Backstory
While several significant events do occur prior to his run-in with Cloud in the Sector Five church while he was attempting to capture Aerith (such as the cover-up in Nibelheim and the escape of both Cloud and Zack) Reno’s story really begins starting from the point he treads upon Aerith’s precious flowers. Not long after, he faces off against the members of AVALANCHE (Barret, Cloud, and Tifa, specifically) as they attempt to stop his destruction of the Sector Seven Pillar. He manages to detonate the bomb, crushing the entire Sector Seven and everyone within it. He doesn’t escape unscathed, however. The battle put him out of commission, during which Elena is given Turk status. Reno was rather irked by this development, feeling as though he’d been replaced by an incompetent blonde girl. Sector Seven remains the only incident in which he feels a certain sense of regret. On the other hand, he also sort of views it as a rather nice accomplishment, in purely technical terms.

He confronts AVALANCHE several times more (in Gongaga, for one, and near the end with the Huge Materia, for another), but throughout it all, holds no real grudges against them. Indeed, not only do AVALANCHE and the Turks part in Wutai without a fight, they work together after Elena and Yuffie somehow manage to get themselves kidnapped by Don Corneo. After finding the two girls, Reno neatly scratches Corneo off the face of the planet without so much as a hesitation.

Following his final encounter with AVALANCHE in the Sector Eight underground—at which point in time Shin-Ra is in a tumult and essentially done for—he simply leaves together with his two remaining colleagues (Tseng having been severely wounded earlier by Sephiroth in the Temple of Ancients) and travels to safety just moments before everything blows apart.

Shin-Ra’s fall impacted him quite a bit, as the company has really been the only life he’s known for a good many years. The near-death and injury of his President has also shaken him up. He moved on rather quickly, though, and it wasn’t long before he began thinking it was nice to not have to show up to the office everyday. But it also wasn’t long before he started getting utterly bored.

Midgar was—and to some extent still is—in ruins. Although things did settle somewhat, the distinct lack of Turk work meant Reno had even reluctantly taken on the dull job of helping rebuild Shin-Ra, mainly by scouting out potential future employees while keeping a close eye on the injured President Rufus. It is only now, with the recent stirrings of Jenova, Geostigma, and rumours of three silver-haired men, that he and the other Turks have been led to investigate deep within the Northern Crater. The last thing he remembers is narrowly escaping in a helicopter, leaving behind not one, but two of his fellow Turks.

Personality
Cocky, cynical, and blunt, Reno often comes off as lazy and obnoxious. That’s not to say that he’s a complete asshole, however, as he knows that it isn’t too smart to have a bunch of enemies and no friends. He doesn’t piss people off deliberately unless he knows them well enough to know that they won’t hold it against him, or he’s decided he definitely doesn’t like that person. He will never, though, mince his words or smooth-talk except for when he’s decided he can use something from someone. Few get to see the professional side of him, which does exist beneath his normally playful and flippant exterior and only comes out when he’s on the job (and sometimes not even then). He knows he’s good-looking and won’t hesitate to use that to his advantage. In other words, he can flirt with the best of them.

While he’s certainly no dreamer, his stubbornness sometimes causes him to have more optimism than one would usually expect from him. He has no trouble seeing reality for what it is, but whether he’ll accept it is another story. He won’t conform for the sake of conformity, and hierarchy has no place in his mind: he respects those he deems worthy of it. Even then, he’ll be hard-pressed to outwardly show that respect, and the only real sign one could spot is that he’ll willingly listen to that person. To him, rules are a made to be broken; authority is to be scoffed at. Though he can—and will—bend if there’s no other way, he’ll be far from happy. When it comes down to it, he'd rather take a beating than swallow his pride, even while he's aware that it's an idiotic move (although experience over the years has wised him up a bit).

It’s rare for something to capture his full attention for long. He’s easily bored, and he’ll always be fidgeting—playing with his hair, drumming his fingers, or fiddling with whatever he can get his hands on. More often than not, he’s smoking a cigarette or downing some form of alcohol (or both). The only time he will pay attention is when he finally sets his mind on completing whatever task has been assigned to him. He’ll bitch and moan (and bitch some more) about having to put in any sort effort whatsoever, but when he finally decides to do something, he makes sure it gets done.

He’s got a sharp tongue and can gossip like a housewife if the mood strikes him. He also likes a good brawl if he can get one. Both his quick temper and often cutting words mean that he usually has no trouble in doing so. Fighting dirty definitely isn’t beneath him, and he’s pretty shameless in his combat tactics—he won’t hesitate to use his nails if it’ll get him out of a tight spot. Though impulsive, his sharp instincts and perceptiveness tend to help him out in making the right call (emphasis on tend). Sometimes, though, he’ll take on more than he can handle. He’s not the best at plotting things out in advance, either, which is probably just as well considering he has trouble sticking to any plans at all.

He also likes to think himself as not needing anyone. This may be true to some degree, but he certainly needs people around him, if not necessarily with him. He hates (and will never admit he’s scared of) absolute isolation, and if it comes down to that, it won’t be long before he starts talking to himself or pretending there are people in the room when there isn’t. He doesn’t trust easily, although he’ll be sociable to anyone who doesn’t rub him the wrong way. He particularly hates those who condescend, and avoids people who can apparently read him too well (with the exception of Rude). The few he does consider close friends (a grand total of four people), he is fully loyal to.

He’s quick and efficient, both of which is mainly due to the fact that he’s one to avoid work as much as possible. After all, the faster he gets work done, the more time he has to do his own thing. He has a general “live and let live” attitude towards others, and what people do is entirely their business—until it interferes with him. He doesn’t like being wrong or bested, but he also doesn’t have enough ambition to want to be the very top of anything. He generally likes having a leader, anyway, which may seem odd given his disdain at authority, but his reasoning is that it’s always nice to have someone to point the finger at should things go wrong (plus, there’s less thinking required in following orders, and he’s got to have someone to argue with). He will pick up the role of a leader, but only when it seems no one else will do it or if whoever’s in charge is totally useless.

At Landel's
Reno arrived at Landel's during Nightshift 19, and immediately ran into the President, who he ended up brawling with on his second night here, due to Special Counselling. Rufus does not seem to blame him for this event, although Reno still feels a bit guilty over it. However, his general attitude is that if even the victim isn't going to beat him up over it, he certainly won't. He actually feels a lot worse about what he said more than the injury, but that, too, has been filed away in his mind.

To his knowledge, Rufus was the only one he injured, as Sasuke has yet to reveal to him that Reno manged to shoot him in the leg, as well.

Landel's threw Reno initially, too, as a result of Elena's age-reduction, especially as she had been severely injured. Reno has never quite had to look out for anyone other than the President, and with him feeling as though Elena should be added to that list led to a few complications. He's since admitted that Elena is capable of taking care of herself, and has managed to sort out his priorities.

The visit from "Rude" didn't help things, either. Reno still has yet to figure out what to make of this incident. As a result, he's simply opted not to think about it for now.

At the moment, he is in posession of a gun (acquired from Junior) containing a limited number of bullets.

Of the people outside his world, Reno has spoken briefly to Ichigo, Rangiku, Hakkai, and Claire, exchanged nods with Cliff and Renji, and travelled around for one night with Hughes, Roy, and Alfons, the last of whom he also spoke to the next day, as well. He attacked Sasuke while under Special Counseling, and then ate breakfast with him the next day, which resulted in him explaining the mechanics of a pistol. He also spent one full night with Dean, plus a chunk of the day after (during which Dean got involved in a little scuffle that went on between Reno and Sephiroth). He's met Wesker and Darmon, but hasn't really spoken to either. Of these people, he rather likes Alfons, Hughes, and Dean (and, in some way, feels he owes Dean), finds Sasuke interesting, is neutral with Roy, remembers Rangiku's chest, and hasn't given much thought to anyone else.

Azel was his roommate, but has disappeared as of Nightshift 24, to be replaced with Count D. Reno was fairly indifferent with Azel and as a result, responded to the missing boy with a general "What?" before moving on. As for D, Reno's not too sure what to make of him.

Reno has also run into Schuldig, who he really, really doesn't like. At all. If not for Rufus, he wouldn't be tolerating Schuldig's presence right now.
