Sanji

"Real" Name: Nathan Prince
Room: M65
Age: 19
Hair Color: Blonde
Eye Color: Dark
Height: 5'8"

Info is a bit out of order due to the length of the history.

Physical Description:

Sanji is lanky and of medium height - not tall, as some might want to assume. He's about 5'8" (one inch shorter than Zoro!). His most distinguishing features are his curly eyebrow (how it does that, no one knows) and his blond hair that always falls over his left eye. In fact, never once in the manga is that eye shown, though the anime does slip up a couple times. Like most of the characters in One Piece, he has rather large hands and feet. While he won't be able to at Landels, Sanji always wears suits or really ugly Hawaiian style shirts. Also of note are his hairy legs, often made fun of by fans but not particularly uncommon among One Piece characters either.

Personality:
The best thing about Sanji's personality are the many different aspects of it. On an average day with the crew just sitting around and being comfortable with each other, or while chatting with people around town, Sanji is your regular old fun-loving, amicable guy - even if he does try to keep up the appearance of cool with a capital C. In any combat situation, Sanji is all suave and collected, matching Zoro's serious demeanor. He is also a very prideful character, and will go a bit over the top sometimes not only for his own pride, but for respecting the pride of others.

Matters can change completely, however, should a female character become involved. Around women, especially fellow crew members Nami and Robin, Sanji is another person completely. Hearts in his eyes, he will often make a complete goof of himself in an effort to gain their affections. Nami especially will often take advantage of this, because he'll do whatever she says. He is also extremely protective of the female crew members, and will rush to their aid without hesitation. (He's protective of the male members too, but he covers that much better.) This doesn't mean that he can't be serious around women, because he definitely can - especially in dangerous situations. It's when they give him attention that he's the worst.

Sanji claims he was raised to treat women with extreme courtesy. A very big weakness of his is that he will never harm a woman. He won't raise a foot against them, even if the result is that he loses his life. This is a big thing. Even the zombie that received his shadow in Thriller Bark picked up this attitude for a while. While he's not the first character I would choose for "special counseling," should it be his turn I don't think even that would get him to harm a female character - focusing instead on any boys in the area. Now, adverse to this whole "respect" for women, Sanji is a closet pervert who loves seeing them in tight or limited clothing and would not pass up the opportunity to peek on them in the showers.

More than once in the series, Sanji has been manipulating events from the background and then rejoining the group at important moments. "Mr. Prince" and "the Hunter" are a couple of the aliases he's gone by while doing so. This is not always the case, but when it comes to a crew member for that job then Sanji's usually the one.

Though Sanji constantly argues with Zoro, theirs is an understood rivalry. Sanji's friends are very important to him, and when real arguments break out among the crew he will be one of the first to step in and try to forcefully stop it if need be.

Other items of note:
- Although he acts suave, he tends to have a rather coarse speaking style. He overuses the word "kuso" which is roughly translated to "crap" or "shit." He uses it often as a descriptor (Ex: "Hello. This is the Shitty Restaurant.") and more commonly when he's angry than anything else.

- He gets very happy and animated talking about All Blue.

- The fact that he is a cook also has a lot of influence on the way he handles himself with others as well as in combat. He fights with his feet, as the hands are too important to a cook, only resorting to kitchen knives if absolutely necessary.

- He can't stand to see food wasted, and he will never allow another person to starve as long as he can help it - even an enemy, and even if it puts him in harm's way.

Sanji - The Wiki @ Landel's Damned

History:
(SPOILERS)
First off, I have to point out that I will be following the manga version of Sanji's backstory. There aren't too many differences between the manga of One Piece and the anime (aside from the filler, obviously) but there are enough - especially in the case of Sanji's story, for me to need to make note of them.

Not much is known about Sanji's original home or parents, only that he came from the North Blue and eventually ended up working on a ship in the kitchen as an apprentice cook. He dreamed of one day finding "All Blue" - a place on the Grand Line where the four great oceans (North Blue, East Blue, South Blue, and West Blue) came together - thus containing fish and creatures from all of them at once. Such a place is considered a myth by most.

One day when Sanji was ten, the ship he worked on (Orbit) was attacked by a pirate ship owned by "Red-Leg" Zeff (named as such because of the way he fought with his feet and the blood that stained his boot afterwards). Sanji stood up to the pirates and their captain, claiming he wasn't going to die because he still had to find All Blue, and was easily beaten up and tossed aside. A fast storm interrupted the pirates further plans, however, and both ships were torn apart. The only survivors were Zeff and Sanji, whom the pirate captain had taken the effort to save for some reason.

They wind up stranded on a deserted island with little food and no water and no way to even fish because the whole island was on cliffs that one wouldn't be able to climb back up once one had gone down. Zeff gives Sanji a small bag of rations and tells him to wait on the other side of the island and only come back if he spots a ship. He himself has a much larger sack which Sanji takes to be more food (Zeff explains that he is an adult and thus requires more than Sanji). The boy does as he's told and manages to make the food he was given last 25 days (also relying on a puddle of water left from when it rains). At one point he actually catches sight of a ship but doesn't manage to get anyone's attention. He remembers sadly back to when he worked on the ship and he despised how the other cooks lowered themselves to eating others' leftovers.

After that he has nothing but the water, and on the 70th day on the island he finally decides to see if Zeff is still alive, having not left his side of the island the whole time. Climbing around, he finds the pirate still there, and it seems as though he has a tremendous amount of his rations left also. Angry and crazy with hunger, Sanji decides that he is going to take the rations by force so that he doesn't starve to death. Cutting open the bag, however, reveals nothing but gold and jewels. Zeff had given him all the food to begin with. Instead, the pirate had eaten his own right leg to survive. This meant that he could no longer be a pirate fighting as he had before. When Sanji asks him why he went through all that for him, Zeff replies "Because we have the same dream." The pirate had also wanted to find All Blue. He also has a new goal - if they ever got off the island, he was going to build a restaurant on the sea so that starving sailors and pirates wouldn't have to suffer over the huge expanse of blue.

Fifteen days after that, they were rescued by a ship - the same ship, actually, that had passed by three months before. As he'd said, Zeff soon started up the "Baratie," a restaurant at sea, with Sanji as his assistant head chef.

Here are the differences in that story from the anime. In the manga, there is a scene where Zeff tells one of his crew not to steal food from the ship they were ransacking - taking treasure was their goal, but he didn't like them touching someone else's food. So even then he had a certain code. In the anime, Zeff loses his leg while diving into the ocean to save Sanji (it gets caught in some debris and he removes it himself to keep going). On the island, he then eats nothing. There is no earlier sighting of a ship by Sanji, and one arrives right after he returns to Zeff instead of fifteen days after. Later in the manga, there is also a flashback to when Sanji started smoking - not long after they had started cooking on the Baratie, in order to make himself appear more mature. This means about age ten. The anime leaves this out.

While approaching the restaurant, the Strawhat's ship meets a Marine ship run by Lieutenant Fullbody. The marine doesn't have too much interest in them but has his men fire a cannon to sink the ship anyway. Luffy deflects the cannonball, but accidentally screws up and redirects it to the Baratie where it crashes into Zeff's bedroom. To make up for this incident, Zeff orders Luffy to work at the Baratie for a year. Over the next few days the young pirate captain tries to figure out a way to get this shortened.

Sanji first appears serving a meal to Fullbody, who he ends up angering and then, when attacked, beating soundly. Soon after, a captive pirate from Fullbody's ship escapes and, starving, comes into the restaurant to demand food. The other chefs kick him out, but Sanji feeds him, earning his gratitude. At this point Luffy, having seen this exchange, makes up his mind that Sanji should join his crew. Unfortunately the pirate, Gin, later returns with his captain, Don Krieg - the "strongest pirate in the East Blue." Once again, Sanji angers all the other chefs by feeding the pirate. Afterwards, however, Krieg demands that they hand over their ship as well as information Zeff had taken on the Grand Line. Gin is upset by this, as Krieg had promised not to do anything to the restaurant as long as he and his crew are fed.

To make a long story short, when all is said and done Krieg and his crew are defeated and taken away from the restaurant by Gin, who says they will meet again at the Grand Line. Having been deeply impressed by Zoro and (especially) Luffy, reminded of his dreams, and strongly encouraged by Zeff and the other chefs, Sanji decides to join Luffy's crew in order to get to the Grand Line and have a chance at finding All Blue.

Now because One Piece is so long and Sanji is a main character and there's no reason for me to spoil absolutely everything for you, I'm going to try and give just a brief run down of Sanji's role in each arc.

Arc: Arlong Park
Summary: The group follows Nami back to her hometown and find out that she is being forced to work for Arlong, a merman pirate, while she strives to save up money to buy her village from him. The crew fights Arlong for her sake and defeat him, freeing her to continue traveling with them.
Sanji's Role: You get to see a bit more of Sanji's personality here, and he is possibly a match for Zoro in combat.
Character Revelations: Not much, save that he already shows a strong amount of devotion to his new crewmates.

Arc: Loguetown
Summary: The crew travels to the town Gold Roger was born and executed in. They are attacked by Buggy, Alvida, and the Marines and escape with help from a man named Dragon.
Sanji's Role: No big role for Sanji here, though he is shown shopping for fish and this is also the first time he fights in tandem with Zoro.

Arc: Reverse Mountain (Laboon)
Summary: They cross over into the Grand Line by means of Reverse Mountain, meet a whale named Laboon who they promise to return to, capture two characters named Mr. 9 and Miss Wednesday, and receive a "log post" to help them travel the islands.
Sanji's Role: No big role for Sanji here.

Arc: Whiskey Peak
Summary: The crew arrives in a town that seems to welcome pirates and party themselves to sleep. Turns out the town is really run by people from a group called Baroque Works - the same group Mr. 9 and Miss Wednesday are from - that then tries to kill them but are thwarted by Zoro. As some higher ranked members of the group come to take out some of their own, it's revealed that Miss Wednesday and Mr. 8 were actually undercover operatives from the country of Alabasta (with Miss Wednesday actually being Princess Vivi). The crew agrees to help Vivi get back to Alabasta safely, and in the meanwhile other operatives discover that they know the identity of the head of Baroque Works and mark them for death.
Sanji's Role: Sanji parties (flirts with many women) and then sleeps through most of this arc, but as a result he and Usopp are not known to the head of the organization.

Arc: Little Garden
Summary: The group arrives on an island inhabited by large beasts and two giants who are doomed to fight every day until one is victorious and can return to their homeland. While there, they face off against Mr. 3 and Miss Golden Week of Baroque Works.
Sanji's Role: Sanji and Zoro compete to see who can kill the largest creature for meat to bring back on the ship. Sanji thus becomes separated from the others while he waits back at the ship for their return (not knowing they are off with the giants). During this time he finds Mr. 3's hideout and receives a call from Mr. 0 (Crocodile) which he answers as though he is Mr. 3 - telling him that the crew has been killed as ordered. He also knocks out the "unluckies" (Mr. 13 and Miss Friday) gaining the crew an eternal post set to Alabasta.
Character Revelations: Sanji is once again shown to be on similar footing as Zoro, as the creatures they bring in are both the same exact size.

Arc: Drum Island
Summary: Nami falls terribly ill and the crew must find an island with a doctor quickly. They arrive on an unnamed island that is always winter and unfortunately only has one doctor - Dr. Kureha. Toni Toni Chopper, a reindeer with a blue nose who'd eaten the human human fruit, was Kureha's apprentice and joins the crew after they defeat a pirate and former king of the island who'd come back to reclaim his throne.
Sanji's Role: Sanji gets himself nearly killed trying to help Luffy bring Nami to the mountain Kureha lived on (six broken ribs and an injured spine), once more showing his dedication to his friends.
Character Revelations: We begin to see how serious Sanji takes his "protect all women" policy. It's not only reserved for young attractive women, as he protects Kureha as well.

Arc: Alabasta
Summary: Arriving in Alabasta finally, the group sets about stopping Baroque Works and their efforts to destroy Alabasta through a Civil War. Crocodile and his various minions are defeated and his second in command - Miss All Sunday, aka Nico Robin, joins the crew.
Sanji's Role: On the way to Alabasta, the crew had met up with Mr. 2 Bon Clay, who has the ability to take the face of anyone he's seen. However, as he does not see Sanji, Crocodile does not know he exists. Sanji is then able to work undercover using the name Mr. Prince to mess with their enemies, eventually being responsible for freeing the rest of his crew when they are captured by the enemy. He also takes on Mr. 2 when the group is divided up to fight individual operatives and re-earns his friendship.
Character Revelations: During the fight with Mr. 2, we see that Sanji is incapable of not only kicking a woman, but anyone who looks like one. While Mr. 2 took the face of Nami, Sanji wouldn't land any attacks on him.

Arc: Jaya
Summary: The log post points to the next island being in the sky of all places, and the crew arrives on Jaya, where the main city, Mock Town, is known for being a place where dreams are ridiculed. There they meet Blackbeard for the first time. Further along the coast lives Montblanc cricket who has two (very ape-like) companions. He tells the story of his ancestor, who's dreams were also made fun of, and the crew sets off to prove some truth to them - catching an upward stream to Skypiea - the island in the sky.
Sanji's Role: No big role for Sanji here, but this is where he mentions he was originally from the North Blue.

Arc: Skypiea
Okay, this arc is really long and Sanji just does the normal fighting thing throughout. The only items of note are that Sanji and Usopp are once again separated from the group for a couple parts of it (like in Whiskey Peak), and he does a bit more sneaking around behind scenes at the end to sabotage the main villain's ship. (And the crew proves Cricket's ancestor's dream, the end.)

Arc: Davy Back Fight
Summary: The crew takes part in a silly competition with their own friends at stake. (There is actually a big difference between this arc in the manga and the anime that I could rant about, but it's not important to Sanji's app.)
Sanji's Role: Sanji is teamed with Zoro with an, as usual, unfair disadvantage against the other team. Sanji is the "ball" for their team and they argue the whole time, only managing to team up in the end to kick serious ass.
Character Revelations: Not much, save just showing more of how persuadable Sanji is by his female crewmates.

Arc: Water 7
Summary: [summary left out for length and spoilers]
Sanji's Role: Sanji does some more behind-the-scenes work in this arc, going under the name "The Hunter" this time. He finds out where Robin was taken and informs the others.
Character Revelations: While fighting a member of CP7, Sanji resorts to using kitchen knives when his feet prove less effective. This is a rarity for him, though he only uses them because his opponent's weapons are a food product and he touches nothing but food with the knives.

Arc: Enies Lobby
Summary: [summary left out for length and spoilers]
Sanji's Role: Sanji fights a woman (Kalifa) here, except not really. All he does is defend because he refuses to kick her outright even if it means his death, though he does try to feign attacking - trying to get her to back down by claiming he's stronger. He is thus defeated by her, but later returns to save Sogeking (Usopp) from his wolf-like opponent.
Character Revelations: This is the introduction of Sanji's special move "Diable Jambe."

Arc: Post-Enies
Summary: [summary left out for spoilers]
Sanji's Role: New bounty posters come out, with everyone (but poor Chopper) having a fair price on their heads. Unfortunately for "Black-Leg" Sanji, the photographer left the lens cap on when taking his picture and he ended up with a rather crappy composite drawing instead, which greatly upsets him. (The people back at the Baratie recognize him and start giving it out to all their customers.)

Arc: Thriller Bark
Summary: [summary left out for spoilers]
Sanji's Role: When Sanji finds out that Nami has gone missing and that some invisible man had peeked on her in the shower, he goes into a rage and, though his shadow is stolen, fights the villain who is trying to get Nami to wed him.
Character Revelations: Apparently another dream of Sanji's has been to get a hold of the invisibility fruit to spy on women in the shower himself, but since Nami's captor has it that is no longer a possibility for him.

This arc is not yet completed. Sanji is actually taken from before the above info occurs, but I have included it for the sake of character revelations.

What point in time are you taking your character from when he/she appears at Landel's?:
I'll be taking him from the latest arc, but not the latest point in the arc. While on Thriller Bark, Sanji has his shadow taken to raise a zombie (as do Zoro and Luffy). For a bit afterwards he is unconscious. I will be taking him from then. (Though he'll have his shadow at Landels, because things would just be unnecessarily weird otherwise.) This also means that he's from further ahead in time than the other OP characters at Landels so far.
