Background

Phoenix was born in the small city of Yokosuka, Japan. He had never aspired to be much throughout his elementary years, happy to attend school with his best friend Larry Butz and blow off schoolwork. However, when he was nine years old, he was accused of stealing a fellow classmate's lunch money, and the class had a mock trial to determine whether he was guilty or not. No one had any evidence as to why Phoenix was the accused, but he had been inside the building when it had happened, and no one needed more evidence than that to accuse him of doing it, since no one else could have been present at the scene of the crime.

All of his classmates accused him of being guilty, and even the teacher seemed to think he was, as well. However, right before the teacher gave her judgement, the student who had lost the money stood up and defended Phoenix, saying that there was no evidence to support their claims. His name was Miles Edgeworth. Larry Butz also stepped in to defend Phoenix similarly, and Phoenix was let off the hook because of them.

After that, Phoenix, Miles, and Larry were inseperable as friends. A year after the incident, however, Miles abruptly transferred schools, for no apparent reason. No matter how many times Phoenix tried to get ahold of his best friend, there was no answer, and the fact haunted Phoenix for a long while.

A short while after Miles had left the elementary school, Phoenix's mother died in a car crash on Christmas Eve, killed by a drunk driver. He has never gotten a driver's license because he does not want to have that capability in his hands, to kill someone with carelessness. Phoenix was primarily raised by his father, who never remarried, and struggled to put his son through school. Phoenix abandoned his lackadastic attitude when it came to his classwork because of his father's perseverance, and while he was as quirky and cheerful as always, he developed a strong sense of focus and shrewd observability on the way.

As he progressed through high school, he decided that he would take up law school, so that no one would be wrongly accused as he had been in the past. Silly as the idea seemed, he was strongly influenced into becoming a lawyer primarily by the situation he had experienced as a youth. He was also sure that he would be able to meet Edgeworth along the way, since his friend had been so intensely in love with being a defense lawyer.

Phoenix attended college at Yuumei University, where he met a girl named Chinami, whom he dated for about half a year. As a gift, she gave him a crystal pendant the first time they met. However, when Chinami's ex boyfriend confronted Phoenix about dating her and ended up dead, Phoenix ended up on trial, framed for the murder. A female defense attorney by the name of Mia Fey defended him and proved that the necklace was a piece of evidence from a past murder case that Chinami had been trying to escape from, and managed to get Phoenix off the hook and proclaimed innocent. She became his mentor soon after, and when Phoenix was given his first case, she was his advisor. Mia was then murdered almost directly after Phoenix's first victory.

To say the least, Phoenix was shaken up. However, her passing away was accompanied by the sudden presence of her sister, Maya Fey, a spiritual medium, and she aided him in the case as he took it. However, she was also the person he ended up defending, since she became the accused, having been present at the scene of the crime. Phoenix then risked both his life and his career as he investigated the corporation Mia had been investigating, and he finally came face to face with Miles Edgeworth. After the nearly fatal face-off between Phoenix and the CEO of Bluecorp, Redd White, Phoenix emerged victorious, mainly as a result of Maya's spiritual channelling of Mia.

Phoenix's third case passed smoothly as he became accustomed to his new position as a defense lawyer, and he soon came upon his fourth case, where he ended up in a strange predicament: Edgeworth, his rival, became the accused! While Edgeworth was extremely reluctant to let himself be defended by Phoenix, he eventually had no choice, and gave in. Edgeworth, accused of the murder of a man named Robert Hammond, had most of the cards stacked up against him horribly, and had no hope of escaping the accusations, even though he knew he was innocent.

While Phoenix knew that Edgeworth had held no interest in being friends with him for the longest time, Phoenix struggled to piece together the case to the best of his abilities, having faith in Edgeworth. Phoenix ended up finding out about Edgeworth's past, where his father was killed after losing a case he was defending, which gave reason as to why Miles had been relocated to another school.

Phoenix was also pitted against his most fearful opponent yet, Manfred von Karma. von Karma, a perfectionist to an extreme degree, was also Edgeworth's mentor and caretaker after his father had passed away. von Karma is well known for his fabrication of evidence and testimonies, and this case was hardly an exception. Through some brilliant conjecturing, Phoenix discovered the truth behind the DL-6 case, which was regarding Edgeworth's father's death. He was not deterred even when Edgeworth stated that he had been the murderer, and had confessed, and eventually Phoenix ended up convicting von Karma for the murder of Edgeworth's father.

The fifth case Phoenix took revolved around yet again a case that had been seemingly solved in the past. The solution seemed simple, since the "killer", Lana Skye, had confessed to the murder -- however, the accused's sister, Ema, refused to believe that her sister had killed anyone, and sought Phoenix out to help her. Phoenix soon found out that the case was far from simple, and stemmed back to one of the first cases Edgeworth had ever prosecuted. Through a long, arduous process, Phoenix discovered the truth -- that the evidence had been covered up by no one other than Chief of Police, Damon Gant. As a result, Lana Skye was proven innocent, and Gant was convicted for the murder. However, during the proceedings, it was proven that Edgeworth had been in fact given falsified evidence in the case that had occurred prior, unbeknownst to him. Edgeworth then resigned from his position as prosecutor and left Japan, much to Phoenix's dismay.

Personality

Phoenix is, to put it quite simply, a nice guy. He is a dependable friend, and helps nearly anyone out, even if he doesn't know them well. He is also slightly gulliable when it comes to most things, and as a result, people don't think he's very intelligent. However, Phoenix is highly observant and detail oriented, and often his train of thought is unconventionally brilliant. He is someone that can both come up with something idiotic and something unexpectedly intelligent within a second, and he is unpredictable in that sense.

He is also very laid back, and only chooses to be serious about situations when that kind of attitude is called for. As a result, he can recover easily from bad situations and keep a cool head while turning things around to his favor.

Phoenix enjoys reading, sleeping, and hanging out with his friends [Larry and Maya, most of all]. Even though he seems to be a tough guy in court, he is frightened by thunderstorms and ghosts, and hates horror movies. Phoenix doesn't know how to drive, and he doesn't have a license, nor does he ever want one. And if there is one person that he misses the most, it's Edgeworth.

Description

Phoenix is of medium build, not too tall, but not too short, either. He stands at 5'9'', and has black, spiky hair and blue eyes. He also has odd eyebrows that zig-zag at the ends. His blue eyes come from his father, the oriental roundness of his face from his mother, his nationality being a mix of caucasian and Japanese. Casually, he wears normal clothing, which consists of usually a t-shirt, jeans, and sneakers. During cold seasons, he wears a thin blue parka to keep warm. In court, he wears a cheap blue suit and a pink tie.

Most of the time, his body language is directly related to his emotions. Phoenix is a bit of an open book when it comes to what he is feeling, whether it be angry, sad, or thoughtful. He is a horrible liar, and it is usually easy to tell just by his expression. When he is in court, however, and he believes strongly in his client, he has a commanding presence that is borderline frightening.

Currently in Landel's, he wears a grey shirt, sweats, and slippers, the uniform given to him by the orderlies.

At Landel's

Data known by Landel's: Phoenix is not a lawyer in this world. He was hit by a car, has been in a coma several times, and has come down with a terrible case of amnesia. He does not remember anything of his past in this universe.

People Phoenix Has Interacted With:

Adelheid Bernstein -- Phoenix, to put it quite simply, likes Adel. Adel is one of his friends, even while their relationship is slightly more of on an acquaintance basis than anything else, just because they haven't known each other for that long. Adelheid was the first person that Phoenix spoke to other than the nurses in the Institute.

Eric Draven -- Phoenix has met him once, but knows nothing about him other than his name, and the fact that he has "night vision".

Miles Edgeworth -- Edgeworth is his court rival back in their original world. Here, in Landel's, they have come to a more amicable relationship, and more. Phoenix cares so deeply about Edgeworth that he would do anything for him, and they are in a somewhat romantic relationship at this point.

Ougi Takaya -- Phoenix and he interacted briefly, but haven't spoken again.

Kenren Taisho -- Phoenix, Edgeworth, and he interacted briefly, and spoke temporarily about the state of Landel's.

Otacon -- Phoenix spoke to him briefly while he was rescuing Edgeworth from the M-U Experimental hall, and thinks he is an intelligent, caring person -- especially for his treatment of Edgeworth.

The Head Doctor -- Phoenix was spoken to by the Head Doctor regarding his outburst during his Chapel Speech, and Phoenix is still somewhat traumatized by the fact that the nurses sedated everyone but himself, leaving him to be the only one standing as the Head Doctor stared him down.

fake!Mia -- Phoenix was visited and spoken to by a woman who looked like Mia, yet wasn't Mia. Phoenix was upset by this at first, but after time, was inspired by the illogical nature of her existence.
