Backstory

SPOILERS UP TO AND INCLUDING THRILLER BARK

Chopper was born as a reindeer in the snowy country of Drum. Because of his unique blue nose, he was shunned by the other reindeer and forced to walk alone at the back of the herd. To make matters worse, while he was still a young reindeer, he found a strange-looking fruit. This fruit happened to be one of a number of "Devil Fruits" of the Zoan classification, which grant whoever eats them the power and form of an animal in exchange for forever being hated by the sea and unable to swim. Unaware that it was the "Hito Hito no Mi" ["Human Human Fruit"], Chopper ate it and found himself changed: he was now a human reindeer.

To his herd, this sudden change to a strange form was unacceptable. He was considered a monster and driven away, alone and outcast. With his newfound power, he tried to take human form, but his transformation was imperfect because of his blue nose. The people of the villages in Drum mistook him for a snow monster and would shoot at him when he approached, forcing him to flee. This continued for some time: unable to return to the herd and feared by the humans, he wandered alone. But one day, after being shot by humans, he met a man who wasn't afraid of him: a quack doctor called Hiruluk. Despite Chopper's hostility, Hiruluk was concerned about the reindeer's injuries and was adamant about treating him. He removed his clothes to prove to the half-beast that he was unarmed and who not shoot him. Chopper, curious about the human who was unafraid of him, silently accepted Hiruluk's kindness.

Chopper was afraid that Hiruluk would hate him if the man learned that he could speak, so he remained silent for the first few days that he stayed with the doctor. When he did finally speak, he was pleased to discover that Hiruluk did not think him a monster. On the same day that he first spoke to Hiruluki, he was also given a name by the doctor: "Tony Tony Chopper," because he was a reindeer ["tonakai" in Japanese] whose antlers looked strong enough to chop down trees.

Chopper stayed with Hiruluk for a year, during which time the two became good friends. Chopper learned about the world beyond Drum from Hiruluk, who told him that one day he should go see the world for himself. Hiruluk also shared his beliefs and ideals with Chopper: that the skull and crossbones flag of pirates is a symbol of faith; that there are miracles in this world; that there is no disease that cannot be cured; that even a country that is "sick" like Drum can be cured. He told Chopper the story of a man who had once been cured of a disease that doctors claimed was incurable by the miraculous sight of cherry blossoms covering a mountain, and shared that he was working on an experiment to create a miracle to save Drum.

When they had their first argument after fleeing from a mob of angry villagers, Chopper was also given a present for the first time: a pink hat, with an X shape on it, similar to the hat Hiruluk himself wore. Chopper has worn the hat ever since.

One year after Hiruluk first took in Chopper to treat his injuries, the doctor proclaimed him cured and threw him out. He forcibly drove Chopper away, ignoring the reindeer's pleas to be accepted back into his home and even ignoring the injury Chopper had given himself in an attempt to get the doctor to take him back in for treatment. After he shot at the reindeer and told him to never return, Chopper finally left, heartbroken. However, Chopper was still attached to Hiruluk, the only friend he'd ever had. He followed the doctor when he went to visit another doctor: a woman named Kureha. Eavesdropping on their conversation, Chopper learned the truth of why he'd been driven out: Hiruluk was the man that he'd once told Chopper about, and his disease had returned. He didn't have long to live.

With this realization came Chopper's first attempt to save someone. Unwilling to lose his only friend, he rushed to Hiruluk's home and looked through his books to locate a mushroom he'd once heard about, and set off to find it. The journey to obtain the mushroom for Hiruluk was difficult, and Chopper had to find the courage to face his old herd when he encountered them on the way. A week later, Chopper returned to Hiruluk's house, battered and bruised and with his left antler broken, but victorious: he had the mushroom. He gave it to Hiruluk, who recognized it instantly, and declared that even though he was a reindeer, he wanted to be a doctor.

After Hiruluk treated Chopper's injuries and ate a soup prepared from the mushroom, something that he'd been waiting on for years occurred: his long-running experiment had produced a successful reaction. Assuring Chopper that he was feeling better and that Chopper would become a great doctor, he left the house, taking the product of his experiment with him. It was the last time that Chopper saw him alive. Dr. Kureha came to Hiruluk's house during his absence, demanding to know the whereabouts of the quack from Chopper, whom she had learned about from Hiruluk. When Chopper told her that Hiruluk had been cured from the mushroom he'd gotten for him, he was forced to learn a harsh truth: Hiruluk was going to die. The mushroom he'd worked so hard to get was actually a deadly poison. Unwilling to believe Kureha, Chopper insisted that the mushroom was a panacea since it had been marked in the book with a skull and crossbones, the symbol Hiruluk had held in high regard.

From Kureha, Chopper learned the true meaning of the symbol, and she lectured him: there is no such thing as a medicine that can cure every disease, or there would be no need for doctors; to save people, you need to have knowledge and skill; kindness alone cannot save anyone.

Realizing the truth of what had happened, he ran off to Drum Castle, where Kureha said that Hiruluk must have gone to die. Chopper arrived at the castle just after Hiruluk chose to end his own life by blowing himself up, and was horrified to hear the king laugh at Hiruluk's death. Enraged, Chopper charged forward, intent on avenging Hiruluk even if it meant his own death, but his recklessness was stopped by a man by the name of Dalton. Chopper took Hiruluk's hat—the only thing left of him—and fled. He returned to Kureha and, after they fashioned a grave for Hiruluk, Chopper asked her to teach him to be a doctor. He studied medicine under Kureha for five years; it is likely that he also learned how to read from her rather than earlier. He also developed a medicine called the Rumble Ball during this time, which granted him a greater range of transformation from his Devil Fruit power. During his experimentation with the Rumble Ball, he had an accident that turned him into a monster and caused him to level a village. He has no memory of the event itself, remembering only what Kureha told him of it and her lecture about needing to know his limits before acting. After the country of Drum was attacked by the pirate Blackbeard and the king fled, Chopper and Kureha moved into the castle where Hiruluk had died, and raised his skull and crossbones flag in place of the country's.

Five years after Hiruluk's death, Chopper met the Straw Hat Pirates. He at first thought they were just like all the other humans who thought him to be a monster, but he couldn't help but be curious about them because of how much Hiruluk had liked pirates.

When the king of Drum returned to reclaim his castle, Chopper saw the crew in a different light—particularly their captain, Luffy. Luffy protected Hiruluk's flag, and his words to the king of Drum echoed Hiruluk's own to Chopper from years earlier. He fought alongside Luffy to drive the king and his advisors away, but when Luffy asked Chopper to join them, he refused, clinging to his defense that he couldn't be friends with humans because he was a talking reindeer and had a blue nose. When Luffy continued to insist, however, Chopper made up his mind and agreed to go with them, despite thinking Kureha was angry with him for the decision. As he left Drum, he finally got to see the results of Hiruluk's experiment, when Kureha fired the dust the doctor had created into the clouds to tint the falling snow pink.

Chopper has been the doctor of the Straw Hat crew ever since, laughing with them and fighting alongside them. They helped Princess Vivi free her country from Crocodile, one of the Shichibukai. They found an ancient golden city in the land of the sky, Skypeia. Chopper was briefly forced to join the Foxy Pirates when he stolen away in a game called the Davy Backfight, but was returned to the Straw Hat crew after their victory in the second round. He fought bravely alongside the Straw Hat crew, the Franky Family, and the shipwrights of Water 7 against the World Government to help save his fellow crewmate, Nico Robin.
During the fight against the government at Enies Lobby, in desperation Chopper took three Rumble Balls, the same dose that had caused him to once rampage in Drum, for the second time in his life. He turned into a monster and attacked both friend and foe alike until Franky knocked him into the ocean to drain his power. He has no memory of what happened, but Zoro told him what had occurred afterwards. [Note: Zoro's talk with Chopper is never shown, but Zoro told the reindeer that he'd explain later when Chopper questioned why he was unable to move when he awoke.]

When the crew returned to Water 7 after rescuing Robin, they learned that they had all received bounties from the recent events. Chopper was extremely dissatisfied with his miniscule bounty of 50 beli, which had been given because the Marines mistook him as a pet. After leaving Water 7 in their new ship, the Thousand Sunny, the Straw Hat crew found their ship captured by another when they passed through a section of sea known as the Florian Triangle. Exploring the haunted island-ship of Thriller Bark, Chopper was able to meet a famous doctor he had idolized and respected: Doktor Hogback. He defended Hogback and his zombie research from Nami and Usopp's skepticism for a time, until he learned the truth about the doctor's work: he wasn't bringing the dead back to life at all. Through the power of one of the Shichibukai, Gecko Moria, Hogback was inserting stolen shadows into corpse marionettes to reanimate them in a mockery of life and humanity. Bitterly disappointed in Hogback, he lectured the man and was willing to kill him for the good of mankind were it not for the interruption of the monstrous zombie Oz.

The crew worked together to defeat Oz and his master, Gecko Moria. Chopper in particular used his medical knowledge to help the maximum damage done to Oz in order to bring him down, since the zombie was incapable of feeling his own injuries.

Moria's defeat came just in time: three of the Straw Hat crew's own number (Zoro, Sanji, and Robin) would have died were it not for their stolen shadows returning. They were granted no time to rest, however; another of the Shichibukai, Bartholomew Kuma, had come to Thriller Bark. Kuma offered to spare the crew in exchange for the head of their captain, but he was vehemently refused by the crew, all of whom were willing to fight to the death to defend Luffy.

Kuma effortlessly dispatched the crew, knocking the majority of them unconscious with a single attack…

…And Chopper awoke to find himself in Landel's.

Personality
Chopper acts very childlike at times, despite his determination to be a man. While this is likely due to the fact that he was originally an animal, it is possible that it's also a result of his limited social experience: until he met the Straw Hat crew, he had only associated with two humans.

Chopper is honest, even when he's not trying to be. He's an open book: he's horrible at hiding his feelings, and even worse at physically hiding. His attempts to hide (in such a way where he'd be able to peek at what's happening) generally end reversed, with all but a small portion of his body (generally part of his head) completely visible. He'll usually attempt to correct his technique after it's pointed out to him, but by that time, he's already been spotted.

Having never left Drum before joining the Straw Hat crew, Chopper is highly curious. He tends to watch over the side of the ship as they sail, particularly when they're near land. Whenever he's presented with something unfamiliar, he will always ask about it. He's easily impressed, especially by his fellow crewmates, new and unfamiliar things, or impressive feats.

Chopper is also extremely gullible. He'll believe almost anything he's told (for at least a little while), as long as it doesn't contradict anything he knows to be fact (or seems too bizarre for even him to swallow). Included in some of the more outrageous things he's believed are all of Usopp's varied lies, and the very curvy Nami's claim that she was really a man named "Namizou" (to stop the rampage of a jealous Thriller Bark zombie). One thing that Chopper amazingly did not believe turned out to be true: Franky is stronger if he has cola.

The ease with which he believes other's words can occasionally lead to radical changes in his behavior. Upon seeing the ghost ship that Brook was on, Chopper was scared until Usopp announced that the whole thing must have been a dream; he was much calmer afterwards, convinced that it was a dream. Sometimes, he'll also take figures of speech literally; an example of this is when Sanji says he has a strange feeling (about Robin's disappearance), Chopper asks if he should give him a medical exam.

Chopper looks up to his older friends as role models. He has a tendency to copy their behavior when he's unsure about a situation. For example, he had never met Nico Robin when she had been their enemy Miss All-Sunday, but he copies the surprise of the rest of the crew when she appears on their ship, despite being confused about why they're surprised. He is also quick to listen to their advice. During the Davy Backfight, when Chopper is crying about not wanting to join the Foxy Pirates after he was lost to them during the first game, he quickly stops when Zoro tells him that if he's a real man, he should watch quietly while they crew wins him back.

Because of his desire to act like a "real man," Chopper also has a tendency to "talk tough," particularly when he's been complimented. Despite being very visibly happy about compliments, smiling and practically dancing for joy, he'll claim that the compliment doesn't make him happy and hurl insults. Although this usually follows compliments, he will also act tough when he's trying to be brave. Again during the Davy Backfight, when Sanji referred to Chopper as an emergency food source after Zoro's words stopped his crying, the reindeer acted tough, saying "Cook me! Fry me! I don't care; I'm a man!"

Chopper admires bravery, but he himself is quite timid. He's easily frightened (especially by ghosts, zombies, and monster), and is quick to cry. However, he can be courageous when he makes up his mind to stand up for himself and his friends and fight for what he believes in. He's hard-working, and will always try to do his best.

It's possible that Chopper doesn't even realize when he's acting brave, because his self-esteem is rather low. Though notably less so since joining the Straw Hat crew, Chopper has been self-conscious ever since he was young because of the blue nose he was born with. When he first meets the Straw Hat Pirates, he mentions his nose several times as one of the reasons that he can't be friends with humans, despite the crew not seeming to care about it.

Chopper cares very much for his friends and loves being with them, but he hasn't forgotten the loneliness he had felt in Drum. He's terrified of losing any one of his nakama, and even more afraid of being the reason for that loss. When Robin disappeared while they were in Water 7, Chopper worried that he had made her mad by running ahead to visit a book store and that she had left because of it. Later, when Usopp tried to rejoin the Straw Hat crew, Chopper was the only one who didn't ignore him (prior to his apology), and he tried to get the others to notice that Usopp had come back.

He's also afraid of letting his friends down or disappointing them; when Zoro and Usopp (as his alter-ego Sogeking) relied on Chopper to find the key the handcuffs they'd been locked together with while in Enies Lobby, he was determined to live up to their expectations and get the key no matter what.

Chopper is also determined to carry out his duty as the ship's doctor… even though he will occasionally, in a panic, forget that he's a doctor and try to call for one when someone is badly injured. He's concerned about the crew's health and wellbeing, as well as that of the people they've met in their travels. Even when Sanji forbids him from tending to Usopp's injuries after he and Luffy fought each other in Water 7, he does what little he can by leaving bandages and medicine next to Usopp's battered body. He wants to save people, even when he cannot. His desire to save others is not limited to his medical practice: even though he cannot swim, he will often jump into the water without hesitation in attempts to save Luffy when the Straw Hat captain falls in.

Since doctors in his world do not have an oath similar to our Hippocratic Oath (or, at least, since he doesn't follow one if they do; both his teachers were rather forceful, to say the least), he has no problem with doing harm when necessary. Chopper has even used his medical knowledge to maximize damage against opponents in battle… most notably when he directed the crew to straighten Oz's spine when they fought the giant monster in Thriller Bark. However, despite his willingness to fight, he still holds life to be sacred. He is outraged at Hogback's zombie research, not because the doctor tried to resurrect the dead, but because his results could not be called life. He holds to the belief that doctors are meant to help others, rather than themselves.

Seven-Transformation Reindeer (In canon and at Landel's)

Appearance
In the canon, Chopper's usual appearance is that of a small, anthropomorphic reindeer, with a large head, round body, skinny limbs, light brown fur, and antlers. Both his hands and feet end in cloven hooves, which he can manipulate like fingers. Despite being 15, his size and the child-like proportions of his body make him seem younger. Chopper's appearance can change because of both the Devil Fruit he'd eaten and the Rumble Ball he created.

Brain Point: His usual appearance, described above. He is approximately two to two and a half feet tall in this form. His hands and feet are hooves, but he walks on two legs. He has animal ears and antlers. Chopper is sometimes mistaken for a tanuki in this form.Eight Transformations

Walk Point: Appears to be a normal reindeer, but with a blue nose. He walks on four legs, and his feet are hooves.

Heavy Point: His most human appearance. He could be thought to be a large, hairy human in this form were it not for retaining his blue nose and a somewhat bestial face. He is somewhere between six and a half to seven feet tall in this form. He walks on two legs, and both his hands and feet are human. He has human ears and no antlers. In his home country, he was mistaken for a snow monster when villagers saw him in this form; in other countries, people have thought he's a gorilla.

Jumping Point: His upper body is lithe and human, with human arms and hands. His legs are that of a reindeer, with hooves. His head is more human, with human ears and no antlers. He jumps with two legs.

Arm Point: His arms become very muscular. He walks on two legs; his feet are human and his hands are hooves. He has described his hooves in this form to be steel. His head is more reindeer-based, and he has animal ears and antlers.

Horn Point: His overall body type is similar to that of Jumping Point, with human hands and hooves for feet, but his head is reindeer-based. Although his arms are human, he walks on all fours. His shoulders are muscular, and his antlers are large, with sharp tips.

Guard Point: His size and body type appears to be similar to Brain Point, but his fur grows out to protect him. He stands on two legs, and only his face and legs are visible through the fur. He has antlers.

Monster (Point): Grown to be at least twenty feet tall, Chopper has large, sharp antlers. He stands on two legs with hooves, has human arms and hands, and has a reindeer's head. Unlike other forms with human hands, his fingers are dark in this form. He cannot speak in this form, making only incoherent cries. Zoro has noted that Chopper almost looks like he's dying when he's in this form.

In all forms, he has black eyes and a blue animal nose (that looks more like a dog or cat's nose than a real reindeer's). Also, in any form with antlers, his left antler has a metal plate wrapped around it. He always wears a pink hat with a white X shape on it; his ears and antlers (expect in his more humanoid forms) go through the hat above its brim. He wears a pair of shorts in all forms, and sometimes wears shirts and coats. He has been shown to wear upper garments in both Brain Point and Heavy Point (a long coat for Brain Point becomes a small shirt for Heavy Point), but generally removes them before taking a Rumble Ball to access Jumping, Arm, Horn, and Guard Points. He is usually seen with a backpack (with the same cross symbol as his hat), which holds his medical supplies.

As a human in Landel's, Chopper is small, with tanned skin, black eyes, and mousy brown hair worn in a shaggy (almost fur-like) style, with a pair of tufts at the sides that curl upward. Though taller than his usual form in the canon, he is still quite short: only a little taller than four feet. He has a button nose, with a blue spot on its tip. He has a scar behind his left ear and below his hairline, but it is hidden by his hair.

Abilities
Chopper studied medicine under Dr. Kureha for five years after Dr. Hiruluk's death, and has accumulated a vast amount of medical knowledge. He knows how to treat injuries and can mix medicines from plants. However, his medical knowledge is limited to the world he comes from: their plants, animals, remedies, and practices. As such, he is not necessarily familiar with most medicines found in the institute.

The Devil Fruit that Chopper ate gave him human intelligence and the ability to change between human and reindeer. He has gained a number of forms because of this ability, each with its own power. It's worth noting here that like all those who have powers from Devil Fruits, Chopper is completely powerless in sea water or when touching something with the same nature, such as kairouseki ("sea stone"). He is also unable to swim because of this.

The Devil Fruits of the Zoan family usually grant three forms (Brain Point, Walk Point, and Heavy Point, below). However, the "Rumble Ball" that Chopper developed allows him to access four additional forms (plus an accidental fifth). The effects of the Rumble Ball last for three minutes, and he can only access the additional forms during that time. If he takes a second Rumble Ball within six hours of the first, he is unable to control which form he changes to any time he transforms. If he takes a third, he turns into a monster. Details on each form and his attacks are as follows:

Brain Point: Chopper is able to utilize his intelligence better in Brain Point than in his other forms. It's worth noting that after using a Rumble Ball, Chopper can use an ability called "Scope" in this form to pinpoint weaknesses.
  • Scope: After taking a Rumble Ball, Chopper can use "Scope" to scan his opponent to pinpoint a weakness.
Walk Point: Chopper is more or less a regular reindeer in Walk Point. He can run faster than humans can in this form, as well as jump further distances without hurting his legs. In canon, he has been shown jumping off a mountain while pulling a sleigh in this form. His sense of smell is best in Walk Point, making it his favored choice when tracking.

Heavy Point: Chopper becomes stronger in this form. He also uses the height (over six and a half feet tall) of the form to his advantage.
  • Heavy Gong: A strong punch, usually to the face.
  • Robiccho Suplex: A combination attack with Robin. Chopper grabs an opponent, and Robin sprouts a tower of legs under Chopper's feet to add height to a suplex move.
  • Frapper Gong: A combination attack with Franky. Chopper and Franky simultaneously punch an opponent (in the face).
Jumping Point: A Rumble Ball form. His legs are powerful in this form and allow him to jump long distances. He can jump further in Jumping Point than in Walk Point, and can also make high vertical jumps.

Arm Point: A Rumble Ball form. Arm Point is his most powerful one in terms of physical strength; he says his hooves can crush stone. Because of the form's destructive power, it tends to be Chopper's favored form of the four granted by the Rumble Ball. Most of his named attacks are in this form.
  • Kokutei Roseo: Chopper punches his opponent with such force that it leaves an imprint of his hoof. The imprint appears similar to a sakura petal.
  • Kokutei Cross: A two-hoofed strike twice as strong as Kokutei Roseo, leaving an X-shaped imprint.
  • Kokutei Roseo Metel: The attack is set up similarly to Kokutei Cross, but Chopper runs or jumps towards the opponent and hits a barrage of Kokutei Roseo strikes against him. Each strike leaves behind a sakura-shaped hoof print.
  • Army De L'air Kokutei Roseo Shoot: A combination attack with Sanji. Chopper jumps onto Sanji's legs and is propelled toward an opponent by Sanji's kick. The force of the Kokutei Roseo strike leaves a giant hoof imprint.
Horn Point: A Rumble Ball form. His shoulders and upper arms are muscular, but are used to add power to the use of his giant, sharp antlers. He can easily toss opponents with his antlers in this form.
  • Roseo Colonnade: Chopper chases his opponents and tosses them into the air with his antlers. The thrown opponents land with their heads embedded in the ground and their bodies sticking straight up. Best against multiple opponents.
  • Hissatsu Usoccho Hammer Suisei (Sure Kill UsoCho Hammer Comet): A combination attack with Usopp. Usopp uses a large rubberband with Chopper's antlers to create a slingshot for the Usopp Hammer attack.
Guard Point: A Rumble Ball form. Chopper's fur grows out and acts as a fluffy shield. Although the shield is strong, it's not impenetrable.

Monster (Point): Although it is not officially one of Chopper's "Point" transformations, if Chopper uses three Rumble Balls within a six hour period, he turns into a monster. He is extremely strong in this form, easily able to tear apart a building without exerting much effort, but he loses all sense of self and is unable to tell friend from foe. Unlike other forms accessed via the Rumble Ball, there is no time limit imposed on this form; he's stuck as a monster until he loses his power to the sea… or dies. The form places a huge strain on his body because of how much energy it requires. Chopper is unable to move for a period of time while recovering from this form.

At Landel's, Chopper's human form is by "default" the equivalent of Brain Point, and he is unable to physically transform to either Walk Point or Heavy Point. However, when he attempts to transform, he is still able to access a portion of Heavy Point's strength and Walk Point's speed.

His speed in Walk Point, though still faster than the average human, is reduced to that of a quick sprinter, and he is be able to jump a little further (approximately the distance of a good long jump). His strength in Heavy Point is equivalent to that of an adult man in good physical shape. Jumping, Arm, Horn, and Guard Points (along with Monster) are unavailable due to a lack of Rumble Balls. Even though he's not in the body/bodies he's used to, Chopper retains his sea-related weaknesses: the inability to swim and a complete loss of power.

Chopper also possesses a keen sense of smell. While this sense is dulled at Landel's, it is still sharper than a human's.
