Backstory

Japan was a place of political unrest. Power plays and war tore apart clans and brought the country bloody death. Some battles made their fields look like a scene straight out of hell. The Uesugi Clan was no different. After the death of Uesugi Kenshin his two adopted sons (Kagekatsu and Kagetora) began to fight for his position. Naoe’s clan was allied with Kagekatsu, pitting him in life against the man that would eventually become his master in death. The battles eventually took Kagetora’s life and Naoe died years after Kagekatsu took power.

In death, Naoe refused the reincarnation cycle, preferring instead to follow Kenshin’s orders. The deceased Lord had realized that the wars had left many vengeful and angry spirits roaming Japan and that the only way to truly end the fighting was to banish all those who remained behind. In order to do that Kenshin created the Uesugi Army, a five person force that would be headed by his adopted son, Kagetora. The five of them would possess bodies every generation, grow in these bodies (complete with memories of all of their past lives) and continue to banish and fight the vengeful spirits who existed.

At first Naoe was unsure about serving the man he had fought against, but Kagetora’s power was undeniable. Naoe began to become enthralled by the man, falling in love with his presence and his abilities. Kagetora, being the commander that he is, caught onto Naoe’s slowly developing emotions towards him and began using them against his follower. Thus began and painful and deadly game that lasted for several centuries. Naoe began to think of himself as Kagetora’s faithful dog, an analogy that Kagetora did nothing to dispel. He learned to both adore and despite the man and the way that he could give Naoe just enough to make him beg for more. The other souls in the army grew used to this game of theirs, even as it got really old and annoying. Naoe’s devotion was unquestionable, and something that Kagetora used in every way that he could. It became Naoe’s desire to dominate Kagetora and love him and possess him and fuck him and make love to him and kill him and a million other actions that are contradictory and saturated with the emotion that Naoe poured into his Lord.

Eventually the mind fucking got to be too much…

During Kagetora’s previous life the Lord developed a romantic relationship with a woman named Minako. Naoe seethed with jealousy towards this woman, and hatred towards Kagetora for putting him through this. After hundreds of years of complete devotion Kagetora was growing tired of his role as a possessor and in the army. There were even worries that he would quit in favor of being with Minako (but a lot of those were Naoe being paranoid). Finally the pain and jealousy got to be too much. Naoe cornered Minako, told her that her relationship with Kagetora could never equal the one he had and that in the long run she was meaningless. To prove how worthless she was he attacked and viciously raped her. He did it because of how much he hated Kagetora and how much he loved him. The rape resulted in Minako becoming pregnant with his child.

Minako did not tell Kagetora what happened between her and Naoe (after all this was thirty years ago in Japan). As she was dealing with this though, the Uesugi Army was confronted with a powerful enemy. An Absorption Spell guaranteed that they would be completely unable to use their powers. The fight resulted in Kagetora being seriously wounded, to the point where it wasn’t sure his soul would even survive. In desperation to save his Lord, Naoe took out Kagetora’s soul and forced it into the nearest available body, Minako. This did two things, it killed the woman that Kagetora had been in love with and it made him realize that Naoe had raped and impregnated her. The trauma of Naoe’s betrayal and Minako’s death forced Kagetora to seal his memories and wait until he moved to the next body.

Present day...

Tachibana Yoshiaki was born the third son his family on May 3. He grew up and went to college, where he excelled in subjects like history and eventually became a monk of Shingon-shu Buzan-ha at the Kougenji temple in Utsunomiya (given his affinity towards spiritual things this seemed to be a good choice for him). He is well known for helping people through serious spiritual problems as well for being a very kind and professional man. When he is not in his robes he wears a suit and big sunglasses he bought in the eighties. When he is not working he smokes. He is a seemingly normal man, except that the person named Tachibana Yoskiaki never really got a chance to be. He is Naoe’s current vessal.

After Tachibana turned 28 there was a mysterious vandalism at a grave. The tombstone had been broken and the soul of the warlord sealed inside released. Naoe, of course, had to investigate for fear that a vengeful spirit was on the loose and posed to possess a body. He noticed in the distance a woman and two teenaged boys. He could sense that something wasn’t right about this and rushed forward just as a crowd had gathered. The woman’s body burst into purification flames, purple flames that only a possessor should be able to see, despite this one of the teenagers was attempting to put out the flames. One look at him and Naoe knew who it really was. His Kagetora-sama had returned.

Naoe had more pressing things to take care of first, plus given what had happened during their previous incarnations Naoe wasn’t completely ready just to jump into Kagetora’s firing range. Takaya was the boy’s name and his best friend Yuzuru was slowly being possessed by the warlord that had been set free. Naoe went to Yuzuru and gave him a spiritual bracelet that would protect him so long as he kept it on. On his way back to his car he passed by Takaya, barely containing the emotion at being so close to Kagetora-sama. Takaya demanded to know what he was doing, but Naoe only paused before getting into his car and driving away.

Shortly afterwards Naoe confronted Takaya at his school. He used his telekinetic abilities to throw rocks that Takaya, injuring him slightly in the process. He asked the boy why he didn’t defend himself, and Takaya screamed at him to stop. He did, and then asked Takaya to come with him on a little trip. Knowing that Naoe could help his friend who had been suffering lately, Takaya came along. Naoe took him on a tour of the historical sites close by. He described the battles that took place in these places and the politics behind them. Takaya pointed out that Naoe spoke as if he had been there but seemed shocked with Naoe informed him that in fact he had. He also told Takaya that he was really Kagetora and that these history lessons were really all about his life. Takaya at first refused to believe it, claiming that Naoe must be mistaken, but Naoe was sure. He would never mistake Kagetora-sama, now or ever.

With Kagetora’s memories sealed Takaya was next to useless when it came to fighting. Sure he could punch and whack things with shovels, but when fighting a spiritual war spiritual powers are required. He needed to relearn a lot of his powers, but when it came down to saving Yuzuru’s life Takaya was able to banish the vengeful soul almost on instinct. Naoe was pleased. Perhaps now Takaya could accept the truth. He could do those things because he was Kagetora.

Now that Takaya had shown Kagetora’s powers, though, the Feudal Underground was aware of him once more. Naoe called Kakizaki Haruie (another of the possessors) to come to help him. He had been on Kagetora’s side 400 years ago and currently possessed the body of a female college student named Kadowaki Ayako. He and Haruie both tried to convince Takaya that he was indeed Kagetora and with him back the Uesugi Army could get back in business. Takaya was still unsure if he was going to believe Naoe and Haruie but then strange things started happening at his school.

There were several reports of hauntings and a boy named Chiaki Shuhei suddenly appeared claiming to be Takaya’s best friend (even more annoying to Takaya was that everyone else in his class also seemed to believe this ridiculous story). Naoe and Haruie realized that the spirits that were haunting the school were actually guardian spirits that had been hypnotized into believing they were vengeful spirits. It was against the rules of the Army for them to banish guardian spirits, but they also couldn’t allow the students to be in trouble. Takaya automatically assumed that Chiaki must have been responsible for the hauntings since he had clearly hypnotized everyone in class as well, but when he confronted Chiaki the other teen easily overpowered him, mocked him, and let him go (proving to not be a real threat).

Naoe and Haruie went to the school with Takaya to confront the spirits but when they were attacked they realized they could not use their powers. It was the same kind of spell that had been cast thirty years ago. Naoe jumped in front of the ghosts’ attacks to protect Takaya, and unable to create a barrier spell to protect himself, he was wounded by shards of glass. Their plight eventually found them trapped on the roof where they were confronted by the man who was controlling the souls. At the same time Chiaki and Yuzuru appeared. Chiaki had dispelled the Absorption Spell and Yuzuru just wanted to make sure his friend was okay. Chiaki also turned out to be the fourth member of the Uesugi Army, Yasuda Nagahide.

There was still a problem with the idea of banishing guardian spirits. They couldn’t really fight the ghosts and Yasuda, Haruie and Naoe turned to Takaya for orders. Kagetora was their leader, after all, and the one who usually would have come up with the plan of action. Takaya, however, was just a high school student and didn’t know what to do. Just went everything seemed lost the Army was shocked to see Yuzuru step forward. The teen became to glow with bright gold spiritual energy and he was able to talk to the spirits and return them to their original state.

Yuzuru’s show of power was shocking and worse yet it had been in front of the enemy (who would certainly attempt to use him in some future date). It was clear to Naoe that in order to protect his friend and become the leader of the Uesugi Army Takaya needed to spend some time training. He took the boy over his summer break and spent months traveling all over Japan helping him discover his powers. Those months were very hard for Naoe as he realized that uncovering Takaya’s powers meant that Takaya was getting closer to uncovering Kagetora’s memories. Then the boy began having nightmares about a woman named Minako. Naoe was forced to come face to face with his own guilt and his desire to have whatever body that Kagetora possessed. Despite the fact that Tachibana was about twelve years older than Takaya, Naoe wanted him, just as badly as he wanted Kagetora. For the most part Naoe was able to hide these feelings until one night in a hotel room.

Takaya could sense that something was wrong, but he couldn’t know what, then one night he woke from a nightmare. He asked Naoe if he had done anything to upset the older man, and then he pressed him with questions about Minako. Naoe couldn’t take it anymore, driven by his own lust and shame he grabbed Takaya’s wrists and pinned him to the wall. He started to tell Takaya all about how badly he wanted him and moved to kiss him, but just as things were going to get out of hand Takaya stopped struggling and gave in. This was something Kagetora would never do and the simple action reminded Naoe that he didn’t have a powerful warlord under him, but a scared teenaged boy. He pulled away from Takaya and received a hit in the face for his actions. Then Takaya disappeared.

Naoe had to continue with his life, after all Tachibana still had duties as a monk to do and being a possessor wasn’t something that paid the bills. A young woman came to him and told him about the accident her brother had been in. She was also plagued with visions of her brother in mirrors and in her dreams. He implored her to defeat the red beast. She was very distraught and took Naoe to her brother’s hospital room. The Possessor took one look at the boy in the bed and knew what the problem was. His soul had been removed from his body. If they didn’t find it soon the body would die as well.

His investigation of what had happened to the brother brought him in the middle of a plot by the Houjou clan, Kagetora’s birth family. By the time that Naoe had figured out what had been going on the Houjou Clan already had Takaya. They used one of the Tsutsuga Mirrors to trap Kagetora’s soul. These mirrors (one male and one female) could take the soul of anyone who looked into them, in addition they were used to create Tsutsuagas, red beasts that could devour a person’s soul by looking at them in the eyes (‘deafeat the red beast’). The Houjou were using these things to trap souls into key places throughout Japan, then, using Kagetora’s soul and Yuzuru’s spiritual energy they would unleash enough power to finally gain control of the Feudal Underground. However, they were unaware of Yuzuru’s true strength as using him in such a way would just as likely end the world.

Naoe went to the Houjou Clan and professed that he would join forces with them. They let him see Takaya’s body which was still alive despite not having Kagetora’s soul inside of it because of the protection the gods gave any vassal of Kagetora’s. As he stayed by the body Kagetora’s soul appeared to him and Naoe came face to face with his own torment at Kagetora’s hands. Naoe promised that he would kill the body to prove his new loyalty to the Houjou Clan. Instead he swallowed a bead with a god’s seal inside of it and spit it into Takaya’s mouth when he gave the body as farewell kiss before strangling him.

While this was going on Kagetora appeared to Chiaki and Haruie in mirrors to give them instructions on how to save Yuzuru and stop the Houjou plan from working. They were frantically trying to follow his orders while being unaware of Naoe’s actions.

The Houjou Clan was satisfied with Takaya’s death, but Naoe wasn’t finished. He took Takaya’s body out into the lake and after sealing the one of the Tsutsuga Mirrors hatched a devious plan. He would look into the mirror himself, so that his own soul would get trapped inside of it as well. Then he would cast Tachibana and Takaya into the lake, so that the two bodies, still protected by the gods, would rest in their watery prison forever as Kagetora and Naoe were trapped in the mirror. That way, Kagetora would be his forever, no one else would ever come near him and no matter how much he fought Naoe would always be there… for eternity... with no escape.

Just as he was about to do this, though, the head of the Houjou Clan (Kagetora’s birth father) appeared in the form of a dragon. He would allow Naoe to use the second Tsutsuga Mirror to set free Kagetora’s soul.

Naoe then had a choice… to finally have Kagetora forever, or to save Takaya’s life.

He chose to save Takaya.

With his soul back inside of its vassal Kagetora was able to take charge of the situation. He became the leader that the Uesugi Army had been waiting for. He was able to control the Tsutsuga because of the time he spent in the mirror. He turned the tables on the Houjou Clan, saved Yuzuru and stopped the plot to control the Feudal Underground.

Kagetora had one last showdown with his birth family before passing out by the lake. Naoe found Takaya’s unconscious body and took him to safety. After Takaya woke up he and Naoe were standing on the pier for the lake. Takaya asked Naoe why he had chosen to save him instead of just keeping them both in the mirror. Naoe confessed that as much as he wanted to have Kagetora, he also wanted to save Takaya. He had come to love Takaya as well as Kagetora. Then he gave Takaya his jacket and turned and left, saying that he needed to find out what the warlords were planning in the Feudal Underground, but also because it was too painful to stand and wait for Takaya to respond.

Personality

Naoe is usually a very calm and professional man. He’s cool under pressure and keeps an air of mystery about him. He tends to never really show what he is thinking or what he is feeling. This comes from hundreds of years of having to deal with Kagetora’s games. When it gets to be too much, he gives into bouts of severe violence or depression but they are always directly tied to his feelings towards Kagetora. He won’t, for instance, attack anyone unless they are an enemy or they don’t hold some meaning to him that are tied into Kagetora. He raped Minako only because of her relationship with Kagetora. The guilt from this action also is always on his mind. He is liable to get angry or uncomfortable if anyone brings it up. Those are the only two things that can get a rise out of him though (Kagetora and Minako) and they are really part of the same issue, his long standing hatred and love for Kagertora.

Naoe is a very good actor. He’s spent 400 years living numerous lives and he’s come to adapt to each of them. He has no problem getting up a façade or even lying if he has too. He’ll do what needs to be done to follow Kagetora’s orders or to get a job done. His cool, collected demeanor is also part of this façade. People hassle you less if they think you are generally a nice guy. This doesn’t mean that he’s a vindictive man; despite the cruel things he’s done he does have a sincere desire for forgiveness and for love. He usually picks professions where he can do good things for people and keep an eye on the Feudal Underground. He is also very patient, and can handle personalities even as strong as Takaya’s without so much as a sign of stress.

Naoe is obsessed with Kagetora but not necessarily gay. He actually prefers women sexually but his desire to posses Kagetora is a driving force for him since he died. Kagetora is always on his mind. He is unable to escape from the leash Kagetora has him by and in actuality he really doesn’t want to try and escape. As much as he hates being the dog begging for scraps at Kagetora’s heels he also loves it. The thought of one day having Kagetora is enough to make him stay by his master’s side. It is important to note that while Naoe confesses his love for Kagetora the emotions he has towards his master is cannot be summed up with such a positive word. What Naoe has for Kagetora is an infatuation that is also very intense hate, while his emotions of Takaya are slightly different. In his head he knows they are the same person, but without Kagetora’s memories Takaya makes Naoe feel a kind of perverted but more mild kind of affection.

At Landel's

Naoe woke up at Landel's and soon realized something was very wrong with his abilities. He was reunited with Takaya, who was less than thrilled to see him, and has since formed a mutual respect for Sasuke.
