Terence, this is stupid stuff

Personality and History
Usopp wearing the famed Straw HatUsopp is usually friendly and outgoing. He is a chronic liar, and his name is actually a set of puns (Aesop from Aesop's Fables, and ウソツキ [usotsuki], liar in Japanese.) His long nose also seems to be a reference to Pinocchio.

History
Usopp's father left home when Usopp was younger than six, in order to become a pirate. Within a year, Usopp's mother died of illness. Growing up alone, Usopp learned to take care of himself on a practical level, but also became a bit of a village troublemaker. Known for his lies, at age twelve he formed three of the younger children in the village into his "Usopp Pirate Crew," and led them on imaginative and purely fictional adventures. When Luffy's crew landed on Usopp's island, however, Usopp had to face real pirates and eventually decided to become a true pirate like his father, leaving behind his friends and his sweetheart Kaya. Usopp's lies have continued since joining Luffy's crew, although they're usually a source of entertainment rather than a serious problem. Usopp still refers to himself as "the great Captain Usopp" and tells stories of the fantastic battles and adventures he actually hasn't had.

Personality
Prior to meeting Luffy, Usopp's ambition had only been expressed in his tall tales to Kaya and the children that made up his "Usopp Pirate Crew." When actually confronted with real danger, Usopp's first instinct was to run. Meeting Luffy was the motivation that made him decide to go out to sea and become a true pirate, although he'd planned to go out on his own and was surprised (but thrilled) to be invited along with Luffy's crew.

Usopp still tells plenty of lies, and also likes to embellish the actual events of his daily life; the fact that his crewmates know his lies to be untrue doesn't stop him. To a certain degree, these ongoing lies are a compensation for the strength and bravery he still lacks; unlike most of Luffy's crew, he does not have inhuman physical strength or an unmatched talent. When he's safe, Usopp loves to tell stories and play with the other members of the crew, especially Chopper and Luffy. In danger, Usopp would rather run than face a confrontation, but there are times that even he knows that he has to stand up and fight... when a friend is in danger or when someone mocks the dreams of his crewmates. It is also important to note that, while Usopp considers himself very weak and he is one of the weakest of his crewmates, he has fought a variety of monsters and strange but powerful enemies while with the Strawhats.

Usopp usually hides his insecurities behind his naturally cheerful attitude, and he loves to party, dance and sing with his crewmates. He also likes small practical jokes and sometimes imitates his friends or his enemies for a laugh. Usopp and Luffy together probably cause the majority of the trouble on their ship, although Usopp often drags their impressionable and young crewmate Chopper along.

For the Telepaths in the Audience

Usopp has very little experience with mental powers, and would not know how to shield himself even if he wanted to. He may have some natural/accidental defense, however, due to his nature as a liar and storyteller who usually casts himself in the starring role. To comfort himself in difficult times, he sometimes retreats into the "Captain Usopp" persona, which is not a true disassociative personality but may still provide a bit of a jarring contrast. Beneath that frail persona, Usopp's surface thoughts and feelings are obvious, and anything difficult to determine would have to be so deeply entrenched that Usopp himself is not aware of it.

In recent chapters of the manga, Usopp has channelled one of his personas (one invented after "Captain Usopp") to the point of seriously changing his stature in battle when pretending to be this person, and carrying on an argument with 'himself.' Although this takes place well after where this Usopp comes from in the timeline of One Piece, the potential for such a serious divide is there.

Usopp - Pirates are Gangsters with Boats
In Landel's

First Day (Landel's Day 24): Usopp met with his roommate, Kazuo Kiriyama of Battle Royale (who later vanished,) and after raiding the Game Room with him to obtain some dice and game playing pieces, he faced a battle with the brainwashed Hakkai. After Hakkai let him go to deal with Amaterasu, Usopp fled into the cafeteria where he met Yuber. Yuber and Usopp became allies, and after journeying into the kitchen and the pantry and having a brief glimpse at Pyramid Head, they returned to Usopp's room where Usopp began work on what weapons he could develop from his spoils.
After that, Usopp and Yuber met up with Kazuo again and they went to the greenhouse. There, Usopp broke glass and very slightly hurt his feet, but got some shards of glass to use.
Second Day (Landel's Day 25): Usopp met his captain Luffy at breakfast, which raised his mood significantly, even though he has learned that Luffy is weaker than usual. Lunchtime was spent in the company of Ashton Anchors, and despite a harrowing encounter with a magical eyeball it was generally enjoyed.
The evening of Day 25 was especially eventful, as Usopp met with Luffy and began a raid on the men's bathrooms, in search of a treasure described by Mr. Radio. With the help of the ninja Sai, they obtained the treasure--a soldering iron--and spent the rest of the evening trying to recover from their harrowing journey into a bathroom full of leeches. Usopp now considers Sai his ally as well.

Powers and Abilities

Unlike most of the Strawhat Pirate crew, Usopp does not have extraordinary strength or monsterousUsopp, armed with slingshot traits (unless you count the nose.) He tries to make up for his weakness by invention, using his creative mind and dexterity to improvise weapons and tactics. He has excellent aim, and his main weapon is a slingshot and self-devised trick ammunition. With the right slingshot, he is capable of firing accurately at a distance exceeding firearms in the OP world. Later in the series, he obtains some unusual items called Dials, which essentially draw in 'something' (sound, gas, force) and then expel it at will. Using his stars and dials, along with other convinient items, he manages to hold his own in battles.

Usopp usually refers to his ammunition as "pachinko" even when they can't possibly be the small metal spheres used in the famous Pachinko game, and he has also called his slingshot weapons "pachinko." His small green slingshot is called "Galaxy Pachinko," (銀河パチンコ) although he rarely refers to it as such.

Even though Usopp does not have the weapons and tools listed here, he will do his best to try and make replacements (since he devised all of them for himself in the first place, aside from the slingshot.) This list is meant as a helpful guide to the sort of tactics and weapon choices Usopp uses, as well as a preview in case he should get his hands on some of them again. A few of the attacks, such as "Usopp Spell," don't require equipment.

List of Attacks and Special Moves

Since coming to Landel's, Usopp has developed some new moves based around the equipment available to him.

Usopp Light ウソップ ライト
Usopp uses his flashlight as a bludgeoning device. The usual first attack for many Landel's patients.

Usopp Pan ウソップ パン
Usopp uses a frying pan he obtained in the kitchen as a bludgeoning device. This is more effective than Usopp Light due to the larger size of the pan and the greater mass. Usopp's pan can also be used as a shield.

Usopp Pan Scoop ウソップ パン スクープ
A variation on Usopp Pan, instead of attempting to crush his enemy Usopp attempts to scoop the enemy away, flinging them from him. This is an attack which can only be performed with a slightly round weapon, such as a pan.

General List of Materials

Usopp has stolen a number of items, along with using the items available from his room, and he has found a 'treasure' placed by Mr. Radio. The items include: Two frying pans, one container of ketchup, two cans of juice, chili powder, flour, one small blade unscrewed from devices in the kitchen, his flashlight, a complete compliment of pens, a slightly used notebook, most of his clothes and underwear, one hand-held soldering iron.

Items he has created/tampered with include: Two wooden spoons carved into a claw-like shape on one end with sharp points at the base; 'stars' made of flour mixed with a small amount of chili, folded carefully into paper; 'stars' made entirely of chili powder.

Canon Attacks and Moves

Hissatsu Namari Boshi (Sure-Kill Lead Star) 必殺鉛星
Usopp shoots a small lead pachinko ball with enough force to knock a normal man down.

Hissatsu Kemuri Boshi (Sure-Kill Smoke Star) 必殺煙星
Usopp shoots a hollow pachinko ball filled with smoke powder, similar to a ninja tactic for escape or confusion.

Hissatsu Kayaku Boshi (Sure-Kill Gunpowder Star) 必殺火薬星
Usopp shoots a hollow pachinko filled with gunpowder, which explodes on impact. If fired to the head, this should knock a normal man unconscious or possibly kill him.

Hissatsu Kaen Boshi (Sure-Kill Flame Star) 必殺火炎星
Usopp shoots a kayaku boshi ammunition against an opponent or into an area that has been prepped via some sort of flammable material (he has used alcohol and gas in the past.) The resulting explosion is much larger and the fire will continue until it is put out or burns itself out.

Hissatsu Tamago Boshi (Sure-Kill Egg Star) 必殺卵星
Usopp fires an egg via slingshot. If the egg has gone rotten, this can be rather unpleasant, because, ew, rotten egg. This can also be used to distract animals by offering an alternate, less Usopp-like food source.

Creating a Tabasco Boshi
Hissatsu Tabasco Boshi (Sure-Kill Tabasco Star)
必殺タバスコ星
Usopp shoots a hollow pachinko filled with concentrated tabasco sauce, preferably into the eyes or mouth of his opponent. The effect is painful, even to someone who'll normally eat anything (such as Luffy.)

Hissatsu Ketchup Boshi (Sure-Kill Ketchup Star)
必殺ケチャップ星
Usopp uses a hollow pachinko filled with ketchup on himself, sometimes by surreptitiously slipping it into his mouth and biting down to release the load of ketchup. He then pretends to be wounded or dead, to either escape further injury or to lull his enemy into complacency.

Makibishi Jigoku (Caltrop Hell) 撒菱地獄
Usopp places caltrops on the ground to slow his opponant's advancement, or tricks and herds his opponent into falling onto them. Although they aren't deadly, they are sharp and painful.

Usopp Hammer ウソップ ハンマー
Usopp beats the enemy with a hammer, ideally until they stop moving.

Usopp Wagomu (Usopp Rubber band) ウソップ輪ゴム
Usopp aims a rubber band at his opponent, hoping to make the enemy flinch or blink. This is particularly effective against very stupid enemies. He sometimes actually shoots the rubber band as well.

Usopp Pound ウソップ パウンド
Usopp wields a fake 5-Ton Hammer constructed from two frying pans, a wooden stick, vinyl covering, and other supports, ultimately weighing around two kilograms. On each side of the hammer, the label "5t" is proudly emblazoned, meant to terrify anyone who sees him carrying it. He attempts to pound his enemy over the head with it, adding pain to terror (although the effect can only work so long, since a person will realize the device hitting them hurts less like five tons of steel and more like a frying pan.)

Usopp AaaAAaaaAAaa (I am not putting that in Japanese >.>; )
This is a device Usopp created to wrap around his waist, then fire a grappling hook to help him swing across long distances or reach high places. "AaaAAaaaAAaa" is also the noise he makes while using it. Unfortunately, he cannot disconnect the rope from his waist easily, and so he tends to smack face-first into his targets.

Octopakutsu (Octopushoes) オクトパクツ
These are shoes which are shaped like octopus tentacles on the bottom, including suckers. Wearing these, Usopp can climb at unusual angles and on difficult surfaces.

Usopp Noise ウソップ ノイズ
Usopp creates some awful sound to distract his enemy, usually by drawing fingernails down a portable blackboard.

Usopp Spell ウソップ スペル
Usopp describes extremely uncomfortable things, such as having papercuts on the skin between your thumb and fingers, razorblades slicing your gums, misstepping so you accidentally land on the side of your foot and then twist it... that sort of thing. This is another distraction attack.

Impact DialImpact インパクト
Although Usopp gained a number of "Dials" during his time in Skypiea (including the Breath Dial which can intake and emit gas and the Sound Dial which can record and replay sounds) the most important is likely the Impact Dial. The Impact Dial can absorb almost any blow, keeping the force within until the dial is triggered to release. The force of the release is immense, able to kill a normal man at close range and even to send Luffy back reeling. The recoil of an Impact Dial is also intense; Usopp has set it off twice in a row before, but the second use dislocated his shoulder. An Impact Dial is usually used as a weapon by attaching it to the palm via a glove or bandages. The force of the Impact is related to the force that's been absorbed before.
