Backstory

Naoya was born into a small, working class family living somewhere in Japan. His father was the owner of a toy shop while his mother remained at home to take care of Naoya and his brother. When he was two years old Naoya first began to show signs of possessing telepathic abilites when he spoke to his brother for the first time with his thoughts after an earthquake. Although he did not what it was at the time, Naoya knew he could slightly feel the emotions from those around him and these abilities only continued to grow stronger with time until, finally, when he was five years old he touched the hand of his father's business partner. With this act Naoya saw the man's dark intentions to con his father for the sake of bettering his family.

With that Naoya's abilities were fully awakened and from that moment forth, touch by any other but his brother meant seeing their memories which would only lead to pain. Like any other individual with a healthy amount of self-preservation, he quickly began to retreat into himself and move closer to his brother all in one breath in attempt to protect himself. Because of this, Naoya developed personal space issues and tends to shrink away if anyone gets to close. Regardless, when Naoya turned six his parents desperate to do something for their sons (with Naoto attacking everyone and Naoya becoming increasingly reclusive) decided to drug Naoya and his brother and the two were quickly handed over to the care of a man named Mikuriya. After waking up Naoya found himself in what he later learned to be a research facility hidden deep in the forest built specifically for the study of the people like him and his brother. Understandably his brother was not amused in the slightest and began to take his anger out on the team of researchers before Naoya could manage to calm him.

Not long after this, Naoya finally got the opportunity to meet the curator of the facility who tried to reason with Naoya's brother (knowing that Naoya would follow his brother regardless) that going home was pointless and that the facility was their home now. This didn't go over well with Naoya's brother at all and he quickly escaped with Naoya in tow-- determined to return to his real home-- but was effortlessly stopped upon reaching a barrier that surrounded the grounds. This barrier was nothing more than a rope that strangely enough could discriminate who could leave and who couldn't. With this, Naoya and his brother were forced to resign themselves to life at the facility, one which Naoya eventually grew familiar with over time. Despite this, fifteen years later, for whatever prompting, Naoya's brother decided to try escaping one more time and Naoya did what he knew best and followed him regardless of his doubts.

This time though, the barrier that once kept the brothers so safely locked away was gone (the maker of said barrier having died not long before) and they quickly escaped with no trouble at all despite Naoya's reluctance to leave. Nothing became easier once Naoya and his brother were free though. If anything, things became far more chaotic when his brother became involved in a bar fight and Naoya saw the memories of five seperate murders in the process. Completely horrified, he begged his brother to help him as the memories played endlessly in his mind with gruesome detail until finally his brother researched the murders to find that only four of the five crimes had been found.

Yet the vision of the fifth girl being viciously murdered continued to play out repeatedly to the point of Naoya losing his sanity and it was not until a strange girl told him that the vision was not "of the past", but really a premonition, that he regained the strength to do something about it. With a great amount of his brother's aid, Naoya was finally able to track down the murderer and stop her from killing yet another but was unable to stop the murderer from committing suicide after mentioning someone who was chasing her.

Some time afterwards, Naoya and his brother returned to their old home only to find that their house had vanished and with it the existence of their parents. When there, there were told that they must find "what they had lost" on their own and the mention of reality being altered was briefly brought up. Completely distraught regardless of the aid their old guardian, Mikuriya, was willing to give them, Naoya and his brother left their old neighborhood with the hopes of finding their parents. Yet these hopes soon had to be pushed aside when Naoya and his brother soon learned that they were meant to play a role in a grand-scale phenomena called the "Upheaval" as prochesized by the specter-like girl named Shouko. This news understandably did not go over well with the two brothers and in result they accidentally released dark energy (which was influenced by their fear of this Upheaval) which shaped itself into a tattooed man and proceeded to try and kill the messenger of the horrible news.

After a great amount of effort and time, Naoya and his brother eventually managed to drive off this dark energy. Yet before they could do so, the "man" taunted the two brothers with their missing parents and told them that their memories were false, that instead Naoya and his brother had killed them and burnt down the house in result.

Afterwards, the two brothers made yet another attempt to live in peace, going from one hotel to another as they made some attempts to find their parents. Yet while they did this, another man with the gift of foresight-- and a fanclub, to boot-- saw a premonition of the destruction of mankind with the involvement of Naoya and his brother. This immediately doomed all of the brothers' attempts at peace and quiet due when one of the man's fans attempted to kill Naoya to prevent the vision of destruction from ever coming to existence.

Understandably, the two brothers were confused by what was happening and so, the very next day, they both went to see this man with foresight. Once there, the three of them talked and Naoya's brother grew enraged at the man's indifference to learning that Naoya had nearly been killed. After calming him down, Naoya attempted to see exactly what the man's premonition had been yet without realizing it the other man (who was learned to be named Kamiya) also attempted to look into the future again and the two of their minds connected, allowing both of them to see the future far more clearly. Because of this "connection", something was immediately sparked in Naoya's mind and his precognitive abilities began to grow rapidly. With a second attempt to look into the future the two foreseers saw the cause of the destruction was a virus meant to cure HIV.

With this in mind, Naoya and his brother went to speak with the scientist developing the virus in attempt to convince them to stop. Eventually, after saving the woman from Kamiya's fanclub-slash-makeshift-assasins twice as well as saving her from her psychotic assistant, the woman finally decided to listen to Naoya's brother's claims that she would be the cause of the destruction of mankind and deleted all research data for the virus.

Once finished with all this, the two brothers once again attempted to get some peace. An attempt which was immediately shot down. Not long after the incident with the virus, two men from Ark arrived and began using mind control on those around them in order to catch Naoya and his brother's attention. Once done so, one of the two men—Sonezaki—immediately set on the task of recruiting the two brothers for Ark which turned out to be an organization not unlike the mafia. Yet regardless of all Sonezaki's persuasion, all the two men managed to do was enrage Naoya's brother and the two men fled for the moment.

Immediately afterwards, Naoya had a vision of the research center burning to the ground and Mikuriya calling for help. Frantically, the telepath begged his brother to help and the two quickly returned to the forest to find their old guardian hiding in a small shack in attempt to protect himself from the attackers. After great debate, the two brothers finally resolved to help him and the three began to trek through the woods with the attackers on their heels. On the way, Mikuriya tried to explain why he had brought Naoya and he brother to the research center and also explained that their powers were the result of being able to use 70% of their minds. He also explained that, should they grow any stronger, they ran risk of fading into nothingness as the girl—Shouko—had done after growing too strong. With this explanation, the attackers grew bored and finally attacked, going after Naoya's brother with their endless attacks. Desperate to help his brother, Naoya ignored Mikuriya's warning about growing stronger and merged with the energy of the forest, driving away the attackers—if only for the moment.

Yet Mikuriya's words proved to be truthful. Not long after helping Mikuriya escape from the forest, Naoya disappeared from existence for a brief moment before returning, unsurprisingly shocked beyond words. After disappearing two more times in the span of a day, each disappearance longer than the rest, Naoya made the promise to his frightened and worried brother that he would not leave him. Once that was settled, Naoya then told his brother that he saw where their parents were and the two quickly went to visit them.

To their surprise though, their parents had aged considerably and did not know who Naoya or his brother were. Not only that, but they believed their sons—coincidentally also named Naoya and Naoto—had died when they were six and twelve (respectively) when saving a girl from a boating accident. Regardless, not long after their arrival, Sonezaki arrived as well and began tormenting their parents until finally Shouko stepped in and caused his mind control powers to backfire upon himself, driving him insane. But rather than receiving gratitude from their parents, Naoya and his brother were immediately told to leave with their parents fearfully watching their every move. Completely torn up, Naoya left his parents for the final time realizing he would never see them again.

Some time later, Naoya and his brother once again were attempting to live a peaceful life (oh how they try) when they were stopped one day on the streets by a woman. The woman, the wife of a man named Futami who had been working for Ark once upon a time, led them to a secret facility where a video recording of Futami explained exactly what Ark was. Before they could finish the tape though, the second man working for Ark from who had visited the two brothers before with Sonezaki arrived and with a thinly veiled threat forced Naoya and his brother to accompany him to the Ark headquarters. Once there, the two spoke briefly to another man who Naoya's brother promptly told they had no interest of joining Ark and, surprisingly enough, Naoya was the one to grow angry during the conversation when hearing the man's complete indifference to killing others. After being calmed down by his brother, the man received a call and turned his attention away causing Naoya to sense that Futami was somewhere was within the building via the cellphone yet before he could figure out where they were forced to leave.

Soon after, the two were confronted by the trio they fought in the woods with Mikuriya and the three were not so happy to see them. Yet before anything could begin, the room filled with sand and they all were transported to another realm, courtesy of Shouko, where Naoto overwhelmed the other three with his power and ultimately killed them. Before this could sink in though, Shouko appeared-- much to Naoya's happiness-- and told them she must go on a journey "to another world" before transforming into a large butterfly-like creature and disappearing. (They never explain this, but I believe that her "journey" was rather her death or perhaps that she had grown too strong to stay within that plane of existence). After the battle, the two returned once more to their own realm where they quickly found a computer in the building and hacked into it in time to hear Futami plead for them to save "that girl" and that he would be "waiting at Misaki".

Later the next day, at the intended place Futami said he'd be, Naoya and his brother waited for the other to show up while Naoya questioned the nature of humanity. Yet while doing so, Naoya saw a man-- later learned to be named Tsuzuki-- frantically running around with a cellphone which no one else could see. Leaping to his feet, Naoya intently followed after only to stop short as the frequencies of the cellphones around him connected with his mind causing him to become overwhelmed with the multitudes of voices. Upon opening his eyes again, Naoya found himself to be in the realm of technology while his body remained in his original world. With him was none other than Futami himself floating before him asking him to "save her" from Ark and only after further prompting did the other man explain that "things would get bad" if Ark got their hands on a girl known as Sakie. With that, Futami then showed the young man countless images of the city before they overwhelmed him and he lost consciousness.

This is when Naoya is brought to Landel's.

Personality

While he has grown up a lot throughout the course of the series, Naoya is in many ways just like a little boy. For one, after seeing a rather traumatic vision, whether premonition or memory, Naoya will not hesitate to call his brother for comfort or aid. (Though he can handle a few traumatic memories if he really needs to, depending on how distraught he already is when the vision is seen.) Secondly, regardless of the situation, Naoya has always been known to stick to his brother's side like glue as well as sometimes hold his hand and, if he is frightened enough, he has been known to resort to hiding behind Naoto for safety (though he doesn't do that as much as the hand holding) or cling to Naoto if not being hugged. Also, if left alone and he has no idea where his brother is, Naoya will panic and worry until finally giving up his search momentarily with the expression of an abandoned child. Another thing, Naoya has a very low sense of self-worth, seeing himself as nothing but a weak individual who can do nothing without his "niisan" which leads him to rely on his brother even more.

Yet despite all this, Naoya is usually somewhat self-dependent. He hates it when others get hurt or feel any form of pain and so he tries to help those who who need the help. While he does cry when too overwhelmed, Naoya is not one to cry over everything and he understands that running away solves nothing. He also is very honest, saying what is needed to be said yet tactful enough to know when to say it. Due to his pacifistic nature, he refuses to harm or attack anything regardless of if it's attacking him.

Generally, Naoya is very withdrawn and silent, more willing to observe others than share things about himself. He is very logical, patient, and polite unless angered by violent behaviors or worried about the well-being of another. On that note, when around his brother, Naoya is infinitely more patient and far more open than he usually is. He is also far more caring than he usually is considering Naoto is one of the few Naoya can touch.
