Soul Eater

Soul Eater cast
World

Soul Eater is a story that takes place in a slightly altered version of contemporary Earth, where its protagonists may find themselves travelling to Italy, Egypt, or remote villages in Asia. Humans, however, share space with every imaginable creature, ranging from zombies, witches, shinigami, talking animals, faeries, werewolves, mummies, etc. Witches have been shown to live in a parallel dimension of their own, and when it comes to Earth, many popular pop culture references tend to crop up. Starbucks is instead Deathbucks, Jack the Ripper and Alcapone eat human souls, and Rasputin is killed by a schoolgirl in pigtails. The legendary sword Excalibur is depicted as a penguin-type thing with a cane.

Franken Stein happens to be quite the school teacher, too, as a matter of fact.

There are also beings with human appearances who can take on the form of weaponry. Eight hundred years prior to the opening of Soul Eater, a witch called Arachne murdered one of her fellows and used her soul to bind together a human and a weapon, giving birth to a race of people called "demon weapons." These people have an alternate weapon form, anything from a scythe to a chainsaw, and are able to transform parts of their body at will.

Demon weapons are often paired up with "weapon technicians" or "meisters"--as technicians can use their partners to fight and can amplify the power of their souls through their weapons--in order to purge corrupt souls from the world on behalf of Shinigami, the God of Death. Unfortunately, this kind of partnership eventually gave birth to the kishin, demon gods born of fear and the desire for power. One particular technician was so afraid of death, he began devouring human souls that were not corrupt, and in his madness he went so far as to devour his own partner.

The result was the creation of the first kishin and the near destruction of the world. Although Shinigami-sama was able to defeat the threat, the current generation’s purpose is protect humanity by killing souls that have become kishin "eggs."

Culture

The kishin aren’t the only problem: witches are often antagonistic towards Shinigami-sama and his ideals, one other political maelstrom to be found in Soul Eater.

Death City, located in Nevada, United States, is the focal point for much of the action. With the idea of creating an organization bent on peace, Shinigami-sama created a school for weapons and techs: the Shinigami Weapon Meister Vocational School, otherwise known as Shibusen. Technicians have at least one demon weapon for a partner, and every student is regularly given homework and assignments to complete. Usually, these assignments involve tracking down someone whose soul has begun to stray and killing them.

The ultimate goal of each team is to have their weapon devour ninety-nine corrupt souls and one witch’s soul, and in doing so, allow the weapon to become a "Death Scythe." Death Scythe is a broad term for any demon weapon who has reached the pinnacle of their power and earned the right to personally be used by Shinigami-sama. Often, Death Scythes are stationed in different countries and reinforce the peace there.

Abilities

In Soul Eater, a lot of special abilities are grounded in the soul or the "soul wavelength" of the creature in question. The more large or powerful the soul, the stronger the person.

Regular, powerless humans are pretty much the minority, considering the wide arrange of supernatural abilities found in Soul Eater. In terms of power, witches and shinigami seem to currently be the two most powerful races, as the witches possess superior magic, and Shinigami-sama and his son, Death the Kid, are shown to be extremely powerful in their own right, as they’re both gods. Humans with stronger souls than the average person have the potential to become technicians or develop talents of their own, such as "soul perception," which is the ability to sense and/or see the wavelength of someone’s soul, sometimes to the point of being able to tell certain things about that person. Although only human, these people can become very powerful, especially by finding a demon weapon partner and "matching" soul wavelengths.

In short terms, demon weapons act as amplifiers for the technician’s soul power, like an amp for a guitar.

Franken Stein, a human and a tech, is a genius of perception and of manipulating his own soul, having learned how to match his soul’s wavelength to an enemy’s just by looking at them, effectively rendering that person’s spiritual attacks void. He can also fight without the use of a demon weapon because of his immense natural strength and the ability to project his soul outwards into attacks.

The same can be said for certain demon weapons, who possess such powerful souls that they can fight without the use of a tech partner.
