Backstory
Contains spoilers for the D.Gray-man manga to date.

Ravi is an exorcist, a member of the Black Order, which is a religious organization associated with the Vatican in the imaginary late nineteenth century world of D.Gray-man. Ultimately, the Order is working to save the world from destruction at the hands of a demon of sorts, called the Millennium Earl.

Officially, Ravi's background remains largely a mystery thus far. The story behind the eyepatch he wears over his right eye is still unknown and never seems to come up in conversation, but it doesn't seem to be hiding an injury. Ravi isn't actually his real name, either - in fact, apparently it's simply his 49th alias, one of the many he has been using as Bookman's apprentice, the next person in line to succeed the old man in the position of someone who records the hidden history of the world; that is, the history the rest of the world doesn't know about. This is supposed to be Ravi's main goal – technically he and Bookman are on the Black Order's side purely by chance and Ravi is discouraged from considering himself an ally of the organization, let alone viewing any of his fellow exorcists as friends. Unfortunately (at least from the point of view of a Bookman), Ravi seems to have trouble following this aspect of learning the ways of a Bookman.

Before they joined the Order roughly two years ago, Ravi and Bookman wandered from place to place to observe battles, never staying in one place for long, so it seems that joining the Order meant that this was the first time that Ravi was in one place for a longer period of time, which allowed him to get used to the people around him and appears to have had a gradual effect on his personality.

Ravi first appears in the manga when Allen Walker and Rinali Li, two other exorcists, end up in hospital after a recent mission. He is accompanying Bookman, whom the Black Order's Chief Supervisor, Komui Li, has come to get information from. After talking a little too much about matters he doesn't have the authority to discuss, Ravi gets kicked out of Rinali's room, along with Allen. They end up talking outside for a while, until Allen decides to walk off on his own, telling Ravi to go on ahead, back to the hospital, without him. Luckily, Ravi doesn't listen and follows Allen instead, finding him just in time to make sure that he doesn't fall victim to an Akuma attack. (Akuma are weapons created by the Millennium Earl in a rather gruesome way.) Together, they take care of the Akuma coming after them. Afterwards, Ravi gives Allen a ride back to the hospital – on his anti-Akuma weapon, a size-shifting hammer. There, while receiving punishment for crashing through the wall upon landing, Ravi and Allen, as well as Rinali and Bookman receive instructions concerning their next mission.

The Millennium Earl is after a special piece of Innocence (the substance exorcists use in their anti-Akuma weapons to fight against the Akuma) called the 'Heart', which is the core of all Innocence in the world, and the Black Order's exorcist generals have become his main targets. For that reason, teams of exorcists are being assigned to guard the remaining generals. The team Ravi is part of is told that they are to find and guard General Cross Marian.

The group leaves to carry out their mission, but on the train, Ravi discovers that Allen has been left behind. Bookman and Rinali convince him to go find the other boy. Ravi ends up finding Allen tied to a chair in a village, and not before long, he and Allen are asked to help rid the village of a supposed vampire that has been plaguing them – several villagers have already perished as the vampire's victims.

However, after Ravi and Allen actually encounter this vampire at his castle, it eventually turns out that the situation is quite different from what they had been led to believe. The so-called vampire, Aleister Crowley, is in fact someone who possesses a parasitic Innocence, like Allen's arm, in the form of his teeth. His 'innocent victims' were all Akuma. A good amount of fighting, being smashed through various walls and evading man-eating flowers later, Ravi and Allen continue on their way, with Crowley agreeing to join them.

After a somewhat unusual train ride, where Ravi gets to watch Allen cheat at poker to win back Crowley's lost clothes from a group of strangers, the three of them meet up with Rinali, Bookman and Timcanpi, Cross Marian's golem, and then it's off to China.

In China, a lead on Cross takes them to a brothel, supposedly where Cross was recently seen. As luck would have it, however, they discover that he is no longer there; Anita, the mistress of the brothel, informs them that Cross already left for Japan eight days ago. And that isn't the only bad news, as another piece of worse news comes their way – apparently Cross' ship has been sunk. In spite of that, the search is to continue. Anita provides a ship to take the exorcists to their next destination: Edo, Japan.

Unfortunately, there are still more hurdles to overcome before the team can even set out for their next destination. Before they can set sail, countless Akuma show up. Oddly enough, that isn't the biggest problem. The real issue is a Fallen exorcist, Suman Dark, whose Fallen form is in the process of destroying everything around him as it works to execute him. Ravi and the others end up getting separated from Allen, trying to deal with the Akuma, while Allen chooses to go after Suman in hopes of saving him from his fate.

Finally the battle ends and Ravi and Rinali leave in search of Allen. They are too late – he is no longer at the location where Timcanpi left him. To make matters worse, it appears that a Noah, one of the Earl's allies, has destroyed Allen's Innocence and tried to kill him. Nothing can be done to help, so Ravi and Rinali are forced to return to the ship, where they are instructed to leave Allen behind in China with the Black Order's Asia branch and go ahead without him. Miranda Lott, another exorcist, is dispatched from headquarters to join their team. With the help of her Innocence's ability, the damage the ship suffered in the recent battle is temporarily repaired and it can finally leave for Edo.

At sea, there are even more obstacles lying in store for the exorcists and their supporters. More Akuma, including a Level Three, arrive on the scene and attack the ship and its passengers and crew. While Ravi and the others remain with the ship to protect it and fend off the lower level Akuma, Rinali heads out to take care of the Level Three.

Once the Akuma have all been defeated, the situation continues to look grim. Rinali still hasn't returned to the ship after her battle. Worried, Ravi refuses to wait a moment longer and goes to look for her. Miles and miles of nothing but dark ocean around him aren't an encouraging sight, but he suddenly encounters an Akuma carrying a large crystal with Rinali encased inside. The crystal is made from Rinali's Innocence and the Akuma is apparently on their side, having been modified by Cross to follow his orders instead of the Millennium Earl's. Ravi and the Akuma take Rinali back to the ship and the Akuma reveals a little more information about Cross' reason for being in Edo.

Time is quickly running out and the exorcists need to reach their destination sooner rather than later. Chomesuke, as Ravi has decided to nickname the Akuma, helps to get the ship as close to Edo as possible. Before they actually manage to make it, however, the exorcists have to part ways with Anita and most of the crew of sailors. Miranda's ability had been keeping the ship repaired and everyone's injuries temporarily healed, but she's unable to continue invoking her Innocence out of exhaustion and is forced to release it, causing all damage and injuries to return. Anita and the crew, having received fatal wounds, die, while the broken ship sinks into the ocean.

The few remaining sailors accompany the group of exorcists from now on. They continue on their way in a smaller boat and finally reach Edo. There, Chomesuke leads them through the city, but suddenly, something seems to be wrong with him – the Earl is trying to gather all Akuma in Japan and Chomesuke is having trouble resisting the message, despite being a converted Akuma. Soon, the exorcists run into the Earl and the Noahs. Fighting ensues, in the midst of which one of the Noahs, Tiki – the one who destroyed Allen's Innocence – reveals that Allen is in fact still alive and will probably end up here very soon.

Things seem bad when the Earl unleashes a devastating attack on the area, then tries to destroy Rinali and her crystal, which he assumes may be the Heart itself, but suddenly Allen arrives. The Earl and the Noahs escape and it appears that everyone has a moment for a breather.

However, that turns out not to be the case at all. Unexpectedly, Rinali vanishes right before their very eyes, drawn into a strange dimension, 'Noah's Ark', by the Millennium Earl. Ravi, Allen, Kanda, Crowley and one of the sailors, Chaoji, follow. Inside the Ark, they soon receive the news that they have only three hours before the Ark will collapse, and there is supposedly no way out.

Surprisingly, Tiki shows up and gives them a key, seemingly providing a chance for them to find an exit out of the Ark, as long as they manage to get to the right door before time is up.

Before they can get very far, another one of the Noahs, Skin Boric, appears. Recognizing him as the Noah who has been after his general, Kanda makes the decision to stay behind and deal with him, while the others, though they are unwilling to leave Kanda to fight the Noah on his own, continue on ahead, making their way into a building with 'NOA' written on its entrance door.

Instead of getting anywhere else inside the Ark, however, this is where Ravi suddenly finds himself waking up in a strange bed that turns out to be at Landel's.

Personality
Contains some manga spoilers.

At a glance, Ravi is usually friendly, laid-back, outgoing and talkative. He enjoys being around other people and manages to get along with most of them fairly well most of the time, as he tends to go about dealing with practically everyone he meets in a light-hearted manner, fond of joking around with his friends and teasing them – not maliciously, of course – as well as making a habit of giving people nicknames. He is relatively informal with his speech and behaviour towards others, not necessarily in a rude way, but simply a casual sort of friendliness.

Generally open with his emotions, Ravi doesn't really seem to hide anything when it comes to those. He is easy enough to read, and his emotions, whether positive or negative, are hard to miss – Ravi doesn't hold back when it comes to showing the positive ones and is quick to have a smile ready, but he also doesn't hold back when something happens to cause genuinely negative emotions to take over. And when that does happen, he can lose his temper, becoming upset or angry and yelling or even lashing out violently, as proven by a certain broken window incident. In battle, if he gets pissed off, he has a tendency to smile or grin nonetheless and throw taunts – if it's a far more serious situation, however, he may simply be angry, which is something that was seen when he reacted with an outburst of rage in response to Tiki’s words regarding Allen's 'death', in Edo, as well as his heated reaction shortly after the ship to Edo had set sail and what happened to Allen came up in conversation.

At times he can come off as a little insensitive, speaking his mind or responding even to serious situations with remarks that might seem somewhat out of place at the time. If he does hurt someone's feelings because of that, he realizes and regrets it quickly, but he won't necessarily take back what he has said.

There are things that Ravi is forced to keep to himself, though, whether he likes it or not. His role as future Bookman means that he must learn to be nothing more than an impartial onlooker at all times, regardless of the situation; someone who can record everything that needs to be recorded without any bias, and he shouldn't get close to anyone. He has to remind himself that 'a Bookman has no need for a heart' – unfortunately for Ravi, it's very obvious that he can't simply lock his heart away, as he can no longer help becoming emotionally involved with the people he interacts with closely and reacting to situations that happen. Sometimes that may drive him to be reckless.

However, apparently the personality Ravi normally displays hasn't always been the way he is. Prior to coming to the Order, Ravi was noticeably indifferent towards people, seeming bored and apathetic when he spoke of constantly observing battle after battle, and calling people stupid in a way that implies that he may have had the 'impartial onlooker watching from the sidelines' part of being a Bookman down back then - in the past, it seems that he was able to see humans as nothing more than ink on a page and any friendliness was only feigned for the sake of recording history.

But as time passed and he continued to deal with the people around him, Ravi began to change, to the point where he wasn't sure whether he was really just pretending anymore. Now he genuinely seems to care about his friends, in spite of being aware of the fact that he shouldn't.

More a quirk than an actual aspect of his personality, Ravi seems rather appreciative of attractive women. Coming across one can cause him to be oblivious to anything else for a while, although he claims that it's not just looks that grab his attention, but personality matters, too.
