Roronoa ZoroName: Roronoa Zoro (a.k.a. Pirate Hunter Zoro)

"Real" Name:
Jean-David Hunter
Room: M72
Roommate: Simon (Gurren Lagann)
Eye Color: Dark/Black
Hair Color: Green
Height: 5' 10" (178 cm)
Physical Description: Tanned and bulky in build, Zoro has cropped green hair, and the odd distinction of not having the same hairy legs as most of the older men on the Straw Hat crew. His eyes are flat but sharp, and his features are very notably shark-like. He has a wide forehead, a small nose, and a big mouth. His hands, as well as his feet, are very big (which is pretty much the general style of the series) and he’s prone to snarling, scowling, and frowning.
Notable Scars: Across his torso: approximately from the left underarm to the right hip (sword wound); just above both ankles: scars going around both legs, as if someone tried to cut them off (sword wounds). He probably also has a couple of scratches/small scars on random parts of his front.

Brief History (general spoiler warning!)

Early Life

Raised in Shimutsuki Village, a young, itinerant and very passionate Zoro, already lacking in parents at his young age, became a student at a dojo after challenging (and losing) to the daughter of the master there. Even as a child, he was very adept at sword fighting, gradually building up his technique and very easily beating everyone, grown ups included. Everyone, that is, except the daughter of the swords master: Kunia. Two years older than Zoro and beating him a total of 2000 times despite his powerful two-sword-style (later to evolve into three), she was Zoro’s ideal. He was obsessed with his “shameful” defeats and trained relentlessly to defeat her.

He later challenged her to a duel with real blades, their 2001th fight, and lost once again. Frustrated, he revealed his dream of becoming the world’s strongest swordsman and she, in turn, confessed that she too was frustrated—her father told her that it was impossible for a girl to become the world’s strongest swordsman (woman) because of the physical handicaps women experienced after and when they hit puberty. Angry that his rival was surrendering to such a “stupid thing”, Zoro challenged Kunia and they made a promise that they would both try their hardest to become the world’s greatest swordsman/woman.

Kunia died the next day after slipping on the stairs and breaking her neck.

Zoro, furious at her for dying so easily, asked for her sword from her father and swore a new promise to fulfill
their dream, no matter what.

Years later found him leaving the dojo in search for the renowned Dracule “Hawkeyes” Mihawk, the world’s current “Invincible Swordsman”, but due to his incredibly bad sense of direction he got lost while following a bounty head, couldn’t find his way back home, and had to resort to hunting pirates with bounties on their heads to survive. He soon became known as “Pirate Hunter Zoro” (a title often followed by someone claiming that he was the devil in human skin) and was characterized by his distinctive black bandanna and three-sword fighting style.

Along his travels, he met Johnny and Yosaku—two bounty hunters he’d inspired with his unbeatable swordsmanship and strict code of discipline—while passing through a town being terrorized by two bounty heads (only expounded on in the anime version). He defeated the first one (if only to pay for one of his meals), invoking Johnny’s memories of wanting to become a “heroic” bounty hunter because of Zoro’s straight forward attitude towards his swordsmanship. Zoro became their motivation to try to defeat a bandit ransacking the village’s food supply and while they certainly got no where near winning, Zoro was there to save them in the end. Zoro even learned a bit from them, realizing that as a swordsman he should be able to bring out the best in all of his swords (many of his old ones broke simply because he put too much strain on them.) Johnny and Yosaku idolized him as their “aniki” and the three traveled together for a while until Zoro’s legendary bad sense of direction reared its ugly head once again.

He presumably did more bounty hunting after separating from Johnny and Yosaku, building up his reputation as a “demonic” pirate hunter. It’s also mentioned that Zoro was approached by a group of bounty hunters, Baroque Works, during this period of the time and was offered a “numbered” position in the organization (the group had a reward system that basically promotes their members through use of a number: the lower the number, the higher the position—i.e. “Mr. 0” is the boss and strongest member of the organization while “Mr. 1” i
s the second strongest. The number also serves as the members code name as neither real name nor personal history is supposed to be known about anyone in the organization). He declined stating that he would only join if he was made the boss (they, naturally enough, didn’t agree to that) and killed the agent sent to recruit him.

One of the movies also mentioned that Zoro briefly traveled with one of his friends, a man named Saga, from his old dojo. Saga saved Zoro's life while on a ship that was about to explode.

Some time before he met Luffy, Zoro entered a town under the tyrannical rule of “Axe-hand Morgan”, a power hungry Marine captain. The captain's son, a brat named Helmeppo, had a dog (wolf) that was a constant threat to the people of the town. Zoro killed the dog when it attacked a little girl and was arrested for this. He made a deal with Helmeppo wherein he would remain tied up to a pole for a month without food or water and that he’ll be set free of his “crime” if he lasts.

Luffy (along with Coby, a boy he saved from the pirate ship of a woman pirate named Alvida) arrives in town in the middle of Zoro’s “punishment” and decides that he wants the swordsman as his first crew member (note: it's never explicitly stated but a good percentage of the fandom refers to Zoro as Luffy's First Mate). After a series of events where it’s made clear that Helmeppo’s real intention was to execute Zoro, Luffy and his new crew mate manage to defeat Axe-hand Morgan, and set off to start their journey. Soon after that they meet Nami, an extremely talented Navigator-come-thief.

The rest, as they say, is history.

Pirate Life

[to be added later]

Note: Zoro was taken post-Water 7, right after the Straw Hat Pirates evade Vice-Admiral Garp and sail off in the Thousand Sunny. This is right before the Thriller Bark story arc and thus, he will not have any knowledge about Brook(e) and the like. The Straw Hat’s have, however, already sailed very near to where they find the floating “offering”. Zoro is on watch, Nami’s in the shower, Luffy and Usopp are putting a shark into the fish tank, and Sanji, Franky, and Robin are busy talking downstairs in one of the rooms. Essentially, he was taken him from the start of chapter 442—just as he opens his eyes in the crow’s nest. He was supposed to see a barrel floating in the water. Instead…

Powers and Abilities

Technique

Zoro is a master swordsman who utilizes Santoryu, his own three sword fighting style. One of the more notable traits of this technique is that Zoro, lacking in a third arm, puts one of the three swords in his mouth. Though he can fight with two, one, or no sword at all, it's been made clear that Zoro's at his best when using all three. He also seems to rely heavily on physical strength and is often seen lifting huge weights of up to a ton (or two).

Weapons

Although not particularly picky about what kind of sword he uses, Zoro seems to prefer katana as his main weapon. He substitutes his these when unable to reach or use any of his own swords on the battle field but the ones he frequently makes use of are:

- Wado Ichimonji, the white hilted katana Zoro asked for after Kuina died. It's been with him ever since and is one of the only things he considers a treasure. It's a Meitou and one of the 21 Great Blades.
- Sandai Kitetsu, a cursed sword Zoro was given right before entering the Grand Line. It's said that it can cut through virtually anything, although Zoro pegged it as a bit of a "problem child" most probably due to its curse. Though warned that all of its previous owners have ended up dead, Zoro seems to take its violent nature as more of a challenge than anything else.
- Yubashiri, a particularly light but sharp sword Zoro was given along with the Sandai Kitetsu. This was broken at the time Zoro was taken from and he had yet to find a good replacement for it.
- Shuusui, Zoro's most recent canon acquisition. Said to have a "temper", Shuusui is also noted to have a distinctive hardness about it and a very heavy weight as opposed to the light Yubashiri. It's a Meitou and one of the 21 Great Blades of the One Piece world, just like the Wado Ichimonji. Zoro has yet to gain this sword from the time he was taken to Landels.
