The game has various worlds with different cultures, levels of technology, etc.

WORLD

The story takes place far into the future - 2858 AD, to be exact. There are various worlds with different races and creatures, along with different cultures and levels of technology.

There's a galaxy-spanning government called 'the Pangalactic Federation'. There are also a couple of nations that oppose the federation. One of them is called 'Aldian' where the Federation is at war with, then there are the 'Vendeeni'. Of course, there are also the more neutral plants, Klaus is one of them. The 'terrorist' group Quark has been founded by Klausians.

Most of the game is set on an underdeveloped planet, Ellicoor II. There are more underdeveloped planets in this galaxy, which are protected by the Underdeveloped Planet Preservation Pact (UP3). These planets are protected because simply landing on an underdevloped planet with all kinds of flashy technology will greatly affect it's course of history.

The Federation has also developed a magic-like system called Symbology.

CULTURE
The game is set on more than just one planet. Instead, I'll provide short discriptions of the worlds along with it's cultures.

Hyda VI
Hyda VI is a stable planet known for its mild and tropic climate. It has become a resort world for visitors from all over the galaxy. This planet is later attacked by the Vendeeni in their search for Fayt.

Vanguard III
Vanguard III is an underdeveloped planet with humanoid lifeforms. The planet is around 16th-century development (Earth). It's inhabitants live around the forest areas and live a simplistic life (like farming). Although the people look human, they have enlongated ears and are psysically weaker than Earthlings because of the low gravity.

Elicoor II
Elicoor II is an underdeveloped planet, around 17th-century development (Earth), with few exceptions. There are two continets - Gaitt (where a large bit of the game is spend) and Greeton, a supposedly technologically-advanced nation which is never explored in the game. The continent of Gaitt is divided into three countries; The military superpower Airgyglyph, the matriarchal theocracy Aquaria, and the tribal confederation Sanmite. Airyglyph and Aquaria are at war.

There are certain strange things about Elicoor. Runology is one of them. Runology is a secret art that may only be taught to selected members of the royal Aquarian house. It's practiced by carving sacred runes onto one's body. Runes are designs that can be placed nearly anywhere – on floors, walls, or other places, but the house of Aquaria finds it most practical to inscribe the runes permanently on its members' bodies, especially since runological power decreases exponentially the further a rune is from a runologist. By combining incantations with such runes, runology can be effective in a number of different ways: it can heal, create fire, unlock locks, produce force and create matter out of nothing. It's similar to the Symbology or Heraldry of elsewhere in the Star Ocean universe. Virtually anyone can use runology, as long as both runes and incantations are present. Runological power and strength is based on the level of the runological invocation, the strength of the runologist's psyche, pure experience, and purity of bloodline. (The closer a runologist is genetically to the Holy Mother, Aquaria I, and thus the more concentrated her blood, the better the runologist.)
Even though Elicoorians are a lot like Earthlings, their difference lies in their eyes. Elicoorians have the ability to see certain Runology patterns. Not all humans living on Elicoor possess this ability. Besides that, dragons are also present in this world. Some of them are very intelligent, such as Crosell.

The two most important countries of this planet:

Airyglyph
A military superpower, but because of its harsh climate it's actually a poor country. Much of their income came from mining, but because of both the appearance of dragons and over-mining, the Glyphians have gotten poor. The country exists out of two towns; Airyglyph and Kirlsa. The country's military exists out of three branches; The Dragon Brigade (knights riding on air dragons), the Storm Brigade (knights riding on horse-like creatures called Lums) and the Black Brigade (heavy cavalry knights). It's this country that started the war with Aquaria. They also banned and executed followers of the Church of Apris. Airyglyph is ruled by a King, but it has the captains of the above mentioned brigades as help.

Aquaria
Neighboring country of Airyglyph, this country is very different from Airyglyph. For example, it's a theocracy. The people there believe in various gods, but mostly the Sun God Apris. This country embraces the use of Runology and treats it as a secret art. Unlike Airyglyph, women are also present in its military and comprise a large amount of the . This country is ruled by the Holy Mother, a direct descendant of the original founder of the country.

Albel Nox, Nel Zelpher, Roger S. Huxley, and Adray Lasbard are all Elicoorians.

Moonbase
Moonbase isn't a planet, but a large space station that orbits Luna (Earth's moon). It's complete with habitation and recreation.

Styx
Styx is a mysterious but barren and lifeless planet where the Time Gate is located. It's ruins point to an advanced but extinct civilization. There are various rumors about this planet. A few of them say that it's the entrance to 'Daemonium', world of the demons, or that the Pangalatic Federation houses spaceships within the planet. Fayt and co. use the Time Gate to enter 4D-space.

4-D Space
4-D space is the dimension 'above' the one the main characters in the game live in. It's a very futuristic world, consisting out of eight cities; including Arkives, Gemity and Lost City. The corporation known as The Sphere Company resides here. This company has created the Eternal Sphere, a virtual life simulation nearly everyone in 4D-space participates in viewing. The company's current leader, known as the Owner, is Luther Lansfeld.

Earth
You could call this the 'base' of the Pangalatic Federation. It's a very futuristic and technological advanced planet. It's the planet Fayt and Sophia come from.

Klaus
Homeworld(s) of Cliff Fittir and Mirage Koas. There are several Klaus planets. Klausians are known to be physically stronger than Earthlings. That's partly because of the higher gravity on the planet. Klaus isn't part of the Pangalatic Federation, and likes to remain neutral. The founders of the 'terrorist' group Quark are Klausians as well. Even though the Federation likes to say they're terrorists, they only help planets who wish to remain independent.

Klausians are marked by the tattooed lines on their necks.

Vendeen
Homeworld of the Vendeeni, a race evolved from sharks. They have advanced technology, but the federation doesn't know much about it since the Vendeeni refuse to cooperate with them. Somehow, they found out about 4D-space and wanted to use Fayt to save their own hides.

There are many more worlds mentioned in the game. But it would be insane to mention them all.

Powers
There's a form of magic in this universe called "Symbology" (called 'Runology' on Ellicoor). As the name implies, it works with symbols. In order for someone to use this, this person needs to have this symbol with him/her at all times. Many use tattoos in order to do this. Not everyone can do Symbology.

Characters can also do various moves, but I'm unsure whether to put them into the 'magic' category or not. The characters use some form of energy, but it's not the same as Symbology.

STORY
The game starts on a resort-planet called Hyda IV where the main character, Fayt Leingod, is on vacation with his parents and his friend Sophia Esteed. Suddenly the planet is attacked by an unknown force (later revealed as the Vendeeni). Everyone has to evacuate, and Fayt gets separated from his family and from Sophia. He winds up at the underdevelopped planet Vanguard III. There he meets Cliff Fittir, a member of the anti-federation organization Quark. Cliff has been looking for Fayt, and for some reason Quark's leader wants to speak with him and save his father from the Vendeeni. The company leaves the planet, but they are attacked again by the Vendeeni.

They manage to escape but get shipwrecked at the underdeveloped planet, Elicoor II. They are forced to cooperate with Aquaria, the country at war with Airyglyph. However, the Vendeeni have found Fayt and launch an attack at both Aquaria and Airyglyph. Both countries don't stand a chance against such technology. Meanwhile, the leader of Quark, Maria Traydor, has arrived on Elicoor II and it's revealed why the Vendeeni want Fayt so badly, and why Maria wants to talk with Fayt's dad so badly. Maria and Fayt have both been scientifically altered, meaning they have strange powers. Both Airyglyph and Aquaria realize that handing over Fayt to the Vendeeni isn't an option, so they decide to cooperate to create a deverision in order to get the group off the planet. While they were carrying out their plan, the Vendeeni-ships are destroyed by an unknown power-source. This power-source declares war with Earth. Creatures who call themselves "The Executioneers" appeared and destroyed planets in the name of 'the Creator'. Quark in the meantime manages to save Fayt's father, but he gets killed in the progress. Before he died, he told the group to go to Moonbase.

When the group arrive at Moonbase and investigate the records, they find out the truth behind the appearance of the Executioners. Some time ago, explorers were investigating the uncharted planet Styx. They stumbled on an artifact called 'The Time Gate'. This Time Gate began to speak and told the investigators that they were going to be eliminated because they angered the "Creator" of their universe. The investigators hurried back and began to study, and they soon figured out this 'prophecy' came from another plane of existence; 4D-space. They also found out that symbology might be used to gain entrance, and that this might be their last hope for survival of this universe. The scientist decided to use their own offspring; Fayt Leingod, Maria Traydor and Sophia Esteed. They were symbologically altered to be able to gain acces to 4D-space in order to stop this 'Creator'. The group decides to go to Styx and enter 4D-space in order to save their universe.

Upon entering, the group learns that their universe is called 'The Eternal Sphere', a game-like virtual simulation developed by the Owner, Luther Lansfeld, the owner of the Sphere Company. However, Eternal Sphere is not just a computer-game any longer; it has developed factors that make it a reality on itself. The group must find a way to stop Luther from deleting the Eternal Sphere. They succeed in defeating Luther, but they couldn't stop him from erasing the entire data from the Eternal Sphere. But because it became a reality on it's own, Luther couldn't delete the individual character data, thus making it possible for the Eternal Sphere to survive.
