In the early years of the twenty-first century, crises erupted worldwide. Mutated pathogens, abnormal weather patterns, collapsed eco-systems and the Cuvier Syndrome, where corrupted data from the Sun interacted with human data, turning them into nothing more than stone.
Culture
The world of Digital Devil Saga is loosely split into two groups. The first is the Karma Society, the ruling elite who live on the planet's surface under the protection of a special dome. They enjoy all the luxuries of modern life and are protected by a powerful military force infected with the demon virus. However, this comes at a price. The members of the Karma SOciety infected with the virus must feed on other humans infected, putting the rest of the Society at risk. Any dissent is punished by being imprisoned and turned into a food source.
The other major group is the Lokapala, 'Guardians of the Gods', a rebel group inhabiting an underground city a few miles away from the Karma Society Dome. While they live in relative freedom, it is not an easy life as they are considered an underclass and are hunted for food by the Karma Society.
Powers
Once infected with the demon virus, humans are able to 'Tune' into the avatar of a demon, taking on their form and strength as well as weakness. With the assistance of mantras, they are also able to make use of special abilities such as magic like elemental attacks and healing. When solar data is strong, they may also go berserk, only part of them tuning into their avatar but gaining much strength. People infected with the demon virus are immune to the effects of the Cuvier Syndrome and can go out into the world unprotected.
However, this power comes at a great price. The demon virus requires those infected to devour the data of others infected or risk going insane and losing themselves completely to the demon mind.
