History
Yuffie Kisaragi was born to Godo Kisaragi and an unknown woman one year before the start of the Wutai vs. Shinra war. Given that a lot of the fighting was probably close to home, this is one possible explanation for the number of secret passages and hidden places in and around Wutai, such as the sliding panels in the Kisaragi home. Nothing is mentioned about Yuffie's mother in canon, and it's usually suggested that she was killed during the fighting; considering Yuffie herself is a ninja and a warrior, this is the explanation that I'm going to be using for her absence.
When she was nine years old, she met Soldier Zack Fair at Fort Tamblin; he'd gone as a part of a mission, and Yuffie briefly intercepted him, stating that she was Wutai's strongest warrior. Clearly a rather stupid thing to do, considering not all of Shinra were as friendly as Zack, but her heart is in the right place: she wanted to protect her homeland, and if that meant punching Zack, then she'd do it. She's also seen to go on treasure hunts, running forward and getting to the treasure before Zack can.
Two years later, Yuffie first found out about materia after being dragged into the conflict between Avalanche and the Turks. She hated them both, blaming them for what Wutai was swiftly decaying into. The war was sapping her country of its former glory, and Yuffie loved her country like she loved nothing else. So, upon finding out about materia, she decided that she'd make Wutai strong again... by collecting as much materia as she could. At age eleven, she set out into the world, alone.
Nothing has been said in canon so far about what she did during the next five years, aside from what she was good at- surviving and collecting materia (whether by finding it, or getting it from other people). When the new Avalanche, led by Cloud Strife, encounters her in a forest, she marks them as her next target.
She gets more than she bargained for. After her defeat at their hands, things start to get rather tricky. To Yuffie, it didn't reallymatter if she won or lost; all she wanted was their materia (or their items. Or their money), and she still had the opportunity to get it. In the game, depending upon how the party acted, she would either steal something and run, or she would join the party. For the sake of back-story, this would have to be discussed with the other FFVII players, but for the sake of putting something here I'll say that several times she stole and ran, until finally she joined up with them prior to Avalanche reaching Junon.
After Yuffie joins the group, Avalanche continues to search for Sephiroth. They visit the city of Junon, quickly stowing away on a ship destined for the next continent. It is here that we discover one of Yuffie's greatest weaknesses: motion sickness. Upon arrival at the resort town of Costa Del Sol, the team splits and Yuffie briefly takes up a job as a shop assistant on a stall selling materia. Her reason for this, naturally, is to rob the owner of the stall blind.
And then, the journey continues. They pause in numerous places, with Yuffie showing no sympathy to Barret's backstory in Corel, and soon afterwards they pick up Cait Sith at the Gold Saucer amusement park, and Vincent Valentine in Nibleheim.
After picking up Cid in Rocket Town, Yuffie mentions that Wutai isn't far. This comes rather out of nowhere, considering she's never mentioned it before. In fact, it's rather odd- the party knows more about resident enigma Vincent Valentine than they do about Yuffie Kisaragi, resident loudmouth. The party heads over there, crossing the sea on Cid's "Tiny Bronco". Just their luck that not long after they arrive, Yuffie steals their materia!
It's worth noting that while this may be annoying to the person playing the game, depending on how much they've levelled up the characters they keep in the main party, it could have been much, much worse. Materia was essential to survival, like weapons, especially when outside of the villages and towns that dotted the world map. Yuffie's theft could have been considered tantamount to murder; in game, it can belot more difficult to defeat enemies without materia, even to the point of game-overs.
That's how strongly Yuffie feels about Wutai; she wasn't stealing merely because materia is 'shiny', but because of the depth of feeling she has for her country. She's willing to exile herself, to bleed, to lie, to steal, to betray people who she was rapidly coming to think of as friends, all for Wutai. Once again her heart is in the right place, but her way of going about things isn't exactly socially acceptable.
After leading Avalanche on a merry chase around her home village, the team discover some interesting things: Namely, Godo is the ruler of Wutai, and he denies his daughter's existence... until she barges in and they start arguing. They clearly don't have a good relationship at this point (vast understatement). Yuffie is ashamed that her father does nothing to help Wutai, leaving it as a tourist-trap for the Shinra. ("How dare you?! Da-chao Statue and Leviathan are ashamed!" - Yuffie, to Godo)
A little later, after leaving Avalanche trapped in a steel cage in the basement of her home (not where Godo lives. On the other side of town, in fact), Yuffie is kidnapped by a pervert called Don Corneo, and later rescued by Avalanche. She wriggles around in her bindings and hurls insults at Don Corneo, not seeming to be put off by the massive drop below- indeed, the fact that she's dangling off the side of a mountain didn't seem to bother her much at all.
After reconciling with Avalanche, she goes to the Pagoda of the Five Mighty Gods. Here, she kicks ass and takes names. Kind of literally. For each of the five levels, she must fight and defeat one of Wutai's top warriors in order to progress upwards. And when she reaches the top, she's shocked to find that herfather is the mightiest warrior in Wutai.
So, what does she do?
Kicks his ass, of course.
Determined to make Godo see her point of view, Yuffie sees no problem in fighting him, even after Godo declares that she has to fight as if she intends to kill him. After an intense battle, the two are flopped out on the floor, panting... and then they begin to laugh. Apparently, the ass-kicking helped them settle their differences, and Godo learns to see what Yuffie's true intentions are.
One particularly important event is Aeris' death at the hands of Sephiroth, as she prays for Holy. Yuffie is seen to have a small hysterical break down. Shedoes care about the people in Avalanche. Later, when they return to Junon, Yuffie masquerades as a reporter the efforts to save Barret and Tifa from execution.
At the end of the game, Yuffie and Vincent work together to help the evacuation of Midgar, and to aid relief efforts for the people who had been injured in the Meteor Disaster. This is a huge responsibility, and places her in a position of leadership over the others helping out. Yuffie rises to the challenge.
Two years later, things are once again going down the proverbial plug-hole for the planet. This time, it's Geostigma and the Remnants.
During the two year gap between FFVII and AC, it is stated in the novels that Yuffie was spending her time teaching martial arts to the children of Wutai, as well as taking time-outs to visit Cid and Nanaki. However, after children begin going missing in Wutai (and across the rest of the world) Yuffie conducts her own investigation, calling Cloud for information. Later, she hitches a ride on Cid's airship, the Sierra (also known as the 'Shera'), to go help Cloud defeat the colossal 'Bahamut SIN' that Kadaj summoned in Edge. Yuffie left a box of materia with Cloud for safekeeping, and is very much irritated to find out that the 'bad guys' had been messing with it.
A year after this marks the start of the Dirge of Cerberus game.
(One thing I would like to mention before I detail Yuffie's role in Dirge of Cerberus is that she, primarily, was used as a comic relief character. Therefore, there are some things that I don't quite agree with.)
The events of DoC are set approximately one year after the events of Advent Children. We find out during the course of the year that Yuffie has been working as intelligence operative for the World Regenesis Organization, founded by Reeve Tuesti. According to the Ultimania Guide, she's been spending her time carrying out investigations around the world.
One such investigation leads to her saving Vincent Valentine's life in the Shinra Manor at Nibleheim. Vincent is about to be killed by Rosso the Crimson, a Tsviet, when a mysterious figure darts into the room. The figure throws a shuriken, dodging an attack from Rosso, and runs forward while the shuriken defies the laws of physics by whirling around and doing some rather significant damage to a pair of double doors. When the shuriken finally comes to a halt, buried deep in the floor, it flares brightly-- likely a flash bomb of some kind. When the light clears, both the figure and Vincent are gone (and Rosso throws a hissy-fit).
The mysterious figure turns out to be Yuffie Kisaragi. When Vincent wakes up, the figure is sat nearby. When he asks who the person is, Yuffie launches into a rather impressive intoductory sequence, proclaiming herself to be Wutai's 'Lone Flower' (Wutai no Ichirin no Hana).
Yuffie seems to be glad to see that Vincent is okay, and they converse for a while... with her doing most of the talking. Even though he was one of the more enigmatic members of Avalanche, Yuffie is evidently determined to include him, as well.
We next see Yuffie sitting in a room with what looks to be a water tank, containing the body of WRO operative Shalua Riu. There is a small amount of confrontation, when Yuffie takes offense to Shelke (Shalua's younger sister) calling Shalua a fool, and Yuffie storms off soon afterwards.
After that is the introduction of Cid Highwind and his airship, which Yuffie seems to be in awe of... even though, when on the airship, she quickly falls victim to motion sickness. Plans are concocted by the WRO operatives to retake Midgar, which had fallen to the Deepground soldiers.
The Deepground soldiers and the Tsviets planned to use Midgar's mako reactors to summon the Weapon known as 'Omega', which is the 'ultimate lifeform', whose purpose, upon the imminent death of the planet, was to gather all life on the planet and take it on a journey into the cosmos. To prevent this from happening, the WRO decided to assault Midgar directly and shut down all the reactors-- a job they drafted Avalanche in for. Vincent was to be the one to deal with the Tsviets.
Yuffie joins the advanced squad attacking from the air, and seems perfectly comfortable in the pre-battle scenario, and at ease with the soldiers she was accompanying. When the advanced squad leave the airship via what appear to be hoverboards, Yuffie lets out a cheer.
The next we see Yuffie, she appears in time to break up a brewing fight between the Tsviet Nero and Vincent (Shelke is also present). She draws attention to herself by making a similar kind of introduction as she made when Vincent woke up in the truck earlier in the game.
She accompanies Vincent and Shelke into the central complex of Midgar, Mako Reactor Zero, whereupon she splits with them. Her objective is to shut down the reactor itself while Vincent's is to deal with the Tsviets. Shelke settles down in a Mako tank/bath.
Yuffie meets up with Vincent again sometime later, still in the complex. We don't get to see what she'd been up to, but she managed to somewhat shut the reactor down, though apparently not entirely. She accompanies Vincent further into the complex, where they suspect they'll find the root of the problem.
Well, after a bit of chat with Nero they find the root of the problem: the leader of the Tsviets, Weiss, who activates the reactor again. As Yuffie and Vincent go to attack, Nero jumps in to defend his brother.
Point at which she arrived at Landel's: Nero attacks people by engulfing them in 'his darkness'. His attack swallows Yuffie, and she becomes trapped. It isn't long before the impenetrable darkness begins to get to her. She brings her hands to her head, crying out... and just as a light begins to shine, she wakes up in Landel's.
Personality
When in the company of others (especially the people she likes), she's seen to be cheerful and playful, such as when she talks to Vincent after rescuing him. She calls him 'Vince', and rarely stays still during the conversation; her casual attitude is shown by the way she moves around, twirling and gesturing as she talks. She loves having fun and playing pranks.
However, Yuffie can also find it difficult to connect with others on a more personal level. She's been known to be cruel at times, displaying little to no sympathy for Barret when she heard about what happened to his hometown. This eased up a little over the years, though, and she's able to show more sympathy to people during the events of Dirge Of Cerberus. Having become an Intelligence officer (possibly a high ranking one) for the WRO, she learned to take at least some responsibility for her words and actions, though that isn't to say she always exercises this self control.
She's flexible, being able to fit in with and work well with a variety of people. Avalanche is the main example of this; though it's likely that she didn't get along so well with some of the members, she still tolerated them and came to value them as friends. Having been shown to work specifically with Vincent on numerous occasions, it's clear that she has the ability to interact with people vastly different from herself. Which isn't to say that she'd let the differences go by without comment, as she enjoys teasing people.
However, this flexibility is not without limits. She's not the kind of person to be forced into working for somebody - her pride won't allow it without a fight. She'll have her own goal in mind: She'll either want to use them, or she trusts them and/or generally supports the cause. She's contemptuous towards people who try to control her without showing her the respect she thinks should be afforded to her, though whether or not the contempt is open depends on the situation.
Yuffie has no trouble whatsoever voicing her opinion. Loudly. If she doesn't like or agree with something, she's more than capable (and willing) to let her displeasure be known. Sometimes, this has lead to her putting her foot in her mouth (figuratively, of course). She can also be impatient, easily getting bored of objects, locations, and sometimes even people.
She has the courage to stand up and fight even though when there's a large chance of failure, such as during the final battle against Sephiroth. She isn’t afraid of being a minority and doesn’t cover up what she believes in with pretty words; she tells it how she sees it. And… uh, when it comes to being faced with something like Don Corneo, rather than acting scared or crying, she instead chooses to hurl insults and vocalises her displeasure.
She's incredible proud, both of her hometown, Wutai, and of herself. Her pride and confidence lead her to leave home at a young age to steal materia, and, later, to battle against her father to get a point across - she was angry that Wutai had turned into a tourist trap, and was determined to make Godo see her point of view. Even when Godo told her to 'come at him as if to kill, or he will kill her', she is not put off. This can lead to her being self-centered, though her intentions are good. Later, while the pride has not abated, Yuffie is seen to be less self-centered: she was fighting alongside the WRO because she knew she could, and because she wanted to help and make a difference.
Before the team reaches Wutai, they know even less about Yuffie than they know about resident ‘…’-guy, Vincent Valentine. For all that she acts like a loudmouthed, cheerful brat, Yuffie is very capable of keeping her real thoughts and opinions close to herself, revealing only necessary bits of information. She’s a very good actor, both in that sense and in the sense that she can pick up roles quite easily. Nobody suspects a ninja to be loud and hyperactive, right?
Yuffie has no problem stealing in the beginning. She technically steals for a reason, though I imagine that some of it is for the thrill. I believe that as AC/DoC came around, she limits her stealing to people who she doesn’t care about, or things that won’t be missed by the people she does care about.
She isn’t stupid. While she isn’t really book-smart at all, she has ingenuity by the bucket load and has the cunning to pull off her tricks. She’s able to use people, and to be able to use people, you have to have the intuition to know them.
She isn’t a defenceless kid. She may be the youngest on the Avalanche roster, but she’s physically and mentally capable of taking care of herself. Battle and death doesn’t seem to phase her at all, unless somebody she cares for dies. In the battle to reclaim Midgar, she’s on the front lines of the battalions attacking from the air, and seems perfectly confident, even happy. She doesn’t mind killing things. Or people. Even though if covered with gore, she might be inclined to yell ‘grossness!’
She is also incredibly loyal. She loves her hometown to itty-bitty bits, and she cares deeply for her friends, as well; she cared enough about Aeris to burst into tears when she died, and that was before she'd known Avalanche for years. While it’s arguable that it was merely traumatic because Yuffie was a young teen, she’s seen enough violence in her life that a little more wouldn’t phase her, especially if it wasn’t somebody she cared about. Furthermore, before going to the Northern Crater, Cloud tells the team to go their separate ways and decide whether or not they really want to go fight. When everybody else is gathered, Barret says that she isn’t going to turn up… and then Yuffie jumps down from the ceiling, indignant.
Yuffie seems to enjoy helping people, and likes praise... but at the same time is embarrassed by the idea of people knowing she likes helping out. This is seen clearly when she teases Vincent after saving him from Rosso, telling him that he should be more grateful that she came and saved him. When he does thank her, she becomes flustered.
Even though Yuffie is a very good actor, and good at masking her intentions and how she feels deep down, she can’t do it all the time. Even as she grows older she still has a tendency to act or speak before she thinks, though as has the maturity to apologise when she didn‘t actually mean it-- like when she snaps at Vincent, blaming him for Shalua getting hurt. Her more superficial emotions are very, very apparent.
Canon Abilities
She can pick up roles rather quickly; during FFVII, she's seen to take up shop-keeping, and later on she disguises herself as a news anchor in an effort to rescue her teammates. Based on this and the way she completely hid her intentions and some of her identity (she never mentioned that she was technically the heir to Wutai, nor did she mention Wutai at all) all the way from joining Avalanche to arriving at Wutai, I follow the idea that Yuffie is quite skilled with acting. And she's a thief-- agood one. When she first met the group? She stole from them, multiple times (unless the player said the right sequence of things to her) The shop thing? Was to steal materia. And so on. To summarise: Yuffie is a damned good at lying.
It isn't stated exactly how she does it, but it's evident that she can steal things right off of people (even trained fighters who should, really, be very aware of their surroundings) without them noticing until she's gone.
While we only really see her fighting with a shuriken, other throwing-based weapons or materia, it's stated that she spent time teaching martial arts to children in Wutai. She knows how to fight hand to hand.
Special Abilities:
Yuffie has more-than-human physical abilities. For starters, she can move faster than any average human can hope to- sometimes even faster than the eye can follow (evidenced when she rescues Vincent Valentine from being killed by Rosso the Crimson in DoC). According to in-game statistics, she's one of the fastest characters in the original FFVII game: even when he's at a slightly higher level, she's considerably faster than Cloud.
She possesses a considerable throwing arm: her shuriken has been seen to throw a wooden door clean off its hinges, shatter it to splinters with ease, come back round and do the same to the other door, and proceed to bury itself several inches into a concrete floor. And that's all with a single throw, which didn't seem to cause her much, if any, effort whatsoever. Similarly, her shurikens can travel a fair amount of distance with one throw.
Furthermore, Yuffie has considerable skills as a gymnast... if running up vertical walls counts as gymnastics. She's been seen to jump down incredibly high distances and land relatively softly, and jump up in the same way (As seen in Advent Children during the fight against Bahamut SIN). Her reflexes and flexibility allows her to do elaborate twists and flips through the air when fighting, and even just to move from place to place.
... It's always worth mentioning that after falling face first off a building and having bounced off several protruding parts of it, Yuffie appears relatively uninjured. Indeed, all she does is whine a bit. So, I'll add 'endurance' to the list of her abilities, though statistically she has rather weak magical and phsyical defense.
Magic: Yuffie, like everybody on her world that we know of, has the ability to use materia. Her magical strength is fairly low in comparison to her teammates, though it's significantly higher than an average civillian's would be.
Limit Breaks:
Level 1:1- Greased Lightning
Yuffie dashes forward and slashes hard with her weapon, appearing to cause no damage. Leaving no time for her opponent to retaliate, she leaps back and strikes again (this time by throwing the weapon). Causes a medium amount of damage.
Level 1:2- Clear Tranquil
Yuffie bows her head and concentrates, focusing her energy. Blue bubbles of something between water and air builds, one each surrounding herself and her allies. When the bubbles pop, half of the target's HP is restored.
Level 2:1- Landscaper
Yuffie punches the ground hard, causing it to ripple and shake. After a moment, the ground beneath the target(s) explodes, causing Earth damage to all ground-based opponents.
Level 2:2- Bloodfest
Yuffie sees red, and launches an almost beserker-like attack against all opponents; her quick slashes and flips leaves them no time to retaliate, and though she strikes 10 times almost consequitively, the attacks only cause light damage.
Level 3:1- Gauntlet
Yuffie flings her weapon, then causes a large, vertical column of blue energy that damages all opponents.
Level 3:2- Doom of the Living
Similar to Bloodfest. Yuffie's world darkens, and this time, each blow she strikes causes a brief flash of purple light. All 15 hits cause more damage than Bloodfest.
Level 4- All Creation
Yuffie raises her weapon to eye-level, focusing her spirit. Concentrating on this, a collosal mass of glowing, violet energy gathers in front of her. When the energy is sufficient, she releases it as a beam of light, which engulfs all enemies and causes heavy damage.
Abilities in Landel's:
Yuffie will retain her martial arts skills, her throwing ability and her athletics, though they will be weakened to the standard of an Olympic Medalist (a significant loss to her, considering the FFVII are crazy-strong in comparison to 'real world' humans). She definitely won't be able to kill anything with a pass or two of a paper crane.
Though she will have to be incredibly stressed or get beaten up a bit, she'll also have access to her Level 1:1 and Level 1:2 Limit Breaks, Greased Lightning and Clear Tranquil.
Clear Tranquil: Up to three 'allies'. Will restore approximately 25% in HP terms. Because not all characters have a system similar to HP, the extent of the healing will be worked out at the time.
Clear Tranquil, especially, will leave her tired and probably needing a nap.
