Naruto
[for having such a large population, we have slacked. D: pending full write-up, here is the basic information]
Naruto is a world with NINJA (omg!). They kill each other with sharp pointy objects and 'chakra' (which is like 'chi' in every other shonen manga or 'furyoku' in Shaman King, and used like magic points in a game; chakra is used to power ninjutsu and genjutsu or boost taijutsu and other non-ninja-specific attacks). Technology like video game consoles, televisions, phones, radio transmitters and the like exist, but cars, steamboats, guns, and other such advanced technology does not. It has recently passed through some very violent times and as it is a world of NINJA, most of the characters from Naruto are familiar with death and killing.
The ninja are separated into 'hidden villages,' of which there are five main ones. Most characters from canon are from Konohagakure or Sunagakure. Characters like Sasuke are Otogakure which, while not a main village, is important in the storyline and thus worth mentioning. Zabuza and Haku are missing-nin from 'the Bloody Mist,' which is referenced in canon without either seeing the village (except for the part where Zabuza frolics in the flames) or hearing of its current status.
Konoha and Suna are happy BFF omg, largely because the Kazekage (leader of Suna) fanboys Naruto (the title and main character), who is from Konoha. There are possibly other reasons, but this is the true story, and any fan will tell you such. (... this summary is disintegrating. Sorry. Formal version up soon???) The other villages are either not friends or friends in secret; it has not been clarified in canon.
Oto used to be friends with Suna, but the relationship turned sour. It is unclear as to Oto's current status with regards to the other hidden villages.
Akatsuki is an evil organization that wants to take over the world by extracting the huge and special chakra of the 'tailed beasts,' one of which is the title character, Naruto. It's either that, or they're trying to build a gay club and need better lighting for the center statue. At any rate, they're chasing the tailed beasts ('jinchuuriki' or 'bijuu').
Current Plot: Uchiha Itachi of Akatsuki is after Uzumaki Naruto of Konohagakure, who is after Uchiha Sasuke of Otogakure, who is after Uchiha Itachi of Akatsuki. Some other stuff is also happening.
