Backstory
So.
Not much is known about Roy’s childhood, so I suppose I’ll give my interpretation of it. Roy was born in Amestris, though his features make it obvious he’s from somewhere in Xing, which lies to the West. However, since he was born and raised in Amestris, he considers it his homeland. Being an only child, his parents had a lot of expectations for him. Joining the military was not one of them. However, that had always been what Roy wanted to do. Alchemy interested him from a young age and he knew that the best way to study and make use of it was through the military.

His parents didn’t like the thought of their son using alchemy, fighting in wars, or anything like that. Obviously, this caused a lot of conflict between them. Roy went so far as to enroll himself in military school—his skills in alchemy earned him enough scholarships that he was able to afford the tuition. (As a side note: In the manga, it turns out that Roy learns a lot of his alchemy under Riza Hawkeye’s father. But since we seem to be going by the anime for most of the Fullmetal Alchemist characters, I’m going to leave that out.)

It was in military school that Roy studied (his little butt off) to become a State Alchemist. That was his first big goal. If he managed to pull that off, he would be in a good position, able to use alchemy for the sake of the military. He didn’t mind being referred to as a “dog of the military.” That was what he had always wanted, after all. His personality fit that occupation and he couldn’t see himself doing anything else. It was also in cadet school, at the academy, that he met who was soon to become his best friend, Maes Hughes. While Roy was known to keep to himself, Hughes disregarded that and managed to somehow befriend him.

After a decent amount of years of studying (interspersed with gallivanting alongside Hughes), Roy managed to pass the State Alchemist exam and was officially dubbed the Flame Alchemist. This was truly a crowning moment for him, especially since he managed to achieve it at a rather young age considering. (Not as young as Fullmetal, admittedly, but still!) I’m guessing he was about nineteen or twenty when he passed the test.

While the Ishbal Massacre, as it has been called, had been lasting for a good amount of years, it was when Roy was about twenty-one or twenty-two that the Fuhrer, King Bradley, decided to send in all the State Alchemists to take care of the Ishbalans once and for all. So the inconceivable happened. Most people join the military not expecting to actually have to go to war and kill countless people, but Roy was lucky enough to be under a military government that enjoyed wars.

So the Flame Alchemist was shipped off to Ishbal. The war ended up being a turning point in his life. He got to see the true corruption of the military when he was forced to follow orders that made no sense—such as killing two doctors that were tending to people from both sides. The rationale was that they were helping the enemy, but that wasn’t something Roy could agree with. He followed his orders, even if he hated himself for it. (He almost killed himself afterward, but Dr. Marcoh stopped him.)

Things got worse, as he had to kill more and more innocent people without truly knowing why he was doing it. It didn't help that he had someone as insane and disregarding of human life as Zolf J. Kimbley as his raiding partner. The breaking point was when Basque Gran decided to allow red stones (incomplete Philosopher’s Stones) to be used as alchemy amplifiers. Roy was given one (attached to a ring that he wore on his finger) and was able to level an entire city with one snap. Obviously, with that much power, the massacre ended soon after.

Upon returning home, Roy was not in a good state of mind. Plagued by what he had done, he ended up locking himself in his apartment, studying human transmutation out of a hope that he could bring back those that he killed. He never went through with any of it, though, finding he was too much of a coward. His only real connection to the outside world for a good while was Hughes, who insisted on visiting with homemade pies (compliments of his then-girlfriend, future-wife Gracia) and encouraging words. Eventually, Hughes dragged Roy out of his slump.

Roy came to a decision. The only way he could absolve what he’d done in Ishbal was by working his way to the top of the military—namely, obtaining the position of Fuhrer so that he could be the one giving the orders. That way, ridiculous orders like the one he had received to kill those doctors wouldn’t exist any longer. Once he fully recovered (or as much as he could) from the war, Roy started to delve further into the military, making himself known and doing all he could to get promotion after promotion.

He was a Lieutenant Colonel when he heard of the Elric brothers and visited their country town of Rizenbul to try and encourage the boys to become State Alchemists. Interestingly enough, Edward took him up on this offer, obtaining State Alchemist status at the age of twelve. From then on, Roy did what he could to help the boy and his brother on their journey to find the Philosopher’s Stone—even if he had to risk doing certain things that the military wouldn’t approve of.

With Hughes ‘pushing him to the top from below,’ Roy became Colonel. AND THIS IS ALL I HAVE AT THE MOMENT. Some day, I shall edit this and continue.

Personality
Roy Mustang could most certainly be called a stiff. He hasn’t had the nicest of lives, though his less-than-savory relationship with his parents forced him to be a closed book even before the war. He could be called a misanthrope, since he doesn’t seem to enjoy people. His subordinates and Hughes tend to be the only ones he can handle. He knows full well how despicable the human race is, though he appears to have some faith in it as well.

Getting to know Roy wouldn’t be easy. While he will speak and converse with someone, it doesn’t tend to reveal much about who he is and what he’s like. He can be pleasant and cordial and is known for taking all sorts of young women on dates, but he never settles into a committed relationship. Once again, not a people person. It gives off the impression that he does it to keep up an established image and reputation rather than because he enjoys it.

Superficially, he comes off as a smug womanizer who's power-hungry. While his teasing of Fullmetal and constant charming of women is definitely amusing, that isn’t his true character. Those that know him better than that (his subordinates, Armstrong, and Hughes) are aware of what his true goals are—along with the reasoning behind them. The war forced him to construct even stronger walls, meaning there are very few people who he completely trusts.

Being part of the military, he has a sense of authority integrated in him. (That doesn’t stop him from procrastinating on paperwork, however. Or having a grudge against orders that don’t make moral sense to him.) He thinks of things from a military standpoint and at times ends up ordering around people even if they aren’t under his direct command. He does have stellar leadership skills, however, and those who work under him are fiercely loyal to him as a result. He does have a sillier side, though once again, that’s probably to cover up how closed-up he truly is. (I mean, he was a bit nuts in Episode 13, but he completely sobered up toward the end of it.)

Ishbal has left him with a bit of post traumatic stress disorder—not that he would ever admit to that. He’ll have flashbacks and mentions of it can throw him into a bit of a slump. He’s prone to depression because of it, which is why he keeps to himself. He doesn’t want to be a burden to people, considering he’s always done everything on his own. (Without parents who actually supported what he wanted to do with his life, that was inevitable.)

He’s a strong character, having overcome quite a few trials and tribulations. He challenges himself and doesn’t allow himself to have any limitations. All in all, he’s someone worth respecting, even if he isn’t someone you could necessarily get close to.
