her nakama of this after she's completed a particularly tricky feat of navigation, such as guiding the crew up the Knock Up Stream.

Nami is stated to be the third most intelligent person to appear in the East Blue series of arcs – the first two being Ben Beckman of Shanks' crew and Captain Kuro – and is among the smartest members of the Straw Hat crew, along with Chopper and Robin. She's tricked countless pirates out of their booty, so it's easily safe to say that she's skilled at manipulation. It's easy for her to take gentle advantage of Sanji's devotion to her, and, as such, calls him 'Sanji-kun.' She doesn't seem interested in his romantic advances in the least, however. She's not a romantic person in general, and is aware that her status prevents her from drawing close to anyone besides her nakama.

Her friendship with Princess Nefertari Vivi is the main exception to this, and illustrates how her money is not her life. Vivi definitely counts as a nakama and a member of the Straw Hat Pirates, but she's a princess, first and foremost. Vivi's mission and concern for her country does not leave Nami's thoughts, and Nami personally takes responsibility for Vivi's mission; perhaps it reminds her of her own resolve to save Cocoyashi Village from Arlong. Though arguably she's inspired by Vivi's money in the beginning of their travels, her leaving the promised money behind as they leave Arabasta is proof that her agreement with the princess at Whiskey Peak was more for Vivi herself than the money.

To other people who are not her nakama, she can lay on the charm as much as she feels is needed in order to get what she wants.
