Snake was a member of Damned previously as an older man taken after the events of MGS2, where he lasted a week. He started to develop strong feelings for Fox again, but suffered mental trauma which pushed him almost to breaking point after losing an eye in an MU session. The presence of Raiden made him get his head together, however, and he, Raiden and Fox made an escape bid to the dark outer grounds. Fox and Raiden survived, but Snake was lethally injured, and begged Fox to euthanise him. His death left Fox on the edge of cracking, and it was only with the support of Lyta that he was able to handle the guilt.
With Lyta gone, Snake returned to Landel's - after the events of Zanzibar Land, the mission during which he had murdered Fox. With no memory of previous events, his old self's history is nothing more than awkwardness hanging in the air between him and Fox.
